How do you pronounce ‘troll’?

I’ve always said troll with a short o, like in doll, but it seems more common to say it with a long o, like in roll.

So, which is correct? Or is it like scone and has two correct pronunciations?

Haha i just can't see the word troll without hearing it. Have you seen 'Trolls the musical' on Youtube? They sing trolls rather poshly

AmberLangslow · 27/08/2018 18:45

How the hell do doll and roll sound the same? 😊

(I know it’s an accent thing just not one I can get my head round without actually hearing it.)

If I heard it with a short o I would think trawl rather than troll.

DannyDogg · 27/08/2018 18:54

doll and roll are the same here like pole and troll and vole and mole

Ontopofthesunset · 27/08/2018 19:13

Short 'o' like doll. Not like 'trawl' which is 'tr-all' (to rhyme with fall and tall). I think the 'trole' pronunciation has become more common as that seems to be the US pronunciation which is used for internet trolling.

FeminaSum · 27/08/2018 19:21

Rhymes with roll and hole. I pronounce doll differently

corythatwas · 27/08/2018 19:30

Doll rather than roll. But then I'm Scandinavian so my opinion probably doesn't count.

RatRolyPoly · 27/08/2018 19:33

Like bowl for me.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 27/08/2018 19:38

Doll and roll are pronounced the same for me.

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/08/2018 19:44

How can doll and roll be pronounced the same way?Confused

firehousedog1 · 27/08/2018 19:45

Of course they sound the same. All three words share the same final three letters.

PhilomenaButterfly · 27/08/2018 19:47

To rhyme with roll.

Xiaoxiong · 27/08/2018 19:50

firedog yes just like Slough and slough! They have all the same letters Grin

Speaking of, I just read an old book that spelled troll as "trull" to rhyme with hull. Or possibly to rhyme with rule?! Another pronunciation cat among the MN pigeons...

PhilomenaButterfly · 27/08/2018 19:52

How does Quirrell say it? I don't remember the film.

lottiegarbanzo · 27/08/2018 20:01

Troll rw hole to me, though I have heard troll rw doll.

How can doll and roll sound the same though? Are you pronouncing doll as dole, or roll as, well, rol? I have never, ever heard roll as rol, anywhere! Where are you?

3stonedown · 27/08/2018 20:04

I've sat here saying roll and doll for a few minutes now and they sound the same to me. South West accent.

I'm trying to work out how they are said differently, I think (!) I do a long o on both but some regions do a short o on doll.

FuzzyCustard · 27/08/2018 20:07

Rhyming with "doll".
Otherwise, "I'm a troll, fol de rol, I'll eat you up for dinner" just doesn't work.

DannyDogg · 27/08/2018 20:10

Yup doll as dole, rhymes with roll and troll and bowl 😂 don’t know how doll can be pronounced differently

FuzzyCustard · 27/08/2018 20:12

I've truly never heard of a "Barbie Dole". That just sounds very odd to me. And I have lived all over the UK.

AmberLangslow · 27/08/2018 20:13

cory I believe it’s a word with Scandinavian roots, so makes your opinion interesting.

OP posts:
lottiegarbanzo · 27/08/2018 20:16

Doll as dole? Oh! So is dolly doley for you?

To me, dolly rhymes with Polly, Molly, Holly, jolly, lolly and volley (but not with holey or roly poly!).

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 27/08/2018 20:17

I yell it in a Norwegian accent, like in Troll Hunter... it's more like 'doll'...

Mumthedogsbeensick · 27/08/2018 20:17

@AmberLangslow I'm in East Yorkshire too! Definitely pronounce it like doll.

PhilomenaButterfly · 27/08/2018 20:19

Miss Poley had a doley who was sick, sick, sick... Confused

stargirl1701 · 27/08/2018 20:21

Troll as in roll. Scotland.
