How do you pronounce ‘troll’?

AmberLangslow · 27/08/2018 18:32

I’ve always said troll with a short o, like in doll, but it seems more common to say it with a long o, like in roll.

So, which is correct? Or is it like scone and has two correct pronunciations?

Troll as in doll here :)

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/08/2018 18:33

Like doll

Redglitter · 27/08/2018 18:34

I say it so it sounds like roll

SmilingButClueless · 27/08/2018 18:34

Halfway between the two here!

lovelilies · 27/08/2018 18:34

Doll

Knittedfairies · 27/08/2018 18:35

Tr-ole. I’m not sure I’ve said the word in many years though; not since reading ‘Billy goats gruff’ as a bedtime story.

TaggieRR · 27/08/2018 18:36

Troll rhyming with pole

Bryna · 27/08/2018 18:36

They are all the same here! (Somerset)

Bumblebee2302 · 27/08/2018 18:36

I pronounce it to rhyme with role - 'trole' and 'trole-ing.'

To me, troll as in doll and trolling as in dolling just sounds wrong!

MiddleClassProblem · 27/08/2018 18:37

I say troll, doll and roll all the same.

It’s just regional thing.

Pissedoffdotcom · 27/08/2018 18:37

Tr-oooo-ll like professor quirrel in harry potter...theres a trooooll in the dungeon. Only because i got called one online once & a friend piped up with the harry potter line. Can't hear it differently now

firehousedog1 · 27/08/2018 18:37

Troll, doll, roll all sound the same to me.

AmberLangslow · 27/08/2018 18:39

Ah, it appears both are correct. I wonder if it’s like scone and has regional variations - I’m in East Yorkshire.

(And day scone to rhyme with bone.)

Although I had a migraine coming on the other day and she pronounced it meegraine when I say mygraine. That seemed to only make it worse.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/08/2018 18:40

“She” was dm. I seemed to miss that bit out...

Xiaoxiong · 27/08/2018 18:40

Middleclass and fire do Mary/merry/marry sound the same in your accent too?

For the record I say troll to rhyme with roll, and Mary/merry/marry with three different sounds. (Mary to rhyme with fairy, merry to rhyme with berry and marry to rhyme with Larry)

Did linguistics at university and interested ever since Smile

Mosret · 27/08/2018 18:41

To rhyme with hole

AmberLangslow · 27/08/2018 18:42

Funny you say that Pissedoff as we’re watching that Harry Potter film now, which prompted this discussion between DH and me.

Xiaoxiong yes, they’re all different in my accent (sw London)

I would type how they sound but I did that on a different thread and if your accent is different you would read my version of how it sounds differently so it can get lost 😂
