Why can't some people stomach breakfast?

4hearts · 09/07/2019 08:38

Since being little my parents had to feed
me biscuits before school as I have never ever fancied eating breakfast I just can't eat as soon as I get up for a couple of hours.

DH however has to eat a bowl of cereal as soon as he gets up be it 3am or 11am! DS is the same.

Is there some physiological difference? I want to understand why some people are breakfast people and others aren't.

Could it be related to slow metabolism meaning you are still full from yesterday?

I too can easily go a whole day without eating till evening time.

Quite often I would go till the afternoon without drinking anything either.

Just don't feel a need to to eat or drink. I am as Hmm at people who say they feel physically faint if they don't eat as I am sure they are by me.

However have now started forcing down a yoghurt and drinking a cup of tea as a weight loss aide. It doesn't seem to be making any difference though...

Blush i'm not really able to eat until I have been for a poo which is normally an hourish after I get up and move around have a drink. I'm not particularly hungry though for another hour - I just really cant eat before then.

poorbuthappy · 09/07/2019 10:11

If I eat breakfast it makes me more hungry and I consume more calories than if I don't.
The only time I eat breakfast is if I'm hungover or possibly on holiday.

I stopped having breakfast when I was 12-13.
I'm just not hungry and I remember if I had cereal I would get a sudden stomach cramp/pain. I stopped soon after that.

I also find if I have breakfast, by 11am I'm absolutely starving.

But if I don't have breakfast then I can last easily until 1pm before the hunger pangs start.
I don't know what that's about, I can only assume it's something to do with stomach stretching with breakfast.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 09/07/2019 10:18

I'm another one who just cannot eat anything for a couple of hours after I've got up. That also includes drinking anything other than water - if I do, it makes me very queasy. I've always linked this to my gag reflex which seems to be very strong first thing in the morning. Sometimes brushing my teeth takes a rather long time as I have to do it in small goes. But I think this makes me distinctly odd.

lazylinguist · 09/07/2019 10:20

Grin at being able to eat biscuits, but not being able to stomach anything else for breakfast! FIL used to want to give my dc chocolate digestives when they woke up 'to get their appetite going', because that's what his mother did for him. My dc have never had a problem with their appetite in the morning (and FIL apparently got very fat as a child, though he's a slim and healthy adult).

I didn't like eating breakfast as a teenager for a while, but otherwise I've always eaten it, until recently when I started skipping it as part of 8:16 intermittent fasting. It took me a few days to get used to not eating breakfast, then after that I no longer fancied it. So I guess it's mostly habit which makes you a breakfast fan or not.

ExpeditionEverest · 09/07/2019 10:22

I can't face breakfast either, I've been that way for years. It makes me feel physically sick.

I also really struggle to get up in the mornings.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 09/07/2019 10:23

Never been a breakfast person, I can happily go until after I've collected DC from school before eating although I do drink a lot of coffee in the day. I'm a late night snacked though and my sleeping pattern is horrendous, I'd love to be able to train myself to be a morning person but it's seems impossible

katewhinesalot · 09/07/2019 10:25

It just seems odd to me to force myself to eat in the morning when I'm not hungry and then have to deny myself food later on. I'm definitely not a morning person either.

I can't eat sweet stuff in the mornings. I can happily eat a massive full cooked breakfast though - not because I'm hungry but because I love it. Fortunately that is a rare occurrence.

SouthernComforts · 09/07/2019 10:26

Interesting! I'm not a morning person either and I don't eat breakfast.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 09/07/2019 10:27

I'm very much a morning person who doesn't eat breakfast.

I'm chipper in the morning.
probably all the coffee

SystolicSyster · 09/07/2019 11:33

I most definitely am a morning person, and I need a breakfast, or I'm lightheaded and nauseated before midday (even when low carbing, so can't just be a sugar thing). I start wanting my bed before 9 pm quite often, and very seldom manage to sleep past 7 am - often waking up much earlier - and I'm not usually sleepy in the mornings. Loved my morning porridge with berries as a child, and these days usually have yoghurt with berries and/or seeds.

theorchidwhisperer · 09/07/2019 12:54

My tummy always wakes up around 10am. Even since first school 50 years ago!

I was occasionally forced to eat breakfast before school but it would always be vomited back when I tried to clean my teeth.

I just cannot put food in my stomach before being awake for many hours.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 09/07/2019 13:17

I’m not a breakfast person, but that’s mainly because my exercise classes are in the morning and I’m not keen on eating beforehand.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 09/07/2019 13:23

I wake up hungry and think about food from the minute my eyes open!

Dh however leaves the house for work at 6am and he can’t face anything but coffee until lunchtime.

I’ve 3 dc, 2 absolutely love breakfast the other normally just wants a glass a milk

FrancesFryer · 09/07/2019 13:24

Apparently people who are slow to wake up in the morning tend to have lower cortisol levels upon waking. Whether that has something to do with digestion, I don't know.

This is interesting because I don't produce cortisol and I hate early mornings and certainly can't eat before about 12

Grimbles · 09/07/2019 13:26

I need a breakfast, or I'm lightheaded and nauseated before midday (even when low carbing, so can't just be a sugar thing)

I was going to say that for those who get hungrier after eating breakfast it's generally a blood sugar rise and the drop makes you 'hungry'.

Obviously not everyone is the same though!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/07/2019 13:55

I've never been a morning person and can't stomach food until about 3pm However I don't work due to disability
Even as a child I never ate
The only exception was when I was pregnant x3

Doormat247 · 09/07/2019 13:59

I've never been able to stomach anything in a morning. Just the thought of eating for the first few hours makes me feel sick.

I'm up at 5am every morning and don't drink coffee so maybe it's to do with me still feeling tired and drained in a morning. My mum went through a stage of trying to encourage me to eat breakfast but I didn't have many options with being a fussy eater and lactose intolerant. It was just easier for her to allow me not to eat on a morning.

moleeye · 09/07/2019 14:40

I'm clearly in the minority

I have to eat pretty much as soon as I wake up. Always have done

I'm currently breastfeeding so am ravenous all the time. Trying to eat healthy stuff and not all the sugar in the world which is what I want to do! 🙈

Soola · 09/07/2019 14:46

Whatever time I get up I always have a breakfast of some sort even if it’s just a drink and a biscuit.

I’m not a big eater but so need something in the morning or I feel faint if I were to forego it altogether.

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/07/2019 14:54

I'm the polar opposite of a morning person and I love breakfast!

Coffee or tea first. Followed by food. Takes some of the sting out of getting out of bed Grin Very grumpy if I have to rush it, so if time is tight prefer to delay it a bit, for example catching early train I'd wait to be on the train before eating breakfast - so I guess that means there's a degree of flexibility in my case.

But I can't get my head round people who get up and go about their moderately busy day with zero food until the afternoon - that would make me feel sick and cranky.

DonkeyHohtay · 09/07/2019 14:54

I'm the same. I'm not a breakfast person. Regularly have nothing until about 11am, often go right through to lunch on just coffee.

notso · 09/07/2019 14:58

My BIL and his wife both very slim and sporty were most disheartened when, after waxing lyrical about their amazing new 16:8 diet I told them my plump old self had been doing that 6 days a week for over 20 years.

I'm never hungry in the mornings and hate breakfast food except bacon.

Trooperslaneagain · 09/07/2019 14:59

DD and DH have breakfast together every morning

I need at least 2 hours to get something into me even though my stomach is rumbling. The smells and DH slurping his cereal and crunching the bloody toast loudly are too much for me. I prefer to potter about getting things ready and eat on my own.

Lunch and Dinner are fine, so it must be the morning?
