Any doctors or dentists about to look at this lump (pic)

Hi, I'm posting for traffic and hopefully some reassurance. I noticed today there seemed to be something in my throat when I swallow. After much poking around I've noticed this at the back of my mouth. The dentist is now closed and of course Google says its cancer. It doesnt hurt and I haven't had a sore throat. I used to stupidly smoke for 9 years which is what is making me panic. Any advice is appreciated. I will ring in the morning for an appointment. Not sure if I need a doctor or a dentist.

Pic isn’t totally clear but it could be a tonsillolith- basically a lump of food that gets lodged in tonsil and is usually a white or cream colour. Nothing to worry about if it’s that- it’ll come out on its own.

Worth getting someone to have a proper look though!

Glitter00001 · 20/06/2019 17:14

Thank you for your reply red I've had a good poke about but it seems pretty firm.

Google tonsil stones, as above.

Disclaimer always worth getting checked out of you're worried but looks like tonsil stone I've had before. If you can bear it you can sometimes get rid using cotton buds

Actually clicking on pic it looks more like a tonsillar cyst. Also benign! Try not to worry for now and you’ll hopefully get a definite on it from your GP.

Glitter00001 · 20/06/2019 17:17

I've got cotton buds, I'll have a go now. Thank you

Oral cancers usually start with white patches, then like c r that don’t heal properly. This spot looks like a little fluid filled cyst, so very unlikely to be anything more sinister. As pp said, tonsil ‘stones’ are common and usually go away on their own, but certainly getting it looked at by doctor or dentist is the right thing to do with any unexplained lumps.

Glitter00001 · 20/06/2019 17:18

It feels more like a cyst red . I was going to try and pop it with a pin but maybe should leave it till I've seen a doctor.

c r should read *ulcers

Glitter00001 · 20/06/2019 17:20

Thank you faded I'll try not to panic. It's good to know it looks different to anything nasty.

I work at the hospital looking in mouths all day 😂. Looks like a cyst to me. Cancerous lump would be more angry, red with uneven edges etc.

Glitter00001 · 20/06/2019 17:25

Thank you holding that's really reassuring. Should I go to a doctor or a dentist?

Hmmm not sure actually. You want ENT really but that isn't something you can just get access to quickly and might not even be needed (might go away on its own or pop of its own accord) Whichever of dentist / GP you pick is likely to tell you that you need to see the other so go for whichever can see you first?

funmummy48 · 20/06/2019 19:46

I had one of these last month. After 6 weeks of watching it, I saw the GP who gave me 5 days of penicillin. It then went away. I also had a lovely tonsil stone alongside it 😱

Astrid0208 · 20/06/2019 19:51

I had that exact thing, the gp called it a pustule(boak). It didn't go away with the penicillin I was prescribed for an ear infection I had at the same time but disappeared on it's own about 4 months later. I'm a dental nurse so not exactly an expert by any means but that definitely doesn't look like oral cancer.

Glitter00001 · 20/06/2019 20:08

Thank you for the replies. I'm massively reassured it's nothing to worry about. I will get it checked tomorrow just to on the safe side. GP will be easier to get a same day appointment so will try them first. Thanks again

I also think it’s a cyst. Definitely benign looking. (Doctor)

BlueCornishPixie · 20/06/2019 22:55

It looks like a cyst or some other pustule. It's not a tonsil stone, it looks fluid filled.

I wouldn't be in the slightest bit worried that was cancer if I saw it. So don't panic. Either a Dr or dentist should be fine (I'm a dentist) if you are worried

ineedtogotobedanyway · 20/06/2019 23:00

Get some Daktarin for your tongue.

ShoesJerry · 15/02/2020 16:53

@Glitter00001, did you ever work out what this was? Just asking because I have the same!

Cantsleepworried · 18/02/2021 07:34

Hi, hoping that maybe some can post their results for others who are looking for answers to the same problem. I also have this

Blueonblack · 24/03/2021 18:33

Hi just thought I’d let others know I have something that looks similar to this in the back of my throat a little bit away from the tonsil and I was referred to Oral and Maxillofacial and they confirmed it was a tonsillar cyst. I was so worried it was something else. Definitely worth telling the doctors though as mine referred me and I had my appointment within two weeks.

Catlover64 · 19/07/2021 15:00

I have a few of these, feeling worried, I think they appeared same time I got a bad cough and some kind of virus.

Vabelle62 · 22/03/2023 16:52

Glitter - did you ever find out what this was? I have a very similar looking thing now and I am worried too

Did you have to get the tonsil cyst removed surgically?
