I realise people do this regularly without making a thing of it. But this is my first time and wondered if it might be useful for anyone considering doing the same.

Where are you from and gone to ?
How did you get there?
Are you somewhere that traveling alone is the normal thing to do

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 03/04/2023 13:36

Who have you "not" gone with - partner? children?

ScottBakula · 03/04/2023 13:38

I should of added I holiday alone to but only in the UK, I like the freedom to do what I want when I want to but its a bit sad that I have no one to reminisce with when I get back home

Stripycatz · 03/04/2023 13:40

I've gone from a large NW city to one of our National Parks. It's beautiful here.
I came by car and I think it is a place people might travel to alone, though I've only seen groups, families and couples so far.

I normally travel with any combination of partner, teens, elderly parents, relatives or friends.

My “first” was north Mcr to the Lakes seven years ago. Now I do it all the time! Camping, hotel, cottage, even started doing the Wainwrights! Have a brilliant time.

DustyLee123 · 03/04/2023 13:42

Would you consider going abroad alone ?

worktired · 03/04/2023 13:43

Lucky you op! I've travelled abroad alone lots of times and it's one of my favourite things. Hope you have a fab time.

This has put me off travelling on my own in the past.
This is a place I have been to a few times before with family and friends. I am sharing photos with family and friends as I go along, in a 'remember this?' style.

Thanks. I think this is the first of many 😁

I don't see why not. I'd definitely consider it.

I have at least 2 alone holidays a year - came back from Switzerland at the weekend after 5 days of alone time there. Absolute bliss. Before that I did a week in Malaga.

I need some time where nobody demands anything from me.

Yes! This is it. I'm not really doing anything much, just really enjoying the peace.

Ah we are from the same area , I font drive so the lakes eoukd be a pain to get to , I tend to go to the coastal areas.
I used to go with my DH and dog , unfortunately both have died and I don't think my cat would appreciate the beach much 😹
I hope this nice weather holds out for you.

LividNC · 03/04/2023 13:53

God I love holidaying alone.

Newly single again so going to get on it.

I've done the lakes, Yorkshire, and Peaks before by train and bus with kids in tow. It's very doable, but maybe not with a cat 😺

I wonder what the chances are of several MNers all holidaying alone but in the same hotel .

You Are Never Alone With Mn
Either a great new tag line for mn or very creepy 😂
What do you think MNHQ ?

justathought69 · 03/04/2023 13:57

Does your other half also go on holidays alone ?

cariadlet · 03/04/2023 13:58

I'm on holiday at the moment. I've done London weekends on my own before (theatre and museums that dp wasn't interested in) but it's my first time abroad on my own.

I'm mostly looking forward to it but I was stuck in an immigration queue for over an hour last night (connecting flights didn't work out so I've had to do an overnight layover) and it would have been nice to have someone to share the pain.

ScottBakula · 03/04/2023 14:00

Hmm I may look in to the lakes then if its fairly easy to do by train / bus

Dryteatowel · 03/04/2023 14:00

This is interesting. It feels like people love an alone holiday where they're "escaping" temporarily from loved ones. It maybe doesn't have the same appeal if you don't have the choice? I'm widowed and DC now young adults. Friends mostly go away with their husbands/families. Although I have friends to have a long weekend with, not sure about a longer holiday. I'm happy to go and try it on my own, but I get plenty of solitude at home 😆

You have reminded me that I don't like flying on my own for this very reason. I've done it a number of times in the past and really not enjoyed it. I'm not sure I would good abroad alone after all. Maybe by train.

I am the same tho no DCs , so I am not escaping so much as exploring where I want to go that my DH wasn't interested in when he was alive.

I’m just about to go travelling by train, half the time by myself. I’ll let you know how it goes! I’m mainly concerned about getting my luggage upstairs, and about if anything goes wrong and I get a stuck mid journey!
