Which would you choose to live in? I've been pondering and planning a move to one of them but now I'm doubting myself as I love the other almost as much.

Which county do you prefer and why?

I'm from Glasgow originally, and they both feel very different to me. I was favouring Devon but now I'm not sure as I also adore Yorkshire. A friend is trying to get me to consider Sussex.

having holidayed in Yorkshire and found it very unfriendly I wouldn't go back

Wow, I've never heard anyone say that before. I'm in Yorkshire at the moment, and I'd say it's as friendly as it's always been.

But in answer to the question - Devon, without a doubt. The scenery is prettier.

West Yorkshire. No other options are available

Well, I'm in West Yorkshire (very near Huddersfield), and I still vote for Devon. But it's nice to see someone sticking up for my home county. (Can't wait to get out of here and go back down south, though ... )

TBH I struggled in Yorkshire. People would say hello but it took ages to make actual friends. I found Devon far more welcoming.

The woman who owned our local shop in Yorkshire would yell at anyone that dared to venture in within 10 minutes of closing "you better be quick" Grin

I lived 55 yrs In West Yorkshire - I'd give that a miss.
We now live in East Riding of Yorkshire but literally 500 yards from North. Property is cheap but lovely. We paid 300k for a huge 4 bed detached. Great rail links to York and Leeds.

SpoonBlender · 01/07/2019 20:21

I've lived in both - and chose to stay in Yorkshire. It has an economy. Devon's great for holidays, retiring, or running a campsite. Yorkshire you can live in while you're earning a crust.

What? All of it? Confused

Devon!

Chewbecca · 01/07/2019 20:40

I didn’t enjoy living in Yorkshire, I found it wet and cold - had to scrape ice off my car in the morning every day for about 5 months of the year. May not bother you though if Yorkshire is South of what you’re used to. Another thing I never got over what that the chippies had silly opening hours (i.e. not what I would call dinner time - 6-7pm).

I haven’t tried Devon though.

missyB1 · 01/07/2019 20:47

Neither choose Dorset instead!

Kokapetl · 01/07/2019 21:23

I have lived in both York and near Exeter and really like both.

York beats Exeter for history.
Exeter beats York for weather (although I miss snow!)
Both areas have great coastlines, moors, forests etc.
I fine Devon folk at least as friendly as Yorkshire, possibly more, but then I have a southern accent.
North Yorkshire is closer to really big cities but Exeter has most of the high street shops and you can order stuff online these days so maybe shopping is less of an issue.

On the whole, I prefer Devon. I often feel like I am on holiday here (in a good way!) even though I have now lived here several years. Although I really liked Yorkshire, it got a bit grim in the winter when there were cold east winds and weeks of grey skies.

Sashkin · 05/07/2019 05:16

I met lots of northerners when I lived in Devon but few - none actually - West Country people in Yorkshire

Likely they’re all still stuck in traffic on the M5 Grin

AnnaDine · 05/07/2019 06:10

Agree with your friend - Sussex!

Ounce · 05/07/2019 06:20

Devon is only overrun with tourists if you don't know your way around, and you go where the tourists go. It's perfectly possible to spend sunny weekends in beautiful countryside and not see a soul.

ForalltheSaints · 05/07/2019 06:42

I'd choose Devon for the longer daylight in winter over Yorkshire. The only thing that might make a different decision is if I travel abroad a lot, given transport links to airports, ferries or Eurostar.

smashamasha · 05/07/2019 06:46

@Sashkin

The only people the M5 is a problem for us the tourists. If you live here, you accept that a sunny Saturday trip to Bristol in August isn't a good idea.

And anyway - who would want to leave Devon on a sunny weekend anyway?!

It's just SO beautiful here at the moment (north Devon). Sea like a millpond, hot with a cooling breeze. There's nowhere better in the world when the sun shines!

WhoKnewBeefStew · 05/07/2019 07:52

Yorkshire every time

wonkylegs · 05/07/2019 08:28

My family is from Devon, beautiful place but not always the easiest place to live. Access feels like it should be better than it is, my brother goes spare at the number of second homers in their (very pretty) village as it does affect the community. Internet and mobile service where they are is shit.
I live on the border of N.yorkshire (I can see it out the window but technically I'm in another county) - it's beautiful too and surprisingly well connected where we are, good access to towns, cities, London, airports and shops, fab internet, ok mobile service. We have some very very very good restaurants in a very short distance. The community is very settled here and if you come in you will always be thought of as an outsider (there are quite a few of us) but they still are very welcoming.

The other year my brother got more snow in the SW than we did up here but generally it's a degree or so colder here although in the summer that can be good. And as both of us live in villages taxis are a bit shit in both locations although both of us are close to rail lines mine links to the EC mainline very quickly so it's generally a bit more useful.
