No question but your very lucky. It's beautiful. I did some camping on Vancouver Island many years ago. Long Beach has been my favourite beach I've ever visited. We watched a wedding there. They must of had stunning photos.

I had a friend who lived in Ladysmith, we met on an internet book board and just clicked.
Their daughter was studying in England, and my friend and her DH stayed with us in Yorkshire several times. My friend was a real Anglophile and loved everything about England.

Sadly my friend died last year from a long term chronic illness, and I deeply regret never visiting her and her family, despite an open invitation from them to go and stay. It looks so beautiful, and my friend was very proud of Vancouver Island.

R.I.P. lor😔

Do you ever worry about bears?

That they might just turn up in your garden, eat your dog, anything like that?

gogomoto · 13/08/2023 22:17

I love Vancouver island! I've only been to the south part but I'm currently trying to plan a trip riding up the island by motorcycle. Any tips? Are the main roads all paved? Thinking next September, would this be good?

Do you know where Graham Wardle lives and is he single? Asking for a friend Wink

Not really, black bears won’t bother you unless with their cubs.

Eagles on the otherhand can and will pick up cats and small dogs

That sounds fun! The main highway north is paved, how far up are you planning on going?

This is fun to do up north… https://seawolfadventures.ca/grizzly-bears-of-the-wild-tour/

The Sea Wolf link looks amazing.

I have some questions.

  1. What is the relation between VI and the rest of Canada? Is there a stereotype (justified or not) of the islanders and vice versa? Politically is there a liberal or conservative lean?
  1. What is the tsunami risk really? There are signs all over the Tofino area about evacuation routes (which it seemed to me in the summer would just become a traffic jam).
  1. What is the relationship between the Island's First Nations communities and local politicians and communities like? Is it different than on the mainland? I'm thinking that as an island you're in a more delineated piece of land (it's not a small island, but still an island) than on the mainland, which might change dynamics in some ways.
  1. Is the UWC school there known about on the island and does it interact in the community in any way, or is it very much self-contained?

My dream is that when I retire I come over during the winter months and stay in a hotel on the rocks in Tofino (unless there's a better place) that has a big fire and big windows and storm watch. It must be brilliant! I'd do it now if I didn't have kids.

Hello from another Vancouver Islander, OP! (Although I'm always trying half heartedly to leave). I wonder if I know you Grin

Re: UWC I'd say it's not that well known apart from in the general vicinity of the school. My DH works at a large boarding school on VI (we probably have the largest number of boarding schools per capita of anywhere in Canada) and I wasn't aware that USC was there until a couple of years ago.

Sorry OP, not trying to hijack the thread!

Wouldlovetobeinthesun · 14/08/2023 04:16

We stayed at the Wickininnish Hotel. Is it still there? You live on a beautiful island!

Loopyloooooo · 15/08/2023 23:04

What a fab place to live! What's the wildlife like? Have you ever seen any whales or orca?

Mildoom · 28/08/2023 23:35

I’m so jealous, I visiting VI in 2008 and 2010 and absolutely loved the place 🥰

How are Tofino and Ucluelet these days? I feared they would become super commercialised, but I really hope not and that it’s retained it’s charm🙏🏻

Cathedral Grove is one of my all time favourite memories - the trees, the air, the wonderful aroma!💚

I love Vancouver Island - I hope to be able to spend time there regularly in the future. It's breath taking!
