I converted to Judaism AMA

I converted to Liberal Judaism last year.

I occasionally encounter some religious AMA but they are mostly centred on Christianity (understandably because it is the majority religion in the UK). But thought this might be interesting. My husband is Jewish but is completely irreligious.

Can I just say that this has taken a ridiculous turn. It would be like a convert to the CoE being asked whether she believes in casting out demons from gay people, as is done by some Anglican churches in Nigeria. And then when everyone says that this isn't a part of CofE practice, say you have looked online and found an example in Nigeria, and ask OP whether she would do this to her own child.

@AgeLikeWine that's a very disrespectful way to ask that question. For what it's worth if I have sons then yes I will give them a bris at 8 days old. Every male in my family and my dhs have had it and none have been traumatised by it. It will be performed by a medically trained doctor. I believe a parent has the right to make medical and religious decisions for their child.

And yes the blood sucking thing does exist in some very small sects but it's not practiced amongst mainstream Jews and pretty much all of them would be abhorred by it. As said most bris are now carried out my medically trained specialists not just some random rabbi.

Really interesting OP. I understand why you converted. I think if you are raised RC there are so many unanswered questions ‘ the mysteries’. I ended up on a Jewish site s and they have a language and dialogue rooted in something I could relate to, to make sense of these things. It also struck me at a very young age that if Jesus was Jewish and we look to him are we not using him as an intercessionary figure and that the goal is Judaism?

I also feel more and more that we started with Jewish roots and that something severed us from the source and that Christianity has tried to remedy this but can’t - so all roads, for me, consistently lead back to Judaism. I don’t think I could convert but I feel it is possible to embrace the roots within oneself.

OP when you say your husband looks Jewish, do you mean he still dresses orthodox (long coat, hat, ringlets) even though he doesn't believe?

jasminoide · 22/05/2021 09:08

Also as a liberal/reform woman is there any dress code for you?
