Is there any way of downloading videos etc on iPads without internet?

We will be going on holiday soon and one of my dc is autistic. He watches videos on YouTube mainly. Most of the games he plays also all need the internet apart from basic minecraft. Is there any way to download a load of videos off you tube before we leave the house so we can watch those? Or not even on YouTube, anything else? Tv programmes etc?

He won’t sit and listen to music, not an option. We have portable DVD player but it’s bulky.

Any one know? He seems to think he can download but you need to pay for premium on YouTube?

Offline you will have access to your previously downloaded videos in a section on the app.

The above tutorial for iPad.

pasta so you can still ‘log in’ without needing the internet? Presumably a password.

Thanks bad I will have a look.

bad he doesn’t have an iPad ‘air’ does that matter? (Reading the link you kindly gave me)

You'd need to be logged into the app prior to airport mode (and to download the videos) , then you just stay logged in with access to the downloads section. But obviously in airport mode that's all you can access.

Badbilly · 23/06/2019 16:42

I’ve just checked and was shocked to learn that YouTube premium is £11.99 a month !

4K Download licence fee is £15.95 (one-off payment), but I believe there is a discount at present, and it is £7.95 ( not 100% sure if the discount is still available).

Inbedbynine · 23/06/2019 16:45

pasta yes so at home I log on, download. We leave the house, put his iPad on aeroplane mode... get on plane and he can still ‘Log on’ to you tube to access just the downloaded videos?

bad yes I saw that but to be honest I would pay if it meant he was less anxious and settled as means I will be too! Did you see my comment on that he doesn’t have an iPad ‘air’?

No, the platform is the same for iPad or iPad Air - that was written a few years ago when iPad airs were the trendy thing - so just added for marketing

Pastacravings · 23/06/2019 16:48

So you'd log on, download the videos, switch onto Airport mode and you would still be logged in with access to the downloads section of YouTube which looks like this in airport mode

Just to add- you can download the free version first to try it- the only restriction on the free one is you’re only allowed a limited number of downloads per day, and do get adverts. On the paid for version it is unlimited, and advert free.

Inbedbynine · 23/06/2019 16:50

Thanks bad.

Thanks also pasta will it matter if his iPad turns off/runs out of battery etc, would he still stay logged on? I thought you ran out of your ‘session’ like if your shopping online and go away for couple hours and go back to it and you’re logged off?

Inbedbynine · 23/06/2019 16:52

Good to know re adverts, he hates them. I guess advantage of this is for future holidays we would be sorted if it’s one off fee. So I would download it.... but would I have to download and set it up on his iPad? Or can I set it up on my phone, sort out password/account etc and he just ‘logs on’ from his iPad and then his sibling can also use it?

Yes you'd still be logged into the YouTube app when you turned it back on

Badbilly · 23/06/2019 18:43

I think you are misunderstanding 4K download. There is no log on, or account needed. It is just a tool for downloading YouTube videos. You would have to download them onto the iPad, or a usb stick, and it converts the videos to “normal” .mp4, so any video player app will recognise them and play them back. The videos are stored on your device ( or usb stick) so when you don’t have a connection to the internet you can play them back.

You would have to download the videos first, before you go on holiday. Once it has downloaded them it has do further interaction with YouTube.

Inbedbynine · 23/06/2019 20:34

Ok. So there is no USB port on the iPad so presumably there would need to be enough storage on the actual iPad?

OP posts:
BouleBaker · 24/06/2019 05:56

There is going to need to be enough storage on the iPad whichever method you choose.

Inbedbynine · 24/06/2019 09:19

Bollocks. That won’t work then as I don’t think there’s a great deal of storage. I guess I could download to mine aswell...

He only has 1gb left so won’t go far Grin

How old is your iPad? Older ones have a Lightening connector, newer ones have usb c, and you need to get the appropriate adapter cable.
That’s the trouble with apple, it’s never straightforward, and they always make you jump through hoops. They seem to be biased towards aesthetics rather than functionality, and charge you extra for the privilege.

Inbedbynine · 24/06/2019 14:23

Quite a few years ... none of them have a usb point.

OK, then it must be time to go for the nuclear option-depending on your budget, of course. Buy a Wireless HDD. They are not cheap. A 1TB wireless HDD will cost you about £120.

It will still be lots of faffing about to download the films from youtube, but, depending on picture quality and compression, you will be able to store absolutely loads on a 1TB drive.

It acts like an external Hard Drive, but you connect to it wirelessly via the wi-fi connection on your ipad, so no need for USB connections and adaptors.

To be honest, if that is one of the main reasons you want a tablet, then when it comes time to renew, DON'T buy Apple. You'd be better off buying 2 Android or Windows tablets, with USB sockets, and it would be absolute simplicity itself to do what you want to do. It only becomes a faff because you bought an apple product.

A Lenovo android tablet will set you back about £120, and comes complete with a USB lead! It has a storage capacity of 16GB internally, but this can obviously be increased by use of USB sticks , or SD cards, at relatively low cost. It won't be the same quality as an ipad, obviously, but would save you lots of headaches.

Wish I had known all this when we first got I to Apple! Iv stuck with apple as I have an iPhone, dc has one of my old iPhones, all have iPads so I can keep them all on one account and keep an eye on them and the restrictions!

A HDD is that something you plug into the iPad? Sounds like a little box thing I had to buy for the already ‘gaming’ laptop I forked out for as there wasn’t enough space to download the decent games!

To be fair we only go abroad once a year, for a few days at the most. Day to day we are fine as I share my data with his phone and he plugs into that in the car etc, so it’s just whilst we are away.

OP posts:
Badbilly · 25/06/2019 20:44

Sorry, I went into a bit of an anti- apple rant, as it really annoys me that apple make it so hard to connect to anything that isn’t apple related.
Why not take the gaming laptop with you? If you already have a HDD ( hard disk drive) to plug into it you can download loads of YouTube videos on to that.

KatewithaH · 25/06/2019 20:48

May be worth looking to see if there are any unused apps on the current ipad you can delete for extra storage.

Inbedbynine · 25/06/2019 20:50

It’s very expensive and I don’t want it in hand luggage! Or the hold! If I took it I would never get him to leave the hotel. Plus having problems with it, I have a seacraft (something like that) expansion pack but it’s stopped working! Plenty of space on it but it’s like the laptop doesn’t register it when plugged in and I don’t know why/
