I don't really have a question but I thought it looked beautiful on Race Across the World. Was quite taken by a lot of Canada tbh.

Ok I do have a question, how do you cope with the extream winter?

BarrelOfOtters · 12/07/2023 20:52

I loved Vancouver island….just popping in to say that. Especially tofino.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/07/2023 20:55

Do you want a British pen pal that you build a long distance friendship with and eventually invite to stay?

Vanillazebra · 12/07/2023 20:57

It rains a lot here in winter, not nearly as much as Vancouver though! It rarely snows on the southern part of the Island, when it does general chaos ensues, and the rest of Canada laughs at us. However we are quick to post our cherry blossom pics in the early spring to piss off the rest of Canada.

Only if you send copious amounts of British goodies

My understanding is that Vancouver Island is similar to UK winter...

My questions:
Do you live remotely or in a town?
Is it expensive for groceries etc due to ferry transport?
What's the culture like: hippy like Marin County, multi-billionaires, traditional Canadian Nations, settler/pioneer, tea and scones?

Tofino is wonderful. Visited Vancouver and Vancouver Island last year.

I'm not remote in a town, there is a mix of first nations, hippies and tea and scones I'd say.

The gulf islands are fully of hippies and billionaires.

Groceries are expensive every where in Canada, I tend to judge how outrageaous the prices are based on how much they charge me for a cauliflower, one Chrustmas we paid $12, normally they are $3-4 each

Do young people tend to leave the island? Or can they find employment on the island?

There are lots of jobs, accommodation costs are the issue

I've just been to North Vancouver and Downtown! How does V Island compare in your opinion to NV? I found NV very beautiful, especially the Capilano area! I wish I had had enough time to visit the island though!

Vanillazebra · 12/07/2023 21:10

It's a more chilled out vibe, there are lots of secluded and beautiful spots to stay on the Island

What's your take on nanaimo bars?

I LOVED Vancouver Island. Best air I've ever sniffed

A bit too sweet for me, but my kids love them, along with Butter Tarts

In April I went to stay with my sister who lives in Kitsilano Vancouver. It was my first time abroad. We went on the ferry to BC. We went to Whistler. To Squamish. We had a great time (even though I'm fat and she lives at the top of a steep hill 😁) but one of my highlights was going to No Frills and buying butter tarts. They are sublime...

Do you know Port Alberni? I was working out of there in 2000, on a survey ship. We were investigating the seabed, for a fibre optic cable lay.

Nice people, horrible cops!

passthesugar · 10/08/2023 03:44

Ah! Two of the loveliest people I've met are from Victoria and Port Alberni

i just watched a netflix documentary about the pandemic of abuse of drug Fentanyl in Vancouver. that is some scary stuff. every city has a drug problem, that's sadly life now. but the fentanyl has yet to hit a lot of places on the scale of vancouver and Los angeles.
my question is, does this affect your every day lives in any way, like driving to work, showing etc, or is it more contained to a specific area?

crazeekat · 10/08/2023 11:12

that's meant to say shopping, etc sorry. and i don't mean like personally as in you taking it haha does it affect you lol
there were volunteers who would go
around helping reverse the overdoses and saving lives, just normal people, who did this to
help. unpaid. what a credit to your city to have these angels. the police don't do much it seems??

I only saw the town and the port. I flew into Victoria in December 2000 and was driven down in a blizzard, there was 3 feet of snow, which I found was abnormal.

We were in and out of port every few days, as the weather was too bad to work. Very picturesque, all the forest on little rocky islands in the river.

everywhichway · 10/08/2023 20:04

Another vote for Tofino. I could live there!

Vanillazebra · 11/08/2023 17:09

I don’t visit Vancouver much, it’s on the mainland, and Vancouver Island is a 1.5 hr ferry journey away.

From what I’ve seen the opioid crisis is getting bad in certain areas, but you can’t force an addict to get help, so what can the police do except give Naxalone when required.
