What the fuck is this horror?

I've just had gogglebox from last week (I think) on in the background and it caught my attention when noises which put me on edge started coming through. They mentioned asmr??? I've never heard of it before and after googling it I am horrified!

Weird creepy whispering and cringing and horrible mouth noises. Scrunching and rattling and all sorts of crazy shit done really close to a microphone! Why on earth would anyone think that is a good thing?
It's literally a collection of all sounds which make me want to scream and stab somebody. I could feel my blood pressure rising just looking up what it was.

But these asmr noises are physically painful to hear
Yes! I very nearly started this very thread myself last week after seeing the same program you mentioned OP but I thought actually I’d much rather forget it and put it behind me Grin. It genuinely makes me feel physically ill. Whatever effect it’s supposed to have it clearly doesn’t work for me.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 03/05/2019 21:07

I've not looked on the internet for them, but i definitely have this.

My CDT teacher at school used to do a little presentation at the start of class to demonstrate what we were making that day

OMG her voice..... i used to totally zone out. I get a weird, but nice feeling in the back of my throat too.

Rarely get it, but it's lovely when i do

cupofteaplease · 03/05/2019 21:10

Urgh, my daughters love this! They watch it on their phones to help them fall asleep now apparently?! They showed me one of a girl eating raw honeycomb, it turned my stomach!

dudsville · 03/05/2019 21:13

Fascinating. I will look this up tomorrow.

Whathappenedtothelego · 03/05/2019 21:16

OP I am with you! I listened to a podcast about it and the noises filled me with actual rage, I wanted to roar and smash things. (Which I just want to point out is not normal for me Grin. ) I feel like I have the opposite reaction to everyone else, it gets my fight or flight going like nothing else.

BummyKnocker · 03/05/2019 21:20

I watch ones where they sketch you, or measure you.

I used to love friends writing in my rough book at school, or an IT person fiddling with my PC when it went wrong. Tingles galore!

The noise ones are horrible, unless it's sketching noises.

megletthesecond · 03/05/2019 21:20

Gentle Whispering origami and make vids are my favourites.
Even her recent one with her newborn routine was relaxing Confused.

megletthesecond · 03/05/2019 21:22

Make up vids that should say.

And yes, bummy I love it when IT have to tweak my computer.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 03/05/2019 21:25

Oh yes the IT man sets mine off too - forgot that

Laodamia · 03/05/2019 21:29

People cleaning IT equipment does it for me.

I've watched this video lots of times. Find it so soothing. Grin Grin

IWantMyHatBack · 03/05/2019 21:30

ASMR is horrible. I don't mind that song, but the whispering crunching weird videos are actual torture on my ears.
I'm autistic though and it triggers all the wrong sensory things. I really hope it doesn't become too mainstream

Titsywoo · 03/05/2019 21:54

How would it become "too mainstream"? Confused I doubt they are going to start putting asmr videos on between adverts on bbc1!

BigStripeyBastard · 03/05/2019 22:00

WhispersRed on youtube is a delight. She does some really good, not too whispery hairbrushing videos and even when she does talk, she's just so damn pretty and kind and smiley, I want her to cuddle me, smooth down my hair and tell me how nice I am. She's a flame haired, maternal figure and she's just bloody adorable.

If you like a weird, occasional horror-type ASMR, I recommend Ephemeral Rift. He is occasionally hilarious..... not quite the object of ASMR, granted, but great. Some of his Arkham Asylum ones are bloody wonderful.

IWantMyHatBack · 03/05/2019 22:18

"How would it become "too mainstream"

It's in a couple of songs that are played on the radio a lot. Advertising will start using it very soon. Stuff like that.
Its very good for grabbing your attention. . It makes me want to rip my ears off.

CaptainJaneway62 · 03/05/2019 22:33

I love watching(well listening really) certain ASMR videos...I tend to watch a small selection of the same ones...absolutely totally relaxing for me, but not anything to to with watching people eat food...errgh!!

Gentle Whispering and Gibi are my favourites.

I have never gotten to the end of a video yet as I always fall asleep!

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 03/05/2019 22:40

Another one here for whom ASMR has the complete opposite effect; It makes me stabby with knives. I HATE it. HATE it. The whispering is the worst. Makes me want to punch their whispery faces to a pulp.

DareDevil223 · 03/05/2019 22:44

I'm with you OP, it's the least relaxing thing I can think of. Whispering and clicky noises makes me deeply twitchy and unhappy, It's horrible.

DramaAlpaca · 03/05/2019 22:45

I hate it too, it makes me feel irritable & on edge, the complete opposite of relaxed.

This is the whole point. You have no idea how you're going to react or what you're going to physically feel until you hear it. Maybe tingles over the scalp or feeling like you want to vomit! No one knows. I get a scalp tingle but my DH just stared at me like I was going bonkers mad!

IWantMyHatBack · 03/05/2019 22:51

ASMR chewing/tapping/scratching is basically how I hear twats normal life noises. Sniffing, chewing, nail tapping etc. It's like there's an amplifier on the annoying noises.

It's utter torture for me. I don't understand why people would seek this out.

OTOH... the sensory hypersensitivity means certain music hits a certain place and it's very satisfying, so with that perspective I kind of understand it.

troppibambini · 03/05/2019 23:10

I hate the whispering, it gives me rage.
I just want to shout "fucking speak up I can't hear you"
It makes my ears itch.

VanessaShanessaJenkins · 04/05/2019 10:18

This is clearly far bigger already than I realised. I'm glad I hadn't heard of it until now and would quite like to un-hear about it!
I do find it quite fascinating that part of the population think it's wonderful and some of us literally turn crazy with rage over it.

I also discovered ASMR this week and my reaction was also pure WTAF!

I have the Calm app and love the bedtime stories, nature sounds and ambient music, but the ASMR stuff gives me the creeps and has completely the opposite effect to what it's supposed to.

I guess it's just a Marmite thing.

MintyCedric · 04/05/2019 10:26

It's like there's an amplifier on the annoying noises.

Exactly.

I listened to one of the whispery ones the other night and lasted about 90 seconds...it made me incredibly anxious.
