If you had to choose a fastening?

Warning! This is hypothetical!

Imagine that humans have upset the God Of Fastenings with our frequent swearing at zips sticking and when the drawstring knot comes undone and the end disappears into the material. She is very angry with us all and tells us that we are now only allowed one type of fastening for EVERYTHING, but we are allowed to choose which one. What would your choice be? (It wouldn't be totally down to you. I assume there would be a referendum.)

Zips? Buttons? Velcro? Poppers? Laces? Hook & Eyes? Toggles? Buckles? Other?

Obviously not laces, buttons, toggles or buckles or zips. Imagine trying to lace up a bra! Or Velcro, constant scratching if it's not lined up straight.
So poppers or hook and eye.
Undecided as yet.

Mysterian · 27/06/2019 19:33

And I would go for buttons. Fairly flexible. Might have issues with shoes. Buttons have the edge over Velcro because hair can build up in the hooky part of Velcro and reduce effectiveness, and looks really gross.

Hook and eye, I think. Secure and not bulkey.

Or good old fashioned buttons.

Kpo58 · 27/06/2019 21:47

Has to be poppers. They are great for everything.

ElizaPancakes · 27/06/2019 21:48

Buttons. I like buttons.

FloorOfDespair · 27/06/2019 21:48

But buttons are not good for people with limited finger mobility!

ElizaPancakes · 27/06/2019 21:49

Yes but in this hypothetical world there is no one with limited finger mobility! Wink

SirVixofVixHall · 27/06/2019 21:49

Hooks and eyes. Definitely.

blamethecat · 27/06/2019 21:49

Poppers.

blamethecat · 27/06/2019 21:50

DP says hook and eye.

Bostyrone · 27/06/2019 21:50

Heavy duty Velcro.

SirVixofVixHall · 27/06/2019 21:51

But poppers wouldn’t hold a bra closed, or a blouse. Poppers are too feeble. Buttons are excellent, and up there with hooks, but buttons wouldn’t work on a bra, whereas hooks do work on coats.

TheRLodger · 27/06/2019 21:52

Poppers or Velcro

Chewbecca · 27/06/2019 21:53

Oooh, what a.good question!

I think I vote velcro because it is adjustable. Zips, poppers, buttons will be fixed in one position, you can be sure this is not the right position.

However, there is the 'other stuff sticking' possibility so I think buckles are my 2nd choice.

FloorOfDespair · 27/06/2019 21:54

Velcro on a coat is the work of the devil. If you walk around with your coat open it catchers on and tears your jumpers and shirts. Plus imagine the mess when you take everything out of the washing machine Shock
I'm edging to hook and eye as it seems more practical for shoes than poppers do.

WhereForArtThouBray · 27/06/2019 21:55

I quite like zips. You could have bras that fasten at the front with a zip rather than an awkward hook and eye at the back.

Skippii · 27/06/2019 21:56

I couldn’t cope without laces in shoes, so laces

Karwomannghia · 27/06/2019 21:59

Zips definitely! Would have loved zipped babygros as opposed to popper tangles! Hidden zips in tops etc would be fine, wouldn’t want any gaping holes between buttons or untimely popper openings!

DoraleeRhodes · 27/06/2019 21:59

Zips for me!

Shockers · 27/06/2019 22:02

Oooh- hook and eye!

Big ones for coats; small ones for bras.

pictish · 27/06/2019 22:05

Buttons...the most reliable fastening.

SirVixofVixHall · 27/06/2019 22:23

Victorian clothes are a mixture of hooks and eyes, and buttons.

Mysterian · 27/06/2019 22:25

Hook and eyes winning so far...

I was extremely concerned for the security of my enormous busom so I was all set to say hook and eye purely for bra reasons, but I do like @WhereForArtThouBray’s front zipped bra idea. Why the fuck do bras fasten round the back in the first place? I’m not a contortionist nor particularly nimble/fingered. Bras are ridiculous.

So I’m going for zips.

catinboots99 · 27/06/2019 22:47

I really like this thread.

My vote goes for zips.

@WhereForArtThouBray's front zip bras swayed it for me.
