Flat earthers- how is this a thing?

So someone I know has been posting some articles on Facebook and it turns out she is a massive flat earther- completely convinced the earth isn't a sphere but a flat circle, no gravity, sun the same size as the moon etc. When we have clear evidence this isn't the case how can people be so sure they are right? I'm just totally baffled by it. How on earth can you reason with someone who is so deluded and claims or your facts are propaganda and that NASA have tricked us to keep us all feeling inferior!

Ooh good questions, will be interesting to see what she answers.

I always wonder what is on the bottom of a flat earth. Even a flat piece of paper has two sides...

EnglishRose1320 · 20/09/2018 10:45

Tiggles- I hadn't even thought about that but now I am intrigued, will ask her if I see her on the school run.

I work with a flat earther...and he is massively into conspiracy theories too.. 'they' are manipulating us apparently...Hmm

TerfsUp · 20/09/2018 11:23

Eh. There are any number of people who plug their ears and say "la la la, I can't hear you" when confronted with scientific evidence. Flat earthers are just one group. Anti-vaxxers are another.

Atalune · 20/09/2018 11:27

Wow!

Some people are dumb or neurotic. Or both.

HopeGarden · 20/09/2018 11:31

I just love the idea that teleporting is considered more likely that a spherical earth.

^^ this.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/09/2018 11:39

that NASA have tricked us to keep us all feeling inferior

What are we supposed to be inferior about?

How does it work for those that have sailed round the world?

Did they and their boats get transported to the other side?

What did they see when they looked back?

These are all the things I want to know

Khaleesi78 · 20/09/2018 11:39

I always thought flat earthers were just trolling on an epic scale but it's become apparent that they actually really believe!

Worse is that most flat earthers seem to be educated, intelligent people! How can they get it so wrong???

citiesofbismuth · 20/09/2018 11:49

Ridiculous aren’t they?

My sil is very well educated and has a good science degree, yet refuses to believe that dinosaurs existed. She is a christian fundie though and they believe all manner of rubbish.

bananamonkey · 20/09/2018 11:50

People = Thick

I think like pp said it makes them feel special for thinking they know the "real" truth and that everyone else has been conned by a conspiracy Hmm

Bananalanacake · 20/09/2018 11:59

But what about photography from space showing the earth as a round ball.

citiesofbismuth · 20/09/2018 12:04

How do they explain the massive depth of the oceans? The earth must be a cube to account for that Grin

disorganisedXX · 20/09/2018 12:11

Probably a flat earthing anti-vaxxer, Theresa May announced that transwomen are women a few weeks ago. So the U.K.'s big cheese has decided that men can turn into women and the law is changing to silence those who prefer their facts science based. Remember Galileo?

I am of the opinion that humanity may very well be majority crackpot.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 20/09/2018 12:14

Same reason President Trump is a thing, and Brexit is a thing.

Many, many people are fucking idiots, and the internet has given them all the information they need to become even more stupid.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 20/09/2018 12:18

Never underestimate peoples stupidity. If you think that people can't possibly get any stupider, remember that Donald Trump has access to nuclear weapons.

dizzycatdance2 · 20/09/2018 12:50

Our skipper on a sail boat trip was a flat earthed.

Didn't believe in the moon landing, satellites etc.

A little ironic given that he was using GPS to navigate and , out at sea, we could actually SEE the curvature of the earth !

SpeverendRooner · 20/09/2018 12:51

You people have flat earthers all wrong. They're brave individuals, struggling to tell the truth against an oppressive conspiracy. You want to know how brave they are? The only thing they fear... is sphere itself.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 20/09/2018 12:58

The only thing they fear... is sphere itself.

Omigod that made my day. Thank you.

TooTrueToBeGood · 20/09/2018 13:00

Just smile and walk away. As a wise man once said, don't argue with fools, they'll just drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

MsHomeSlice · 20/09/2018 13:03

She feels less oppressed does she?? That gravity is a bastard for oppression!

I'd make a little facebook list for her, name it something unkind like Cuckoo Chums and set her in as founding member and then hide the group.

steppemum · 20/09/2018 13:14

The only thing they fear... is sphere itself.

Oh that is priceless!

There is a whole section of the Christian world who believe in a flat earth because they believe the heavens are an arch above the world and take Biblical phrases and make physical entities from them. I'm trying to remember, but things like the firmament and the 'waters of the deep' and the 'heavens above' and rather than treating them as expressions, they see them as data.
I am a Christian and these people are scary.

I once inherited some books from a family, and it had a book about dinosaurs - great I thought. Until I read it.
They disappeared because they weren't on the ark apparently, and lots more besides.

steppemum · 20/09/2018 13:16

There is a mn who is a member of the flat earth society. She explained that this is not actually a group of people who believe in a flat earth, but rather a group who deliberately put the opposite side to any argument in order to make people present their arguments in more coherent and accurate/scientific way.

TerfsUp · 20/09/2018 13:30

Interesting perspective but they sound annoying.
