Never done low carb before but I've been thinking about it then came across this thread. How does it work?

I'll post some pre-Bootcamp info, @Cheeseandapple, but in essence:

• it lasts for 10 weeks, with the first two weeks being the strictest
• you don't eat any pasta, rice, bread, flour, pastry, cakes, biscuits, sugar, sweets, potatoes, sweetcorn or sweet potatoes
• in the first two weeks, you don't eat any nuts/seeds, fruit, chocolate or drink alcohol (but these can be introduced in moderation after the first two weeks)

What you will be eating is unprocessed meat and fish, eggs, plenty of vegetables and salad, cheese, butter and cream.

There are just ten rules to follow (I'll list those), and you don't need to count carbs or calories as long as you follow these rules.

Each week I start a chat thread, and post a link to our spreadsheet, where you record your weight (if you want to - it's not obligatory).

Then we generally chat about what we're eating, how we're feeling, any questions/challenges people have, and any other things you'd like to talk about!

I aim to keep everyone on track by wielding my Big Stick although herding cats is probably easier, and there are several seasoned Bootcampers who provide invaluable advice and help as well.

This (from the mayoclinic.org) is a very brief explanation of how low carbing works:

Your body uses carbohydrates as its main fuel source. Complex carbohydrates (starches) are broken down into simple sugars during digestion. They're then absorbed into your bloodstream, where they're known as blood sugar (glucose). In general, natural complex carbohydrates are digested more slowly and they have less effect on blood sugar. Natural complex carbohydrates provide bulk and serve other body functions beyond fuel.

Rising levels of blood sugar trigger the body to release insulin. Insulin helps glucose enter your body's cells. Some glucose is used by your body for energy, fueling all of your activities, whether it's going for a jog or simply breathing. Extra glucose is usually stored in your liver, muscles and other cells for later use or is converted to fat.

The idea behind the low-carb diet is that decreasing carbs lowers insulin levels, which causes the body to burn stored fat for energy and ultimately leads to weight loss.

Is the aim to maintain low carb after the 10 weeks? If not, what do most people do to keep the weight off?

Not salad cream but mayonnaise is allowed. Some are more low carb than others though. The Lidl one is good (and reasonably priced) and I think de Louis (?) is another one people mention but is more pricey. Or make your own

@Cheeseandapple a lot of people just keep going after the ten weeks, because they still have weight to lose. I always keep a chat thread going for that reason.

If you've lost the weight you want to/have reached your target, then it's all about maintenance - which is actually quite a tricky thing. What you mustn't do is to go straight back to eating a high carb diet (which is probably what you were eating before!), because otherwise you'll simply put the weight back on.

What you have to work out is how many carbs per day you can tolerate. And this is tricky, because there's no absolute guide to this - some people can tolerate quite a lot and others not very much.

As a rough rule of thumb, if you keep your carbs around 100g per day, aiming to eat no more than 30g per meal, then you should be OK - but you'll have to try it and see!

The best advice is to add carbs into your diet gradually, keeping an eye on your weight. Once you start to put weight back on, then you know you're eating too much.

I did lowcarb for 2 weeks before Christmas and lost a few pounds. Put it all back on again the following 2 weeks! But I know this can work.

I disliked eating so much meat, though. I'd prefer to use veggie options.

I did LC with you a couple of years ago and loved it. But I've had a baby and other issues since then so have a stone and a bit to lose. I'm still breastfeeding my fucking enormous 2 year old, but I think by now it should be fine and if it makes my milk crappy and her stop shrieking 'Booby milk' at me on the bus then that's just a bonus!
