I dreamt I was on the toilet and wet the bed

So angry and upset with myself.

I assume I was in a deep sleep, didn't have a massive amount of fluids last night and no alcohol.

We've just spent near on a grand on decorating including new bedroom furniture, carpet and mattress.

I have no idea how bad mattress is because dp asleep. Even the carpet is wet from where I dashed to the toilet.

Has anyone else done this? Confused

I've done it a couple of times as a teen or adult. It's embarrassing but it's usually just the product of deep sleeping, weird dreams or drinking too much. I've got no advice about the mattress I'm afraid but just wanted to say it's not in any way abnormal.

KookyBeret · 23/06/2019 03:54

(And not to be angry or upset with yourself).

dalmatianmad · 23/06/2019 03:58

Thankyou Kooky, it was warm yesterday so I made more of an effort to drink more water.
I'm going in daughters bed, she's at her boyfriends tonight. I'll sort it all tomorrow, Dp is snoring and oblivious!

I've done that exact thing before!! I was freaked out but laughed in the end. Don't worry about carpet and mattress, they can be cleaned. Xx

Bluerussian · 23/06/2019 04:13

Oh bless you, I did it when I was 24. Never forgotten the panic and embarrassment when I woke up! You'll get over it, op, even laugh about it one day.

PS: If you're worried, put a really big puppy training pad - or 2 - under the sheet on your side. You can buy huge ones, 90x90cms.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 23/06/2019 04:18

I’ve done this, too! I had cystitis at the time.

I remember finally finding a decent toilet in my dream after a frantic search (they’re always terrible in dreams, aren’t they?) , and just letting it flood out with relief. I woke up to find it actually happening!

Don’t worry, OP, it won’t be a common occurrence.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/06/2019 04:25

I did this when I was 16, and I know many people who have as well. There is nothing to be embarrassed or angry about. A dream made you pee. That's it.

Nancydrawn · 23/06/2019 04:45

Buy a good mattress protector. Not because you'll wet the bed again, but because you might spill a cup of tea, or just want to keep the mattress smelling clean. It saved me when the dog knocked a giant glass of iced tea out my hand.

I use this one, though it's American. helixsleep.com/products/mattress-protector

Dowser · 23/06/2019 06:07

I always use mattress protectors. Every bed in my house has one. I can’t think why anyone wouldn’t.. they are good quality ones. Last ages
You can always put two sheets on if you’re worried about being hot and sweaty but you know you’re not sleeping on a stained mattress.

TheSerenDipitY · 23/06/2019 06:40

tomorrow strip it and get a steam cleaner and give it a good going over, might have to sponge the area a bit with some white vinegar if there is any smell, and let it dry out, will be good as new

Impatienceismyvirtue · 23/06/2019 06:42

Erm, you left your husband sleeping in a wet bed?! I wouldn’t be annoyed or nasty about my partner wetting the bed but I’d not be delighted that they didn’t wake me up and sort it straight away/let me go to sleep in the spare bed!

Livedandlearned · 23/06/2019 06:50

The bed might not be that wet, I expect you woke up just as it was happening. I've done this before but woke up seconds before the actual event iyswim

Impatienceismyvirtue · 23/06/2019 06:58

Even if it’s not “that” wet, sorting it immediately is likely to result in a better outcome for the mattress than letting whatever is there sink in and start to dry before applying a cleaning product.

notyetsleepingthrough · 23/06/2019 07:32

Been there, done that, cleaned the bed. Then told my mother in tears. She laughed and told me happened to her a few times. She then told my grandmother, mu one aunt, my other aunt, her sister in law, her best friend.... I got lots of text messages telling me it is completely normal. This did not help with the embarrassment but might give you a perspective. I left the country a week later. Don't feel the need to go to these extremes. (I did not leave due to the incident but to go to graduate school - but why meddle with the good narrative. So out of sync with the times. Truth is such an unfashionable thing)

Worlds0kayestmum · 23/06/2019 07:37

I did that once as a teen. Even now I can remember the relief of finding the toilet in the dream and the shock when I woke up to find I was weeing. Bicarbonate of soda is good for neutralising urine smells

AllStar14 · 23/06/2019 07:41

Exact same thing happened to me once in my twenties. I can still remember the dream like it was real life. Very strange! Can't be helped though, just one of those things so don't be upset with yourself.

Leave some bicarbonate of soda sprinkled on the mattress then rubbed in a bit. Leave it a few hours then hoover it up. It'll be fine. (And this has happened to me too!!)

madcatladyforever · 23/06/2019 07:43

I never thought I'd ever meet anyone who dreamt they were on the toilet and didn't wake up in time.
Could have happened to any of us. The mattress can be cleaned.

SparrowBo · 23/06/2019 07:45

Have you really left your partner in a urine wet bed? I don't think that's on. Wake him and sort the mattress asap.

Don't be angry with yourself. There things happen. I smashed my favourite candle holder in a dream once Blush

Xiaoxiong · 23/06/2019 07:46

I've also done this, in my 20s after a long, very hot and tiring day where I drank a load of water and then collapsed into a deep sleep. I think I was just so deeply asleep I knew I needed the toilet but couldn't wake up. Never happened before or since.

ArgyMargy · 23/06/2019 07:50

I'm surprised people think this is normal - I've never heard of anyone who's done this without having been very drunk.

LaMarschallin · 23/06/2019 07:53

Poor you.
It's such a common dream that I'm amazed it doesn't happen more often.

NotSoThinLizzy · 23/06/2019 07:54

This happens once every time I'm pregnant it's one of my signs 😂 wouldnt worry to much also can be a sign of UTI's. It'll all seem different later

Loveislandaddict · 23/06/2019 07:54

I did this a few weeks ago. I was mortified. I wasn’t drunk. I also remember thinking it’s time to wee, then as I finished realised I was dreaming and not awake, but had actually wee’d.
