Hi, I have been in temporary housing for 4 years now during that time I was allowed to bid on 4 bed houses and advised when asked I wasn’t allowed to bid on 3 bed ones, the council have now visited and said we have found a suitable property for you it is a 3 bed house 🤔 one bedroom being a box room, I have 3 sons who are not small kids now I don’t mind 2 sharing a room but someone i know has said all you will get in the box room is a single bed . Now can I refuse this as jot being suitable I think it was under section 8 so if I refused they wouldn’t help me anymore.

My daughter has a bought house where the box room doesn't have much room. One child (17 year old daughter) has to make do with it. They have just had to organise the room as best they can. Lots of houses are small these days and there are lots of ways to make best use of the space. I would give the largest room to two of the sons to share. Have the second largest room yourself and one don gets his own room. Two sharing is not considered overcrowding. You are highly unlikely to be offered a 4 bedroom house. 4 bed council houses are much rather than 3 beds and are kept for bigger families than yours. I would definitely take it.

Are you saying a person pays the same rent (no housing benefit) for a 3 bed social housing property as an identical property rented privately (no housing benefit)?

If that's directed at me then no, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that if a person in a council house is paying the full rent themselves then that housing is not being subsidised by the tax payer. The rent the tenant pays covers the cost of providing that housing. What is missing, that the private tenant would be paying, is the chunk of profit on top that would go to the LL.
