Have you ever seen a ghost?

I haven't. I'm curious but I don't think I'd want to see one, not if I was alone and scared anyway.

But Halloween is here (🎃 👻) and I keep reading spooky stories and it's got me thinking 😊

... Who on here has seen a ghost?

@EalingBroadway not me, but DH was out with a friend on a bike ride, crossing a common. They cycled past a person but immediately after they passed they turned to each other and both said at the same time "did you see a face?" Both said they hadn't and both turned back but there was no one there. Yet both could independently describe the person and their clothing.

StealingYourWiFi · 29/10/2018 19:41

I think so but I'm not sure. I used to work in the A+E dept about 10 years ago. I was pushing a patient in a wheelchair alone to the wards, theres a glass double door that opens when you press a button. As I approached it with my patient I could see a patient with a drip stand walking closely behind us in the reflection of the glass. When the door opened I turned to acknowledge the patient (in case it was an escapee Grin) but there was nobody there??

Boopsy, it’s more that it’s a bit of a pain to type out! But I’ll give it a go. It might take a while 😀.

We’ve been in our house since 2004, all fine, nothing happened for years. Then a few years ago, my dc (3 of them who were mid late teens) started saying they were seeing a ghost as a reflection in a mirror in our sitting room, and a couple of other sightings. I didn’t believe them quite honestly. I was a sahm at the time and hadn’t seen anything despite being at home a lot, and we have dogs who I assumed would be aware of anything untoward.

One day we accidentally bumped into the people who we had bought the house from, and the teenage son when he realised who we were, said “that house is really haunted!”

I relayed this to my eldest ds (think he was about 18/19) in a “ha ha isn’t that ridiculous” kind of way. And he said quite seriously something along the lines of “I know, we’ve been telling you. Just look in the mirror” So I did.

I was by myself one day andwas expecting bugger all, it was a sunny day, but couldn’t believe what I saw. I stood in front of the mirror, had no idea what I was looking for. It took about 30 seconds. It appeared as a hooded figure, it had an anxious air about it, and was staring out of our garden doors down the garden. It was male. It wasn’t recognisable as a person, just a figure. It was sort of hovering. I got the impression that it was static, kind of caught in a moment in time, and wouldn’t start wandering around or anything like that. I stepped away before the figure disappeared. Life changing in a small way.

In due course I asked ds “this ghost you think you’ve seen, what is it like and what does it do?” He described exactly what I had seen.

I haven’t told them I’ve seen it. I haven’t looked again.

I have now put a picture where the mirror was. The spot it appearedin is a busy part of the house we walk through a dozen times a day, can’t feel anything when walking though it. The dogs don’t appear phased out by anything.

So there you have it. I know what I saw. I told DH, he was exceptionally sceptical and I told him to look. I don’t know whether he has. I’ve told one other person, and I won’t tell anyone else. I don’t want to be considered crazy or delusional, I’m about the most down to earth honest person my friends must now. Once we’ve moved (no plans to), I’ll tell my kids, I know they’ll go through life being disbelieved if they tell people.

What I don’t understand is why I’ve only ever seen one, and only at the grand age of 50. I probably wouldn’t have believed it of anyone else. I will now.

I saw my dgf drive past our house, wave at me and looked me in the eye, 3 days after he passed. We had lots of activity in a flat I used to live in, dp and I regularly saw a shadow man walk through the bathroom wall. At present we have a ghost cat in our house, seen it about 3 times and felt it lay on my bed.

MamaJune · 29/10/2018 20:16

I'm an estate agent and in one of the houses I once had on the market in Portland I always saw a small child run past the doors but the house was empty and had been for many years.
I sent my DH round and didn't tell him why or mention what I had seen and he came out very uneasy and felt scared by something in the house with him but he couldn't tell me what/why.

The family who bought the house put it up for sale about 5 months later, but I never heard anymore and don't live in the area any more.

Aprilislonggone · 29/10/2018 20:25

My neighbour /friend was killed, the night before we moved he appeared in my bedroom in his biker leathers! What a bloody shock it was but comforting he had come to day goodbye - in my mind anyway!

Laiste · 29/10/2018 20:25

EalingBroadway - Has anyone been in a situation where they AND a partner have both seen the same ghost, at the same time and could describe experience independently?

Yes. Me and DH. A couple of years ago in a field near our house.

In my late teens i saw a woman scrubbing the steps of what's left of a listed building which had been converted into a DIY store. This was at about 2am. A second look and she was gone.

I've also been the intended audience of poltergeist activity.

ThroughThickAndThin01 when you say it's life changing in a small way and hard to talk about i know exactly what you mean.

oldbirdy · 29/10/2018 20:27

My childhood home had stairs with a small half landing. I always ran up them, hated the feeling on the stairs. Never saw anything but definitely heard things - if you were alone in the house upstairs, you'd sometimes hear someone running up the stairs. Several times I thought it was my sister home from school and came out of my room to say hello...to find no one there. Once my Mum made up a bed in my sister's old room for a visitor, only to realise she had forgotten to put a towel out. She tried to open the door but it was hard...and when she got it open, the bedside table had been pushed behind the door. This involved moving it several feet.

Mum has sinced moved to an even older house but funnily enough we don't hear or see anything weird in it at all.

I posted on another thread recently about bad vibes from certain houses I'll repost it as the house I grew up in was really haunted. I'll just go and find it.

rosieposey · 29/10/2018 20:41

Sorry this is long ...

The house I grew up in was terribly haunted, constant walking up and down the long corridor daytime, eve it didn't matter and when we had friends there or not. when my dad was converting it from the cob barn that it was to the house that it is now there was a hole for the stairs for a couple of weeks whilst they put new stairs in and something pushed me backwards down the staircase hole, concussion and a weekend in hospital was the result. I didn't trip, I was 12 and a fair way from the edge I fell backwards and I remember being pushed.

It was 2 miles or so from the nearest village so in the middle of nowhere. My Ex DH and I bought it off my brothers when my dad died, goodness knows why as I knew it's history and DH worked away in London during the week and I was there on my own - I bought a bull mastiff puppy.

I was there alone with 3 children, eldest DD who is now 26 remembers clearly when we moved in the first morning after waking up and seeing 'black tube like fingers' coming up between the wall and her bed, she was 7 at the time and didn't tell me for quite a while, she was delighted ( again without telling me why ) when I moved her bed to the opposite side of the room to make room for a large chest of drawers, she didn't see them again.

mirrors would fly off the wall with the nail and wire intact on the back laying on the floor. my sister saw a ghost in my doorway of my bedroom and didn't tell me until I moved out ( I was moving out as a result of our divorce ) we lasted two years in that place. She was bunking in my room, DH had moved out by that time. She went to my mums the next day ( she was visiting the area to see us both as Mum and I lived 40 miles apart). As she wouldn't stay another night there.

My Mum babysat for me once and the electric went, it was stormy outside and she heard me calling her repeatedly ... except I was at my friend's ten miles away. I had to get a taxi back straight away as Mum was so scared in that massive place on her own.

We had a summer dinner party with all the windows open and every member heard a child signing through the window over the chatter. Children all upstairs asleep though as it was 12.30am.

Saw and heard some awful things in there and I've since heard although we live two counties away now ( my sil works on the village pub though) that the lady who lives there with her husband says they have a ghost and it doesn't like women.

I think something terrible happened there, when we sold the house ( it was a huge 6 bed barn conversion ) we only sold it with the land it came with approx an acre.

The other land that had belonged to my dad and was with the house my two brothers had actually kept it when they sold the house to exdh and I, it was a large field and an orchard. My Db fell on some hard times and split up with his dw and had to put a mobile home in the field when he had no where to live for a couple of months. He didn't live in the house growing up but obviously came to visit as he lived with his Mum my df's ex. He said that he was scared living there in that caravan even though the 5 acre field was some way from the house and that there was a horrible atmosphere when he stepped outside his caravan at night for a cigarette.

Just before I moved out put only neighbour, who lived about a five min walk away shot himself in his barn no one has any luck there.

Luckily my brother is happily in a new relationship with a lovely home together. ( this is 5 years ago) they still own the land and my db runs a business from there so I visit occasionally. Always in the daytime and always briefly. ( tbh as far as the house was concerned it didn't matter if it was day or night for the shenanigans)

I've bought quite a few houses in my 47 years and only once have I loved anywhere else with 'bad vibes' thank goodness we were only renting it to 'try it out' and still owned our other house, this is with my now DH, we only lasted six months and moved back to our house.

Please, do! I've walked out of places that felt bad.

EscapeToTheMoon · 29/10/2018 20:58

I haven’t but ive had sensations which I cannot explain.

There is one at my place of work. A school and she is from the Victorian era. She doesn’t like any activity after school hours like meetings or parents evening ect. She will walk through the corridor -just to and fro.

She appeared the other morning to my colleague. She was in the classroom and saw someone walking the corridor to the kitchen. She thought it was the cook.

Then the cook walked in.... she was late. Im yet to see her, but don’t really want to.

CoachBombay · 29/10/2018 21:21

Me and DH had a really strange experience.

We were staying in a Inn above a pub some years ago, as a halfway stop. All was fine we checked in and were shown to our room. Nice room, clean and comfortable.

We had dinner that evening but no drinks. We retired to our bedroom about 10pm.

Anyway we open the door to our room and it's cold in the room. I ask DH if the heater is on he puts his hand on it and says yes, must have just come on.

Well we get changed and DH goes to the bathroom to brush his teeth. I'm sat on the bed folding my jeans up when I watch the lamp move from one side of the desk to the middle. I shout at DH come see this. He runs in panicked shouting someone is in the bathroom, stay in the bedroom. Apparently he had seen a shadow in the mirror behind him and the shower curtain move, DH returns to the bathroom to pull the shower curtain, but nobody is in there.

He comes to bed. Hen we both again watch the lamp move on the table. I'm now feeling really uneasy, DH is the sceptic but also says aloud "wtf is going on". I say let's just get some sleep, well we can't go to sleep we both just lay there awake.

Nothing else happened that evening, we told the pub owners in check out, and they said it does happen now and again and apologised.

I have on my own seen a ghost, but it was in a graveyard, I went to lay flowers on a relative's grave and walked past a woman mourning at a grave sobbing crying. I turned the corner of the oath heading to the grave I was going to, but I had an urge to look back and as I did I watched the woman disappear, as in vanish to thin air. I panicked and ran to my car never made it to my relative's grave.

I didnt see anything but felt uneasy in a famous hotel once.

Only when looked at photos taken next day there was so many faces and orbs in them.

Still confused what they where/are

moolady1977 · 30/10/2018 09:32

I saw my ddad the week after he died, my dcs babysitter saw him too, I was pregnant with my dd when he died and when she was about 10 months old started babbling to someone in the corner of her bedroom as she got a bit older she used to pick up a picture of my ddad and smile once she was talking properly she would pick up the picture and talk to it, one day I asked her who it was and without a second delay she told me it was her grandpa, I've seen him a few times and sometimes smell his tobacco smoke. I was decorating for my dmum and dsdad and was up a ladder (in house on my own told not to climb as ladders were a bit wonky) I got the overpowering smell of a pipe being smoked told my dsdad and he said his dad smoked a pipe i get followed round work by the smell of a pipe. In my old job a few of us could hear children laughing and talking (worked in a warehouse). Worked in a pub saw quite a few of the old regulars who had died too

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 30/10/2018 09:46

Why did I read this Shock

But yes I've seen a few but not for a few years now. They sort of just left me.

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 30/10/2018 09:57

No. But I know a good joke about seeing ghosts.

AdamNichol · 30/10/2018 10:15

Worked for a number of years in a supposedly haunted small stately home (Keele Hall). It did weddings, conferences, etc along with academic departments upstairs (it's on a Uni campus). I've been alone in all parts of that building at all hours of day and night, etc. Not a sausage. Some of the long term staff swear by the ghost of Lady Sneyd - some story about her having OCD about hair brushing which lead to her husband cutting her hands off - which is replayed on google but mostly recycled from student forums. Keele Hall was visited by Alistair Crowley though.
Found plenty of hidden stair cases, blocked off rooms, etc. But nothing even faintly ghostly. Sadly.

Walnutsandsquirrels · 30/10/2018 10:20

My brother “spoke” (the voice was inside my head) to me when I found his body. He wanted to reassure me as the circumstances were very distressing. He was a very kind person, so it fits in with the way he was in life.

It had a very profound effect on me and shifted my worldview a few inches. I don’t tell many people as those I tell clearly think I’m mad.

BrickByBrick · 30/10/2018 11:03

I was very sceptical, then I went to a work meeting at a care home type setting. The staff were telling us various stories, they were utterly convinced , I'm not planning on finding out the truth.

Cakemonger · 30/10/2018 11:53

No, never. I've always assumed this is because I don't believe in them and nothing will convince me otherwise!

April2020mom · 30/10/2018 12:15

I took my little sister to a haunted house for Halloween. She swears she spotted a ghost. And a black cat as well.
