Find It Hard Not To Correct People

I think I am turning into my DM, as she is very hot on grammer (or is it grammar?!), spelling etc. I have got into trouble a few times on Facebook etc as I have (unintentionally) offended people who are dyslexic. A lot of the time though it isn't dyslexia or learning difficulties but just laziness or ignorance. I just can't seem to help myself! Yesterday I saw a pic of a Facebook friend at her Christmas party - her DH had captioned it "X's Xmas Due" instead of "Do". I commented that since he had written due, I thought he was saying that she was expecting again. I noticed today that the comment had been removed & the caption now read "X's Christmas Party". I felt bad! But as I said, I just can't seem to help myself. I wonder what some folks actually learn in school. Does anyone else get bothered by stuff like that? Misused apostrophes are another one!

Sorry OP, correcting others' spelling and punctuation is annoying enough but this is a prime example of "knowing a little about a lot," I suspect. Your post suggests your own grasp is basic at best.

Just leave everyone to their mistakes and concentrate on your own shit instead. I have an English degree and write for my job (sometimes even starting sentences with 'but' Grin) and know a lot of people who either struggle, or don't care about the quality of what they write or say. It's frustrating when it's important to you but correcting people just makes you look like an epic twat.

This Is A Thread Title Not A Fall Out Boy Song.

Stop overusing capital letters!

Yohooo · 20/12/2018 11:15

Mumsnet has a whole topic just for those of you who care about spag. It's called Pedant's Corner and is the Other Stuff section (I think).

FortniteIsTheNewCrack. I'm sorry to hear that you have had problems that have caused you to lose some of you SPAG skills. I don't have any excuse for mine. I'm just a bit thick when it comes to some things. It's not that I don't care and it's not that I think it doesn't matter - I just find it difficult. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ok, playing devil's advocate, genuine question: if someone were to make a mathematical error or quote a scientific fact incorrectly during a discussion or debate online, would you think correcting them to be acceptable? Or would you think the people highlighting the errors were sad individuals with no lives that want to put people down as PPs have suggested? Why would it be different promoting basic SPaG?

Villanellesproudmum · 20/12/2018 11:50

I think I’m going to have to try with and without cherries, all in the name of research.

snowie01 · 20/12/2018 11:52
Hmm
IknowTheBoswellJoke · 20/12/2018 11:54

I WISH people would correct more. I am awful at grammar, the few rules I have leaned, have been directly from people correcting me! I never take it badly, I am always happy to have had a free 'lesson'.
However, when written down, with no friendly face to back it up, it could look mean.
Include a disclaimer of being a pedant, and lots of smileys! Xx

BitOutOfPractice · 20/12/2018 13:22

Villanellesproudmum Selfless. That's what you are. Selfless.

Knittink · 20/12/2018 14:12

LadyRochford - that's not quite the same though. The vast majority of grammatical and spelling errors you see online do not impede meaning. (I know people often claim to be baffled by someone's ungrammatical post, but we all know they usually aren't really.)
Pointing out a mathematical or scientific error which actually negates the person's point in an argument is totally different. Though it's also worth noting that generally people who are bad at maths don't come in for the same vitriol and accusations of being thick or ignorant as people with poor spag.

I love snowballs, I used to nick the Advocaat as a kid and drink it as I thought it was custard. Never understood why I had a raging headache the next day Grin

Squatternutbosh123 · 20/12/2018 14:27

No cherries though

Christmasfairy07 · 24/12/2018 00:07

How do I get this thread deleted? I reported it but obviously it’s still here!

BitOutOfPractice · 24/12/2018 00:13

I assume that's you op.

What's your reason for deletion? Apart from
"I look like a dick here age I don't like that"?

Have you changed your mind about correcting people?

cowfacemonkey · 24/12/2018 00:20

I don’t suppose MNHQ have time to delete all the threads that didn’t go well for an OP.

InSightMars · 24/12/2018 00:29

Yeah, I sympathize OP, I just can’t help correcting people who are dicks about correcting others on social media; I take particular pleasure in targeting those who don’t even know whether it’s spelt ‘grammer’ or grammar.

longwayoff · 24/12/2018 04:44

Get a grip OP. Just be thankful you're not GregG Wallace.
