Devon vs Yorkshire.

Which would you choose to live in? I've been pondering and planning a move to one of them but now I'm doubting myself as I love the other almost as much.

Which county do you prefer and why?

OP posts:
VenusClapTrap · 30/06/2019 23:50

Yorkshire. I prefer the scenery.

Progress2019 · 01/07/2019 03:56

I love them both and we are planning a move to Devon however the Yorkshire accent is amazing.

Sashkin · 01/07/2019 04:10

Yorkshire. Better scenery, better transport links, more culture/history. Leeds is a great city, so are York’s and Sheffield. Great beaches, and there is nothing in Devon to compare with the Dales. I lived in the SW for two years, Devon is nice but nothing like as nice as Yorkshire.

twoheaped · 01/07/2019 04:36

Yorkshire every time.
The one road into and out of Devon would put me off, unless it has changed since I wss last there.
It really is the road to hell.

smashamasha · 01/07/2019 05:13

The nice thing about living in Devon is you rarely want to leave so the roads in and out don't really matter!

I've lived in north Devon most of my life.

I always describe it as a place where people have their priorities straight.

No one cares how much anyone earns, what car you have, what clothes you wear. It's about family, friends and being outdoors and in nature.

I imagine Yorkshire is quite similar.

Bluesheep8 · 01/07/2019 06:03

Yorkshire. West.

boxlikeamarchhare · 01/07/2019 06:44

Where are you looking OP? What areas in particular?

I love my part of North Yorkshire. 10 mins from the A1, fast train to London an hour away incl parking and getting coffee.

North Yorkshire coast a 50 minute drive, on edge of Dales. Leeds and York 45 minutes away. Scotland / Northumberland within easy reach.

I have never lived in Devon but I have lived in north Norfolk and the fact that it takes you more than an hour to get to a decent road/get out of the county would drive me to Yorkshire (depending on where).

PETRONELLAS · 01/07/2019 06:49

Yorkshire. Feels much nearer to larger towns which I prefer. Feels less touristy. Yorkshire just feels so much more than Devon. Weather may be an issue. I’d need bright days.

NameChangeNugget · 01/07/2019 06:51

Really didn’t like living in Yorkshire (Harrogate)

Much prefer Devon

holdingonbyathread · 01/07/2019 06:53

Depends where in south Devon you are thinking of. If you are thinking Torquay or Paignton for example...choose Yorkshire! (Disclaimer - I live in south Devon)

BarbaraofSevillle · 01/07/2019 06:57

Friend has lived in both Yorkshire and Devon. Currently lives in Devon but it wasn't really his choice.

Downsides of Devon - it's a long way from major cities and it can be very hard to find decently paid work. He has to work away a lot in his profession. Water is very expensive, as is housing. It's very crowded with tourists in the summer.

But it is a lovely place to live, so it depends if you can overcome the mainly financial hurdles.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/07/2019 07:05

I lived in Devon and found it very unfriendly. Also the water rates are crazy high.

It’s beautiful though. Still love it.

NannaNoodleman · 01/07/2019 07:20

I'm amazed by the amount of people who've lived in both Yorkshire and Devon. Grin

We lived in two places in Yorkshire and two places in Devon.

Devon wins it by miles. DH is a Yorkshireman and fiercely proud of his roots but even he won't move back.

We've found Devon much friendlier and safer. It's more environmentally conscious. It's beautiful.

WalnutCabinet · 01/07/2019 08:07

Really didn’t like living in Yorkshire (Harrogate)

That is because Harrogate may be geographically in North Yorkshire but isn't socially.

longwayoff · 01/07/2019 09:12

I met lots of northerners when I lived in Devon but few - none actually - West Country people in Yorkshire.

JacquesHammer · 01/07/2019 09:13

I think parts of North Yorkshire are amongst the most beautiful places in the world.

I love it here!

Pootles34 · 01/07/2019 09:18

longwayoff wierdly now you come to mention it, neither have I - and I've lived in Yorkshire (counts on fingers) 17 years now. How odd!

Honestly OP I don't think you can go far wrong with either - both lovely places. Maybe just decide it on house prices?

SallyWD · 01/07/2019 10:25

I've lived in both and their are pros and cons for each place.

Devon is beautiful, lots of lovely beaches, pretty villages. Cream teas everywhere! On the downside I got sick and tired of all the tourists. In the summer there was horrendous traffic due to this and the pretty coastal places were far too crowded. We used to have day trips to Cornwall and that was ALWAYS crowded with tourists, e.g. even on a dreary winter's day. I mean Cornwall and Devon are very beautiful but so are other places in the UK yet it felt like the whole country would descend on the west country for their UK holidays. The other downside for me was the weather. People will tell you the weather's better in Devon than Yorkshire, believe me it's not! In Devon the summers were wet while the rest of the UK was sunny. I didn't notice these so called mild winters either.

Yorkshire is beautiful too. That's why it's called God's Own County. I've really not noticed the weather being significantly colder. Like I say it's better than the grey damp climate of Devon. House are cheaper - we've bought a 5 bedroom house and could never have afforded this in Devon. Devon people are friendly but Yorkshire people even more so. Living in Yorkshire you have an abundance of countryside yet so many cities and towns to visit too.

I think you can probably guess that having experienced both I much prefer living in Yorkshire!

Moondancer73 · 01/07/2019 10:33

Devon every time. It's where I live and having holidayed in Yorkshire and found it very unfriendly I wouldn't go back.

IVFNewbie · 01/07/2019 10:45

Devon. Warmer, prettier, friendlier, slower pace. Parts of Yorkshire are lovely though.

Delatron · 01/07/2019 12:27

I do think Devon and Cornwall have their own weird microclimate (very wet and not as warm as SE).

Yorkshire is beautiful and so varied. Some of the most stunning countryside in the world. Mainly West and North though. Transport links probably better and less isolated. Leeds is also a fab city.

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 01/07/2019 12:35

100% Yorkshire. So much more varied with different landscapes: hills, fells, valleys, moors, coast both wild and manicured. Plus each city has such an individual identity, meaning its easy to find "your spot". It's also stunningly beautiful.

Devon is ok, but in summer seems to be a rat run for people getting to Cornwall and isn't as confident in it's own identity as parts of Yorkshire.

longwayoff · 01/07/2019 14:45

@Pootles34, both lovely places but the weather and the winters persuade me to stay down here Smile

MT2017 · 01/07/2019 17:44

Devon.

Better weather than Yorkshire Grin

AppleKatie · 01/07/2019 17:52

Where are you from originally? Which one feels more like ‘home’.
