Blush

Yes I am that thick. There's another one Blush and he's old and doesn't play keyboards.

Oh my goodness I adore this thread.

I love the idea of webchats, both for GiaGia and MrGia, separately of course.

I do have to thank MrGia for reigniting my dormant love of physics and communicating physics 15 years after I finished my Masters. He's got me all excited about Hadrons again...

freddiemisagreatshag · 13/02/2013 08:40

It's all Jeremy Clarkson's fault. If he had made it clear which Brian Cox it was none of this would have happened

I think a lot of things can be blamed on Jeremy Clarkson.

jamaisjedors · 13/02/2013 09:53

Definitely agree with Frillymilly - get Gia on, much more interesting.

jamaisjedors · 13/02/2013 09:57

And much more MN may I say?

blonderedhead · 13/02/2013 10:30

Oh my goodness this thread is amazing. Gia should definitely have a webchat.

Freddie if it makes you feel better, a tv company hired my workplace to film a show presented by Brian Cox and I was so excited to meet him (and may have made a right old song and dance about it in the weeks leading up to said filming) and, well, as you may have guessed it was not the Prof. so I looked like a right idiot on the day wondering who the old chap wandering around was. Turned out to be a delightful man though.

BrianCoxandTheTempleofDOOM · 13/02/2013 12:31

I'm not horrible really and in fairness didn't expect his wife to turn up.

Blush

I am forever BrianCox on MN and for that reason, he shall hold a schpeshial place in my heart. I'm sure he's lovely really

soaccidentprone · 13/02/2013 13:29

if it's on a podcast I seriously suggest you listen. it was v v funnyGrin

So, which Brian Cox was it on Top Gear? I'm confused as I'm sure I have seen Professor Brian Cox on it, but from what Freddie is saying, it seems to have been the other one, hence the disappointment.

(Of course, they might both have been the Star in the Reasonably Priced Car.)

YY myspecialistsubject
I was going to say the same, he was the keyboard player in D:ream who did the song that the labour party tused for their theme tune in 1997 Things Can Only Ge Better

GrimmaTheNome · 13/02/2013 14:01

It must be a bit odd for the actor Brian Cox - for years he was the only famous one (I think he's played God) and now he's been ousted by someone else.

lljkk · 13/02/2013 14:27

I thought he became a professor because of his work to promote public understanding of science and enthusiasm about science, not Prof'd from the actual science he's contributed to from own research. Either that or it turns out to be a lot easier to become a Prof in physics than any other subject. Still an important contribution I think he's done much better at than almost anyone else in recent years.

seeker · 13/02/2013 14:36

I thought he was a proper Prof? He's published loads.

I Heqd the other BC talking very amusingly about being asked onto Question Time and he is pretty sure they booked the wrong one.....

TheSkiingGardener · 13/02/2013 14:41

Um, he's a Professor from Manchester University who works on the ATLAS experiment at CERN and publishes research pretty prolifically. In addition to that he seems to do all the stuff around communicating science, his broadcasting stuff and teaching at Manchester.

He seems fairly busy to be honest.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/02/2013 14:43

Slightly hard to tell from a very quick Google Scholar search... there's quite a few scientists of that ilk.

freddiemisagreatshag · 13/02/2013 15:02

I didn't even google Blush

OP posts:
lljkk · 13/02/2013 16:18

He's only first author on 4 pubs listed for 2009-2012. Or did I read that wrong? So badly formatted I can't see journal titles, even. Confused

Who remembers how to find impact factors for individual academics? I don't.

I don't want to diss his contributions, but I still think his professorship was awarded for the value of his public roles (and good on those who recognised the value of them).

LineRunner · 13/02/2013 16:40

Gia said he was Professorised in 2008.

TheSkiingGardener · 13/02/2013 16:52

He's part of the ATLAS group which publish isn't he? Manchester University list publications with his name on here
