DS passport has expired - we fly on Wednesday

We have completely screwed up! DH went to check in online this morning for our holiday on Wednesday - discovered that DS passport has expired! Can't believe we've done this. Passport office says they can't fast track a child's application like they can for adults, and there's no guarantee it will arrive on time. I've just been into the Glasgow passport office to be told that I have to make an appointment - but they can't make them, I had to phone another number - then was told you have to make an appointment online - either late tomorrow in Glasgow, or first thing tomorrow in Liverpool.
I'm trying to be practical about this without losing it!

It's a 1 week service for a child renewal. Hopefully they will be able to do it faster than that.

BlueJag · 04/07/2019 10:30

How stressful my husband had his in a day in Liverpool in about 4 hours. Make an appointment today.

Snappedandfarted2019 · 04/07/2019 10:31

Surely you would check all the passports when you're booking? Mine was out of date and I immediately sent for it

dementedpixie · 04/07/2019 10:32

Fasttrack Adults renewals are same day, kids renewals are 1 week. Take the holiday info with you plus the application and hopefully they can speed it up

Canulation · 04/07/2019 10:33

Oh crap. Who did you book with? Can you delay a week?

dementedpixie · 04/07/2019 10:34

I had 3 renewals this year and due to the whole Brexit thing renewed them early in case we need 6 months remaining on them

KatoPotato · 04/07/2019 10:35

I did a kids renewal at Glasgow during the backlog and it was through my door in two days!

"Surely you would check all the passports when you're booking? Mine was out of date and I immediately sent for it"

What on earth is the point in this comment?

OP, with almost a week to spare, I think you can get it done.

feemcgee · 04/07/2019 10:40

KatoPotato that's good to hear! We'll try to put the holiday back by a couple of days, or else I try to get a flight out later with my DS. Can't believe we didn't check this, but no point in beating myself up about what we should have done. The first appointment in a passport office in the UK is tomorrow morning. Glasgow were not helpful at all.

Go for Liverpool because apps after 1.30 are counted as next day. I did a child one two weeks ago in Liverpool , app on Monday morning passport came Thursday.

DownUdderer · 04/07/2019 10:42

Good luck!

MaudeLynne · 04/07/2019 10:43

Where are you flying to? Do you need anything in addition to the passport such as an ESTA for the US?

Knitwit99 · 04/07/2019 10:44

Yep, everyone should always do this. Shame we forgot one time and discovered one of our kids' passports had expired with 9 days till the holiday.

We are in Scotland but the Glasgow passport office didn't have any appointments. So dh had to go to London. We got the passport in the post 2 days later.

From one failed passport checker to another, don't worry, you've got time. If you can get to Liverpool for the early appointment without too much stress I would do that. Gives you almost a whole extra working day.

Nat6999 · 04/07/2019 10:45

I did check & send on the monday, passport arrived Thursday.

strawbmilk · 04/07/2019 10:47

There was a mistake on our baby's passport (they spelt her name wrong). My husband went to the London office to have it corrected and they rang him 40 minutes later to say it was ready. They can do it! Sending positivity your way 🤞🏻

HairyFloppins · 04/07/2019 10:47

Good luck OP.

Toooldtocareanymore · 04/07/2019 10:49

sorry posted too soon, also ask can you pick up form office on Tuesday rather than have them post it

Smurfie12 · 04/07/2019 10:52

I submitted a childs renewal online on the 25th June, same as my renewal. My passport arrived yesterday yipee, childs passport still in the queue to be checked. I hope you get yours quicker than this.

dementedpixie · 04/07/2019 10:53

You need to take the filled in form with you plus countersigned photos (if under 12) plus old passport plus proof of holiday dates

zonkin · 04/07/2019 10:58

I had a similar problem recently. I hadn't realised that the country we were flying to required you to have 6 months left on your passport. DD's didn't and we were flying a week later.

I got an appointment for the seven day renewal service (the fastest that they offer for children) and the passport was through the door 3 days later.

I had started to make contingency plans though!

feemcgee · 04/07/2019 11:08

You guys are all AMAZING! Thank you sooooo much for making me feel better! I will certainly be checking passports religiously from now on. It's so ridiculous, we've been excited about this bloody holiday for months, it's the first time we've gone all inclusive (Ibiza) and I am so looking forward to not planning meals, not cooking, not sweeping sand out of the caravan we usually stay in! Love you all!

Dont they ask for passport numbers for the booking anymore?

aphrodites · 04/07/2019 11:13

We had similar - I only realised a week before our holiday that I had lost my passport, the new one came through in 3 days on the 1 week fast track service.
