Do you have a tall DH and two car seats?

What car do you have?!

I didn't think ours was particularly tiny (Hyundai i20) - but after having DD we had to put her car seat on the passenger side of the back seat as tall DH needs driver's seat fully back and car seat wouldn't fit behind it!

DC2 now imminent and it's dawning on me that, short of chucking them in the boot, we'll probably need something larger -

I don't like big cars as a rule, so want something 'small big' Hmm but would prefer to keep the DCs rear-facing for as long as poss which I'm assuming means even more space needed?

I know nothing about cars, and tbh the thought of spending hours researching, or even worse visiting showrooms, bores me to tears- so I thought I'd cheat by asking on here! Grin

Do you have something that works brilliantly for you??

I'm the tall one as the mom and over 6ft. I struggle in dp seat as baby can't go behind me. MY zafira is fine but that a huge car!
Best advice is to shove the seat back when buying and check the gap.
My mom's skoda 4x4 thing is appalling for space as is my sisters clio and golf.

We've got a Grand Scenic (a few years old). I know MPVs are very out of fashion but they're awesome because there is plenty of room inside without a significantly bigger footprint than an estate/saloon.

IWouldBeSuperb · 26/06/2019 06:05

Good point Spangly - I'm stupidly short so forget that others can e.g. reach pedals with ease Grin

Going out and measuring gaps is a perfectly sensible idea - but would also mean dealing with car salespeople!

One of them once tried to sell me a 'special weather-proofing finish' - silly me for thinking cars were literally designed for going outside Confused

I love my Ford C Max,

SciFiRules · 26/06/2019 06:11

Another vote for the Zaferia. They don't feel big to drive, being square parking is easy and they turn on a sixpence. Inside is cavernous and the boot is huge with the two rear seats folded down.

Hoolahoophop · 26/06/2019 06:13

We manage with our Golf and a 6'3 parent in the front.

Then again we also managed with a mini convertible and same 6'3 when it was sunny.

How old is DC1? Britax Two way elite is fairly forgiving for a "tall" RF seat but is belt installed which is a massive ball ache to transfer if doing it semi regularly.

We're tight in a Legacy with 2 RF FWIW- we have the 2WE behind the passenger because it doesn't have to move and can just squeeze the baby seat behind DH in the driving seat.

kittlesticks · 26/06/2019 06:17

Both tall here and manage ok in a fiesta. Fab car. I recommend.

IWouldBeSuperb · 26/06/2019 06:20

Hmm... hadn't looked at any 7 seaters as they always seem terrifyingly huge (and planning on stopping at 2DC!) But will investigate...

Will also google Scenic and C Max!

Those managing with smaller cars - are your tall drivers particularly bendy yogis?!

DH's knees were around his ears when we put the seat forward! Grin

Look at the skoda superb. It has an insane amount of leg room and you wouldn't even notice the car seats in the back!

OhWifey · 26/06/2019 06:44

Skoda Superb is regarded to have incredible cabin space for RF car seats. Try joining Car Seat Advice UK on Facebook as they have a file with car recommendations and you can also search the group for precious discussions

TwittleBee · 26/06/2019 06:45

DH is 6'4" and we have 2 car seats in our Ford C-max. Before we had a Micra haha!

Landlubber2019 · 26/06/2019 06:49

Interesting thread, 1 tall dh who needs lots of leg room and 2 car seats in the back. We love our cmax, it doesn't feel big and the heated windscreen is amazing 😁

WombatStewForTea · 26/06/2019 06:56

Dh has got a Nissan pulsar. Doesn't feel big to drive but has got so much space

NC2605 · 26/06/2019 07:03

We have this exact issue and have been out trying car seats in cars. Nissan Qasqui, Ford Kuga, Kia Sportage, Renault Kadjar and Mazda CX5, Ford C Max (and B Max though was tight!), Skoda Octavia and Karoq and Kodiaq, so far all fit my 6ft 2 husband and 2 extended rear facing seats. Ones we have found so far that didn't work were Vauxhall Mokka and Nissan Juke. Hope this is helpful!

SciFiRules · 26/06/2019 07:04

The Zaferia has lots of cabin space and headroom, 50 ish mpg (I've an old one). I really like mine.

HelloJuly · 26/06/2019 07:04

Mercedes B class is spacious on the inside. Similar to the Ford C Max but imo feels more spacious. We were comparing the two.

RedSheep73 · 26/06/2019 07:06

Take your car seats and go round a few showrooms, even if you're not planning to buy new, it'll give you a good idea of the space.

HelloJuly · 26/06/2019 07:06

Oh and we had a Fiesta before having dc2. Definitely worth changing to a bigger car if you can!

Fluffyunicorn98 · 26/06/2019 07:09

We're currently in the same boat, DP is 6.4 got his little girl, and one on the way.. i have a miniConfused!

Waggily · 26/06/2019 07:27

We had the same problem. We ended up with a VW Passat estate. Which is huge but at least everyone fits.

CMOTDibbler · 26/06/2019 07:37

No child seats now, but a 6'3 DH, 5'9 me and 5'9 (and predicted to be 6'5) ds. We have a Skoda Superb which is fantastic for leg room in the back - theres more than when we had a Discovery and friends over 6' can sit comfortably behind dh.

Its also a brilliant car which is very easy to drive

paap1975 · 26/06/2019 07:43

Our mitsubishi ASX is great. Spacious inside but not actually a huge car, so easy when it comes to parking etc.

ArDali1 · 26/06/2019 11:51

On the same boat of looking for a new car that is bigger than our bloody micra.
We have looked at hyundai kona, kia Niro, Jeep renegade (my favourite), mitsubishi Asx, nissan qashqai, these are supposed to be compact SUVs, so smaller than the usual but still spacious inside.
Other cars I am considering are honda jazz and civic.
