I realise people do this regularly without making a thing of it. But this is my first time and wondered if it might be useful for anyone considering doing the same.

This is interesting. It feels like people love an alone holiday where they're "escaping" temporarily from loved ones. It maybe doesn't have the same appeal if you don't have the choice? I'm widowed and DC now young adults. Friends mostly go away with their husbands/families. Although I have friends to have a long weekend with, not sure about a longer holiday. I'm happy to go and try it on my own, but I get plenty of solitude at home 😆

A holiday is about something different isn't it. My life is crazy busy at the moment. I saw this opportunity and grabbed at it. It was a good decision.
I'm sure there have been chances for me to holiday alone in the past, but I've not needed the break as much so have passed on the opportunity.
When I lived alone I did a lot of group volunteering holidays. Different needs back then I suppose.

I am the same tho no DCs , so I am not escaping so much as exploring where I want to go that my DH wasn't interested in when he was alive.

Yes, I've started to do this too. We got on Ok 😆 but we were quite different too, so it's actually quite nice to have a chance to do things he wouldn't have wanted. I haven't been back to any places we shared.

Even then coming home and having no one to tell about the trip is hard. We all know DC/colleagues/friends don't really want to hear it.

I had better get back to work otherwise I am going to be permanently on holiday !

I hope you have a good time @Stripycatz

I agree , having nobody to share it with is crap

I've been going on holiday on my own for 20 years now - it's part of my job, I work for a well known review site. I also do it outside of work. I have at least two holidays abroad every year on my own...I've travelled all over the world. I was in Sharm-el-Sheik, on my own, a week after the bombings, felt totally safe. Never had a moments trouble in those 20 years.

That sounds amazing!

This is on my list. I'm single and childless but holiday won't friends or family.

I think it's good to spend time alone with your thoughts.

I would love to try it. I thought I may get nervous though and bored! I love my own company and reading, museums and history. Husband just wants a beach so I may try it one day. Any recommendations?

Rayn22 · 03/04/2023 18:50

What has been the best bit?

Just do it! I love my own company too. I get very drained by other people, even the ones I love. I've hardly talked with anyone today, it's been great!
I'll probably come back here with my OH, he'd love it. But we'd have a different kind of holiday.

The doing nothing! And all my meals are included, from a quite limited menu, so I haven't had to cook or make any decisions about what/where/when to eat. Bliss

It really is. I hope you get to do it.
