Sensation of glass sliver in elbows!

Beamazing · 01/06/2019 12:15

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this? I can't rest on my elbows, not even to turn over in bed, neither can I wear denim shirts or jackets or anything that doesn't stretch, if I do and i bend my arms them I get the worst sharp pain, it literally feels like being sliced with glass. My elbows don't feel or look strange but if I press in a certain place with my fingers it's so painful! I went to my GP who's excellent advice was not to lean on my elbows Hmm. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I do - though it's a 'now and again' thing with me rather than all the time.
Bloody hurts though!

RhubarbIsEvil · 01/06/2019 12:32

What is it?

PrincessTiggerlily · 01/06/2019 12:43

Go to a chiropractor - it could be a nerve thing coming from spine/ neck

Chiropractors are woo merchants.

You'd be better off (medically and financially) having a session with a physio.

johiggins1981 · 13/03/2020 20:02

Did you ever get to the bottom of it?! Intrigued as I have very similar symptoms.

CherryPlum · 13/03/2020 20:17

Is it really really dry skin, with little cuts?

CherryPlum · 13/03/2020 20:18

I mean like broken skin

HappyHammy · 13/03/2020 20:21

Google Crunchy Elbows, it could be anything, nerves, arthritis, inflammation

minniemoll · 13/03/2020 20:24

I get this, it's horrible! No idea what causes it though....

Frlrlrubert · 13/03/2020 21:04

Like housemaid's knee? But in your elbows? Bursitis?

Twospaniels · 13/03/2020 21:22

Tennis elbow?
It’s a strain and nothing to do with playing tennis!

Tempertamtrum · 13/03/2020 21:30

It could be student elbow - I had it for two years (hurt to turn over in bed). Bought a desk elbow pad for work and now better Smile

wonderrotunda · 13/03/2020 21:48

That feeling of glass in a joint sounds like gout

mineofuselessinformation · 13/03/2020 22:01

Have you ever fallen heavily on your elbows?
I had a similar thing, and it turned out that I had several bone chips on my kneecaps.
It took a long time for them to heal (because, as my GP explained, the chips were trying to re-attach, but loving the joint pulls them off again).

mineofuselessinformation · 13/03/2020 22:02

Gaah!
Moving, not loving!
I wanted to add they did heal eventually.

madcatladyforever · 13/03/2020 22:11

I had to have an ulnar nerve decompression and thats the feeling I had a long with some numbness. Like carpal tunnel but elbow.

Ithe was diagnosed with nerve conduction studies.

TheFogsGettingThicker · 14/03/2020 11:24

I have had hideous sharp pains in my elbows and the doctor diagnosed Golfer's Elbow.

Similar to Tennis elbow, but the other side of the joint.

It was from too much scrubbing (I'm a cleaner) and they have improved hugely since cutting my hours. I can't lean on them for long now though.

AppleSighDuh · 15/03/2020 14:21

I have this. It literally had me feeling for shards of glass in my bed when it started. Even though now I know I haven't been cut, I expect to see blood, it's such a sharp sensation. Baffling.

So I’m literally 2 years to late with this reply but I have an answer as what that pain was and hopefully you’re not still dealing with it. It’s a superficial olecranon bursitis, believe me it is. I spent six months going through tests and specialist.. going to orthopedic specialists, pain specialist and rheumatoid specialists. I’ve had x-rays, and MRI and a very painful ultrasound. I’ve ruled out everything from gout to a bone split and arthritis & nerve damage. Although allodynia (pain from touch) is almost always associated with neuropathic pain one specific condition also presents itself as such, and that’s bursitis. People are going to say that it’s not it but the specialist who was able to identify it mentioned that bursitis doesn’t need to have all the classic symptoms and a bursa flare up causes acute pain that is very sensitive to touch hence that feeling of shards of glass between the elbow. It can feel like that or very sore, regardless bursitis of the elbow is a very tricky condition to treat because it requires an immense amount of rest and limited motion to heal. It can last a couple of weeks to a few months depending on your ability to rest and manage the inflammation. For myself compression bandages and heat worked getting some of my pain under control the first few days of the flare up. Again a flare up doesn’t always present itself with the following symptoms i.e swelling, fever or redness. You can have a normal looking elbow but have excruciating pain when pressure is applied to the bursa sac hence the name superficial bursitis. No more mystery folks, this is an ongoing condition for some and other it will clear up after the first flare up. You’re not crazy and your pain is real... believe me I spent countless days feeling like I was losing my mind trying to solve this mystery and find others who knew what was going on.

I know this is old but someone new might be curious. I have the same thing. My dad had gout in his feet and never drank. His diet wasn't good though. I went for a blood test and my urate level is too high. I notice when I drink alcohol my elbows feel like they have glass in them. So painful. Certain foods bring up your uric acid, some bring it down. This is a problem when your kidneys aren't filtering as good as they need to.
My heels feel the same some days.

MaraKaye1 · 12/10/2021 06:16

Thank you for sharing this! I’ve been in so much pain and haven’t known what it was or what to do. I google superficial olecranon bursitis - I don’t have any swelling but it talks about I just have horrible pain like shards of glass in my elbows

MaraKaye1 · 12/10/2021 06:17

I can’t believe I’m reading this right now. I just said to my husband I have to get my denim jacket off it is killing my elbow. Did you see the comment below about superficial bursitis?

Obviouspretzel · 12/10/2021 07:21

I've had this for years. It is in only one elbow and if I lean on it the wrong way the pain is blinding. But then I quickly move, and then I forget about it until it happens again. I think I've just learnt subconsciously to not put weight on it in that way. Have never been bothered to question with s doctor...

Curioussally · 27/01/2024 18:18
