DS passport has expired - we fly on Wednesday

We have completely screwed up! DH went to check in online this morning for our holiday on Wednesday - discovered that DS passport has expired! Can't believe we've done this. Passport office says they can't fast track a child's application like they can for adults, and there's no guarantee it will arrive on time. I've just been into the Glasgow passport office to be told that I have to make an appointment - but they can't make them, I had to phone another number - then was told you have to make an appointment online - either late tomorrow in Glasgow, or first thing tomorrow in Liverpool.
I'm trying to be practical about this without losing it!

My friend did this a couple of years ago with a childs passport, they had to get the train from Reading to Liverpool for an appointment, then stay overnight in Liverpool to collect it in perso. , I'm not sure if it was issued next day or if it was 2 nights they had to stay. But they got the passport.

All is not lost!

Surely you would check all the passports when you're booking? Mine was out of date and I immediately sent for it

Well, Gold Star for you I hope it makes you feel good being so smug

Best of luck OP let us know how you get on

My Mum lives overseas, so I always make sure both my passports are up to date because I worry I might need to make an emergency trip there. A couple of years ago I booked a spur of the moment holiday to France and the day before I realised I’d fucked up. My Foreign passport was in date but no good for France and my British one had expired (I still have no idea how I’d let that happen?!) so I had to do the Emergency trip to London to get it renewed and rebook the holiday. Fortunately for me, probably because I owned up to being an idiot! easyJet and the hotels (booked through booking.com all changed my booking at very little or no cost, I was lucky!

Shit happens to everyone 🍀

Just to add, when it happened to us I didn't want to waste any extra time waiting for the new passport to be posted to us so I went back up to Liverpool to collect as soon as they rang me to say it was ready. We are 3.5hrs train journey from Liverpool but need must!

If you do end up booking another fight a couple of days later with your DS and don't use your outbound original flight, make sure your return flight is not cancelled because of not using the outbound one - happened to a friend previously (different circumstances as was medical related but the family had to travel separately and their return original flight was cancelled when two of the party didn't use the outbound).

My destination wasn't EU, hence the six month rule

UPDATE!!!!!
Hello lovely Mumsnetters. DS passport has arrived today - woo hoo! I went down to Liverpool on Friday morning, and it was printed and handed to the courier yesterday! We can all now go together and I don't have to worry that my DH is going to have a heart attack! Grin

My friend went to the passport office as her ds passport was lost, she took the holiday documents showing they weee travelling in about 4 days time and they had it ready the same day, so it can be done.

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/07/2019 15:20

That’s great, they are really friendly and efficient in the Liverpool passport office.

MT2017 · 09/07/2019 19:02

Fantastic news!!

Am in the process of renewing DCs' as they have 5 and a half months left on their passports but we are going to Turkey and I am not risking it...

Really pleased for you op, enjoy the holiday and lovely to read so many encouraging stories Flowers
