(Part 2) I'm a rockstar - Ask Me Anything

Hi there,

Some of you may remember when I started an AMA thread called 'I'm a rockstar on hiatus'. I have actually been OFF hiatus for quite a while and have been very busy.

I'm considering publishing my experience in the music industry. I'm making notes about what people want to know. So do you have any burning questions?

Don't worry about it. It's not a guessing game. I'm just here to give you some insight into the music industry. It's a very strange world.

Also want to know who you are just in case you are my ex or any of his bandmates and I can avoid you like I do him 😂

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 04/10/2024 11:20

It’s probably one of the most interesting AMA threads I’ve ever read.
The questions are all great and your answers are really insightful.

I recently saw a very famous person and SO wanted to tell them how much their work had affected a whole group of people I know.

I felt foolish and didn’t want to intrude but I really really wished I had. It would have taken less than 2 minutes to tell them and I like to believe that they would have been warmed & touched by what I told them.

It’s not every day you see someone who was a part of something and have no idea of how much better their work made someone’s life when so needed.

thekrakenhasgone · 04/10/2024 13:13

If you didn't play your current instrument (or sing), what instrument would you love to play to the same standard?

Waboofoo · 04/10/2024 15:18

BlunderMifflin · 04/10/2024 00:05

I don't have a question.

Justin Hawkins. I'm probably wrong because you said you were considering a YouTube channel and he already has one I believe.

I love that you love a parking thread Grin

I was also going to suggest Justin Hawkins, he talks in depth about the music industry

Richard Osman also has a podcast/ YouTube series exploring behind the scenes of the entertainment industry called “The rest is entertainment” which is also excellent

It's always impressive when someone can play classical piano music to a high standard.

Thank you. Yeah it blows me away to hear the impact we have had on people's lives. It keeps me going when things feel hard.

I remember your first thread - thanks so much for coming back! I am really enjoying the thread, it's so interesting. Will check out the song recommendation above.

You've talked about addiction above which is interesting to me as I'm in early sobriety (though sadly not a rockstar hehe). Are there many people in your industry who successfully manage sobriety from alcohol? Have you ever found it problematic yourself (if that's not too personal to ask)?

I recently bumped into a sound engineer that used to work for us. He has since gone on to work for stadium rock bands. (We're more cult indie-rock). He used to have a dual personality from his er, vices. Hadn't seen him in years. He's sober, has children, looked really clean, happy and now has just the one personality. What a turnaround, you have no idea.

Good cos if you were my ex, I am sure it was an ambition for you but it is a daily reminder for me why I should have stayed celibate 😂

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 04/10/2024 17:04

I love watching rock bands. Would you consider yourself a rock star in the vein or say Motley Crue, Poison, LAGuns, Skid Row,Cinderella or more Bon Jovi Def Leppard style?

iloveshetlandponies · 04/10/2024 18:33

This thread is fascinating 😍

iloveshetlandponies · 04/10/2024 18:33

I reckon it's one of iron maiden

Nah OP has just said they're more cult indie rock, not stadium rock. I have no guesses now, that's not my genre lol

muffledvoice · 04/10/2024 20:46

I feel like you're from the cure Grin

Vermin · 04/10/2024 20:51

Cult indie rock with a side hustle and a disdain for labels? It’s Philip Selway and I claim my £5

I think it’s unlikely, given in the other thread they said they supported kasabian when they were starting out. 25 years too young to be the cure.

Psychoticbreak · 04/10/2024 21:19

Protex.

MollyRover · 04/10/2024 23:10

@123dogdog I suspected (hoped!!) I knew who it might be and with that nugget I'm sure. Could be confirmation bias but @SweetnSaltyPopcornPlease if so, big BIG fan of your work Grin.

TylerEndicott · 03/10/2024 12:05

Are you instantly recognisable? I'm thinking about various big/ famous bands that people would probably know the lead singer but not the guitarist and I wonder how much difference there is in their lifestyles.

If you were in a restaurant and saw a fellow musician would you need to introduce yourself or would they more than likely know who you are?

I often meet other musicians and industry people. When I introduce myself they always know who I am and know the band and our music.

I didn’t see your other thread, so apologies if someone asked this already.
What’s your favourite karaoke song?

That could give me away. But I will say, the secret to good karaoke is to not take yourself too seriously. Have fun with it and always remember, the song is for the people, not for you.

What advice would you give to someone starting out who have their own album albiet its more rock indie asking for a friend I know absolutely nothing about the music industry but I have been around a few people because of my friend. Sadly from an outside perspective I have seen a negative side to the industry with high demands, quite controlling managers and a lot of issues within bands. Also how do you feel your personal relationships have been impacted do you find you can still make time for family and friends how do you manage this?

Get out there and play. Get on social media and communicate with people. Major labels are lazy so don't court them. Think about what makes you different to other indie rock bands and use that for marketing. Follow promoters and agents on social media, they may discover the music which helps with getting bigger gigs.

What do you do when you're off hiatus? There must be a lot of free time!

ThePoshUns · 06/10/2024 12:30

How do you wind down after a gig?
Everyone must be so hyped up. Is it wild parties or back to your hotel room for a peppermint tea?

Things that normal people do that you may take for granted or find mundane. But I actually find them quite grounding.

I have my very strong suspicions. I never particularly listened to them, I was very much into the pop punk area rather than indie rock so much. But if it is who I think it is then I do know some of the songs (and can happily sing along to some of them, though tbf that’s true of 99% of songs I’ve ever listened too 😬), but they’re not someone I would say oh yes I’m going to listen to this band.
