I married a vampire

Yep...you read that right. My husband is a vampire...in that he's allergic to garlic.

From what I've heard this is very unusual and many people say they don't know if they could live without garlic. One colleague of mine even said it would be a deal breaker for her.

Here to ask any questions re. cooking, eating out, what I miss/don't miss about garlic, my DH's garlic allergy in general and any other questions you might have.

Ask away!

Hmm
pumpkinpie01 · 07/09/2020 21:25

Erm lots of people have lots of food allergies I'm not sure what you think folk would like to know 🤔

KeepSmiling89 · 07/09/2020 21:33

@pumpkinpie01 it's because it's such a common ingredient in lots of foods but very rarely listed as an 'allergen' in ingredient lists or menus etc compared to eggs, milk, nuts, shellfish and the like

@Butterer I've heard about that as they're part of the same family of foods. We mostly cook from scratch...lucky enough to not have an issue with onions though.

I have vampire questions ready and am feeling a bit disappointed.

I went off garlic in a big way when I was pregnant one time and checked the ingredients of pretty much everything I ate to make sure there was none in it! What happens if he eats garlic?

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 07/09/2020 21:45

So guessing from your post you have given up garlic too for the sake of your husband?

So, do you ever eat it, at all? Eg when you go out for weekend away without him etc?

Which food is it commonly found in?

Is his allergy airborne?

SleepingStandingUp · 07/09/2020 21:48

Can you see his reflection in a mirror? Does he have to be invited into other people's home? Can he fly?

Do you ever manage to eat out?

userxx · 07/09/2020 21:48

🤣🤣. Me too. I'd love it if he slept upside down.

NiceGerbil · 07/09/2020 21:49

I thought it was going to be one of those people who actually believe they are one.

Shame.

OhCaptain · 07/09/2020 21:51

Do you want people to ask you about your husband’s food allergies? Confused

NiceGerbil · 07/09/2020 21:51

Out of interest how does this manifest, is it EpiPen level?

I have an interesting time after eating onions but I like them so do it anyway. It's s bit of family joke. They know how to open the windows Grin

louise4745 · 07/09/2020 21:52

My husband is allergic to prawns. I still eat them 😂😂

gettingfedupagain · 07/09/2020 21:55

Maybe he's a dog? Alliums (garlic, onions, leeks) are toxic to dogs

thelegohooverer · 07/09/2020 21:55

My cousin is allergic to garlic. Once, when we were in a restaurant she had a reaction because the staff didn’t believe that it was a real thing. It was very frightening

yawnsvillex · 07/09/2020 21:59

My old boss was allergic to garlic. He was a nightmare to feed. Everything seemed to come with a smidgen of garlic!

Poor guy thou ... it was proper anaphylactic

mvmvmvmv · 07/09/2020 22:01

From the title, I thought you married someone with a fetish for biting you and drinking blood.

How disappointing Blush

MerchantOfVenom · 07/09/2020 22:03

I have a vegan friend who’s coeliac and allergic to garlic and onions, and doesn’t cook with oil. I think sugar’s pretty much out, too.

She’s published a cookbook and cooks the most amazing food.

With all due respect OP, I think her AMA would be a little more interesting! Wink

Op... so disappointed! Is he scared of daylight too?

AnonymousShrew · 07/09/2020 22:09

Well this is disappointing. I wanted to ask if he preferred a coffin or hanging upside down. Or if he sparkles like the annoying Twilight vampires.

My dad doesn't like garlic either. As far as I'm aware he isn't a vampire (must check his reflection tough)

CatSmith · 07/09/2020 22:09

Is your DH’s name Darren by any chance?

Because I once dated a man who decided to tell me about 6 months into our relationship that he was allergic to garlic. I never told him he’d had garlic in pretty much every meal I’d cooked over those 6 months. I continued to cook with garlic.

I wasn’t going to eat bland food to pander to his childish whim. No garlic would be a dealbreaker for me, I use lots of garlic.

MsWonderful · 07/09/2020 22:13

It’s interesting that it can only be fairly recently that garlic has become so prevalent in our diets across the board in the U.K., to the point where it’s difficult to avoid. I’m sure it wouldn’t have been as difficult 25-30 years ago.
