BA customer data leak

Aridane · 07/09/2018 06:40

Just got the e mail below.

Increasingly getting emails saying my data may have been hacked but reassuring that no credit card / financial details obtained. This one seems different.

“Dear Customer,

From 22:58 BST 21 August 2018 until 21:45 BST 5 September 2018 inclusive, the personal and financial details of customers making or changing bookings at ba.com, and on our app were compromised. The stolen data did not include travel or passport information.

The breach has been resolved and our website is working normally.

We’re deeply sorry, but you may have been affected. We recommend that you contact your bank or credit card provider and follow their recommended advice.

We take the protection of your personal information very seriously. Please accept our deepest apologies for the worry and inconvenience that this criminal activity has caused.

Further information can be found at ba.com.

Yours sincerely”

Yes, I was talking about a PIN for Experian. For me it says thanks for joining, your membership has been activated (etc) and then “Your unique PIN will be sent by first class post to your current address. You will need your PIN to be able to log in to the service for the first time”.

How strannge our processes were different. I was asked to give credit card details (not for charging but for ID), dob, address and date I moved to property. Then Experian gave various bits of info I was asked to verify - eg giving me names of 3 credit cards and selecting which one Imhad. And given nag me 3sets of 4digits and asks me me to confirm which were the last 4 digits of my bank account.

So all set up onlimeW

Now I type this out it sounds like Experian are stealing my identity!

How strange! Let’s hope we’ve both been linked through to the genuine Experian site and not hacked/skimmed (again) Grin

Maybe Experian couldn’t cope with all the new users signing up courtesy of BA and so ended up having to stagger users by sending out pins in the post@!

cortex10 I got the same response from Tesco Bank. My new card arrived yesterday and I hadn't got round to putting it in my purse. The old one didn't work today, so they were pretty quick at cancelling the old one once the new one arrived.

Is anyone going to claim compensation? I think I'm going to sign up with the group action thing that was mentioned on moneysavingexpert article. I can't see BA offering any sort of compensation, apart from if you've suffered financial loss. I'm annoyed that they were so careless with my data and I've had to have new cards, I spent the last day of my holiday trying to find out if we were affected and calling the bank etc. Now I'm having to change the card number on accounts which I have it set up on. Grrrr.

I too am waiting for an Experian pin. I wonder if some people they are able to identify successfully using the questions online, but others they aren't sure so send a pin through the post to confirm.

Annoyingly, I made two separate bookings within the affected period and used two different credit cards, so have to have them both replaced.

cortex10 · 18/09/2018 17:54

Same here Jenny - my card was rejected at Sainsburys today Blush- lucky I had my debit card to hand. Got home to find the replacement had arrived. I am also having to update sites like Amazon where the card is stored (and have just had an email to say that payment for my Amazon order this morning was rejected as well BlushBlushThanks for mentioning the possible group claim which I wasn't aware of.

JennyWreny · 18/09/2018 18:04

Yes, it was a bit embarrassing this morning in the supermarket because I wasn't sure if I'd put the wrong pin in. I tried the other card, but of course because both of mine had been affected that didn't work either. Then instead of getting my debit card out (which I was sure would be fine) I got my National Trust membership card which is a similar colour Blush.

I think there are a couple of different group claims (I googled), but I think I am going to go with the one which was mentioned on the MSE article.
