How much does your Chinese take away cost?

Just two of us tonight, we had

Special fried rice
Chicken with ginger and spring onion
Crispy chilli beef
Chicken balls

£42 from the average take away. It was very nice but if the kids were here (bottomless pit teens) we would have been pushing £100 for a bog standard take away.

Oh and I noticed on the menu it's now £1.50 for delivery within 2 miles, £1 per mile extra after that. We collect so it doesn't affect us.

We got salt and pepper chips, chicken fried rice, veg vermicelli, bbq sauce and curry sauce and 2 dr pepper and it was £21

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 08/11/2024 23:09

About £18 for two of us. Plain chow mein, tofu, seaweed. Sometimes spring rolls.

Your order is £28 in my chippy

IdaClair · 08/11/2024 23:14

Timely. Tonight’s was quarter crispy duck with pancakes, sauce, salad etc, a chicken chow mein, chicken sweet and sour, boiled rice and four spring rolls and it was £29. To feed two adults two teens but the chow mein especially was absolutely huge.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/11/2024 23:15

@Makelikeatreeandleaf if you added meat in there it would probably be on par

@leia24 I just had to check it's £18 for a 1/4 duck, £30 for 1/2

I only use the nice posh Chinese takeaway here - the one that has a reasonable proper restaurant too- I find all the other local ones are a bit greasy/ cheap nasty meat and just not great - that's in Bath - one thing we don't have isa decent Chinese takeaway 'in my opinion'

So ours tonight was £41 using Uber eats

Mixed dim sum ( not big)
King prawn chow mein
Chicken curry
Rice
Prawn crackers

North London a fantastic takeaway recommended by my Malaysian friends has been there 30 years. Prices have just gone up. Tonight: Kung Po chicken, Duck fried rice, Large mixed meat chow mein and 8 mini spring rolls and enough left for tomorrow lunch £28 everything seems to be £7-8 each. The quality is fabulous and it arrives hot. I’d take it over Luke warm Macdonalds any day.

IdaClair · 08/11/2024 23:27

I check3d how much the duck was, £10 1/4, £18 1/2 here.

ObieJoyful · 08/11/2024 23:31

About £20, but we share a main and a starter. There’s too much food otherwise.

Blimey I thought ours was good value compared to some of these!

1/4 duck is £9.65, 1/2 is £17.15.

ChaosHol1 · 09/11/2024 07:53

Ours is £22 for a meal for 2 and it does the five of us as my 11 year old just has the soup and some spring rolls. 2 soups, mini spring rolls, breast of chicken curry, shredded beef with honey chilli sauce, 2 fried rice and prawn Crackers.

SharpOpalNewt · 09/11/2024 08:00

Costs much more here, though the place we order from is Malaysian rather than Chinese. And we have to get it delivered as there are no takeaways in the village. More like £15+ a head.

HolyPeaches · 10/11/2024 02:12

Tonight 2 of us had:

1 Beef dish
1 chicken dish
Spare ribs
Salt and pepper chips
Tub of curry sauce
Prawn crackers (free)

Total: £19.30. Also collected it, so saved on delivery fee.

hattie43 · 10/11/2024 02:27

Can't believe how cheap some takeaways are . My local one , not posh , is £8-9 a mains and £3.25 for a rice . Soon adds up .

Keleshey · 10/11/2024 03:15

I usually spend about £20 for two of us.

Just added how much yours would be from my local Chinese and it would be £29.80

Copperoliverbear · 10/11/2024 03:22

I'd say that's expensive

TheEllisGreyMethod · 10/11/2024 03:29

Last weekend we had
2 salt and chilli boxes (salt and chilli ribs, chicken and chips)
2 curry sauce
crispy beef
veg chow mein
10 mini veg spring rolls
£45

month before
salt and pepper chicken
chicken fried rice
pork dumplings
curry sauce
£29

wales

That would cost about £30 here and the special fried rice would be a large (long deep container) portion and the other three meals would come with either boiled rice or a massive bag of excellent chips and you'd also get free prawn crackers.

I know I'll get accused of being a teeny tiny, but it would be enough food for 4-6 people as you've got 4 mains there plus all the sides. Even big eating DP can't eat a full main and side from the place we go to.

So no wonder it's expensive for two people as it's at least 4 meals.

Flowerrrr · 10/11/2024 06:12

DH doesn't like it, but me and DC get chips, sweet and sour chicken balls and duck chow mein for £20.

Absolutely not- it's 2 mains with 2 sides (rice and chicken balls).

Bjorkdidit · 10/11/2024 06:18

But special fried rice is a complete dish with chicken, prawns, pork, egg and veg in and chicken balls, usually with sweet and sour sauce is the same size as all the other mains so also a main dish.

Plus if we ordered that list from the takeaway we go to, you get rice or chips with all except the special fried rice.

Not every Chinese is the same, rice wouldn't be included with any of those dishes here, I know some can't comprehend people have different experiences though! Added protein in the rice or not shared as a side along with a main and some chicken balls isn't an excessive amount of food to be going on about feeding up to 6 people!

Tadpolecat · 10/11/2024 06:27

Ours comes to no more than £30 and we get a lot, as we like to have leftovers. 2 adults, 1 toddler

Crispy beef
Bbq pork Chow mein
Egg fried rice
Lemon duck
Sweet n sour chicken balls
With prawn crackers thrown in, occasionly fortune cookies too.
