Is it like the programme "Benidorm" - like Skegness or Blackpool but with hot weather?

Mejillones · 27/12/2021 19:48

Not quite Skegness or Blackpool.
However I do think the attraction is that somethings are very familiar.
It's very good value for money and the weather is almost guaranteed.

What are property prices like compared to the uk?

In this area the property prices are mid to high when you compare with other areas on the Costa Blanca.
Here you can probably get a reasonable 2 bed apartment for €175k
However further south they seem a lot cheaper.

Is it easy to meet locals? Or do expats tend to socialize amongst themselves?

ballsdeep · 27/12/2021 20:20

@Itsmeandhim

Not to derail the thread. *@DobbyTheHouseElk* I saw sticky Vicky about 2001. This was about 3am and she was getting out of a very very big car. All I remember is that she had the most gorgeous pair of green shoes on. She wasn't very tall and had a driver and bodyguard. Went to watch the show and she was very entertaining and I think or hope a lot was slight of hand. Razor blades, coke bottle tops and a long string of lights came out of her foof foo.
When I saw her she squatted, tapped her head, and a light bulb, which was hanging out of her vagina, turned on!!!! I hope it wasn't a high voltage!
Mejillones · 27/12/2021 20:49

Yes it's been quite difficult to meet anyone due to the pandemic.
We had just started to interact more when we had a total lockdown then the continued curfews.

According to Wikipedia, Sticky Vicky stopped working in 2015. She was 72 when she retired. Yikes. I guess it’s slight of hand?!

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 27/12/2021 21:03

I saw sticky Vicky 10 years ago. I’m still baffled.

trumpisagit · 27/12/2021 21:06

We were suprised how much we liked Benidorm (or the little bit of Old Town we saw) this October half term.
It was more Spanish than we expected and there were lots of older Spanish tourists at our hotel.
Do you think the lack of British tourists has changed Benidorm for the better?

Mejillones · 27/12/2021 21:08

Not sure which places in Benidorm you lot are visiting???
Looks like everyone's favourite local is Vicky😉

Are you registered as living in any UK address for tax/health/voting purposes?

TheVolturi · 27/12/2021 21:12

Get yourself the Duolingo app for learning Spanish it's so easy op. Then try to speak it as much as possible.

I can’t remember where I saw her. I saw Roy chubby brown too. Fucking danced with him Blush
Mejillones · 27/12/2021 21:15

Currently we do not have a UK address.

"My DH does a sport that is a mixture of English and Spanish"

Does your husband play padel ?

bert3400 · 27/12/2021 21:30

"Yes the plan is eventually to move on.
But I have settled here very well, so it might be a while.
I like Altea and further north in the area of Ondara and Denia"

Hi OP, I live in Javea ...if you want any advice on the areas, give me a shout

Mejillones · 27/12/2021 22:13

Trumpsagit, the Old Town, Poniente and La Cala are favourites of the Spanish.
The nicer restaurants in my opinion are mostly in that area as well.
Its definitely been less raucous.
I think British coming over for a long weekend maybe on hold for a long while and that will change the resort.

Mejillones · 27/12/2021 22:21

A wave to you bert3400.
Our car went into a garage up there, so i have visited Javea a few times. Lovely place.
We have been out and about, we visit Calpe frequently along with Moraira and we have had a couple of trips up to Oliva in the summer.
DH does not play Padel.

Is it exactly like 'bargain loving brits in the sun?'

I watch that sometimes for comic value. A certain 'type' of person gravitates towards Benidorm according to this programme. Would you agree thats true?

Mejillones · 27/12/2021 22:36

Is it exactly like 'bargain loving brits in the sun?'

Only if you saw Mary dancing with Roy Chubby Brown.😁

OP posts:
Mejillones · 27/12/2021 22:54

To be honest I think that programme was a little bit orchestrated and just a small snapshot.
It's quite a diverse place, but then it wouldn't have been "Bargain Brits" if showed anything more.
Currently you really would struggle to live here if you haven't got the right paperwork with everything up to date.

Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 27/12/2021 23:32

Just to interrupt the stuff about the TV program... please could you say how easy it is to make local friends? I would love to work in Spain + do speak Spanish but I worry that I would get stuck in an expat enclave.

Maireas · 28/12/2021 09:19

How do you occupy yourselves on a day to day basis, it must be very seasonal?

Pollypocket2021 · 28/12/2021 23:12

Is it true that the Pakistani shop keepers over charge you if they think you’re british/Irish? They technically steal your money because they think you’re rich. Charging €3 for a small bottle of water that costs 25 cents in the supermarket🤦‍♀️
namechangeanonymous · 20/02/2022 19:27

Didn't Vickys daughter take over?
Now darling we're going to teach you the family business, let's start with this dice and work up.
