PuppyMonkey · 02/07/2019 12:04

Just reading about the highest BBC earners this year and while I think it’s about time some women made the top 20, am I the only one surprised to see Vanessa Feltz in there?Confused

She is AWESOME. Such a fierce intellect, razor sharpe brain and as others have said, an enormous vocabulary. And funny!

For those out of London, you can listen to her show life via the BBC radio app.

Treat yo’self!

I think what OP means and should have phrased her post is:

Why aren't the highest paid at the BBC, those who work full time on prime time BBC1?

If it was, I agree. I think it's odd that people presenting a radio show at 5am and a regional radio show should be in the top 10. Also all those only on the radio. Also those who do one show a week on TV (not prime time).

And actually, I think all their salaries are excessive.

I don’t want to listen to a programme about London, thanks anyway.

Thanks for phrasing it better Randomly.Grin

What about all of the people side stepping this and paid into their offshore production companies

Steve Wright and all of his hangers on and sycophants should just go and some new talent allowed through

LoafofSellotape · 03/07/2019 08:25

At least Vanessa is a qualified journalist, very clever, able to give an informed opinion, I think she got a first at Cambridge, I am happier she gets more/same money than the truly awful Zoe Ball

Totally agree

fatbottomgirl67 · 03/07/2019 08:40

I love Vanessa but find her too much on the early morning show. She's great on Jeremy vines show too. She needs a different time slot . I'm still utterly shocked at how much steve wright earns. I truly loath him and his show and always turn over. Wish they would retire him

Loopytiles · 03/07/2019 08:54

If I was one of the top women BBC journos I would seek to negotiate £149k pay to avoid scrutiny.

CoraPirbright · 03/07/2019 09:26

I absolutely adore Vanessa. She works SO hard - you couldnt get me out of bed at the time she does for all money in the world! Her command of the English language is second to none, she is witty and warm and she will hold her interviewees to account in a firm but nice way. I was slightly sad that she was moved on BBC London from the later morning slot to the breakfast show because I find the constant weather and traffic checks and the bloody sport spoil the flow somewhat. One of the first things I did when I moved out of London was to ensure I could still tune in to her! She deserves every penny and more!

Steve Wright, on the other hand, makes me want to eat my own eyeballs. He is awful and 90% of his show is bloody jingles! And as for that “serious jocking’ thing he does - who the fuck thinks that is ok?

CoraPirbright · 03/07/2019 09:29

But it isnt!! For example, right now, they are talking about the new reports on obesity being linked to many cancers. Then there’s the paper review which is about all the national papers, picked by all sorts of guests - entrepreneurs, barristers, nurses, charity workers, listeners. Sure the traffic is always about the Hammersmith gyratory or whatever but its not totally London-centric.

Agree with this completely. Really miss her old show.

RandomNameChange415 · 03/07/2019 17:37

I assume quite a lot of people have to get up between 5 and 6 for various reasons - commuters, farmers, night shift commutes home, parents of early risers. And older people frequently rise early so I assume Vanessa is shipping in the listeners in that Radio 2 slot.

Also there’s definitely an element of earnings per hour in these salaries. Four and a half hours of live radio every weekday on two different stations is a lot - surely far more hours than anyone else in the top twenty.

Cinammoncake · 03/07/2019 18:06

Nothing against the other two personally, I think they're great presenters, but Vanessa strikes me as the odd one out of the three for not having had a famous TV entertainer parent not saying it's nepotism

MockerstheFeManist · 03/07/2019 18:11

When some are staffers and some are contracted via BBC Studios, it's all as clear as mud.

But what it shows is the absolute stranglehold on the top of the BBC by the Oxbridge Mafia of whatever sex, and that space for the Oxbridge women has been found at the expense of red brick oiks like Eddie Mair and Simon Mayo.

Shouldbedoing · 03/07/2019 18:14

Glad I'm not the only one noticing that Jason Mohammed earns the same. He seems to have been there about 5 minutes, does the Sunday morning with Rev'd Kate, yet mysteriously is already that well remunerated. Is it because he's a man?

EskewedBeef · 03/07/2019 18:55

I don't really know what the deal with Mohammad is. I know he was presenting the second tier snooker (Hazel Irvine always got the evening sessions and big matches, but mysteriously doesn't appear on the list 🤔), and some non-Match of the Day football thing. Plus the weekly religion show on R2 with Rev Kate, and possibly some Welsh sports radio...? Perhaps it's the number of gigs he has that is upping his pay, rather than his talent or status. I don't know, but I don't think he's worth that much to the licence payer is he? Would anyone notice if a different person did his jobs, one who needed paying a standard rate?

maddiemookins16mum · 03/07/2019 19:39

Love Vanessa, articulate, witty, very clever and not just a clothes horse fronting a light entertainment dance show.

Sarcelle · 03/07/2019 20:08

I would be more interested in their hourly rate so you could tell how much they were working.

RandomNameChange415 · 03/07/2019 20:27

Yes. I reckon Vanessa must be on around 300 quid an hour, which is what you’d pay for a mid range London solicitor.

Sarcelle · 03/07/2019 22:10

In comparison to Steve Wright, her hourly rate must be much smaller due to hours worked.

I notice that people like Graham Norton has had a pay cut. However he seems to get more time off now, he records more shows now rather than do them live. So, the output is the same apart from the "liveness" he will be maximising his leave.
