I married a vampire

Yep...you read that right. My husband is a vampire...in that he's allergic to garlic.

From what I've heard this is very unusual and many people say they don't know if they could live without garlic. One colleague of mine even said it would be a deal breaker for her.

Here to ask any questions re. cooking, eating out, what I miss/don't miss about garlic, my DH's garlic allergy in general and any other questions you might have.

Ask away!

Wildly high level of click bait

I have two family members (not related) allergic to garlic. One whose face I have seen swell up due to it, the other whose wife won't eat it as he can smell it and it makes him feel queasy. I don't think it's that rare...

FizzyPink · 07/09/2020 22:26

My DP is allergic to peanuts. I love Thai food so much, not sharing a pad Thai or chicken satay with him was almost a deal breaker Blush

This is the most disappointing thread. Ever.

My MIL is allergic to garlic. It's really quite boring in that she just can't eat anything with garlic in it and that's the end of the story really.

MagMell · 07/09/2020 22:30

I married a werewolf myself.

daisiesflower · 07/09/2020 22:35

I don't like garlic so I tend to avoid it, I'll eat it in small amounts mixed into foods but don't use it when I cook. Can't say it's had a huge effect on my life

iMatter · 07/09/2020 22:39

My ds2 can't digest onion or leeks.

I'm not great with them either but do enjoy them (but pay for it later)

Wow! Disappeared to watch an episode of the X-Files and came back to so many comments...I'll do my best to answer...

  1. Reactions vary depending if he eats it or inhales it...he's vomitted, had a REALLY bad migraine and (scariest of all) had a fit/seizure (Got a call from his boss when I was at work saying what happened...a jar containing garlic smashed in the stock room and he inhaled it). No epi-pen or anything.
  1. Yep I gave it up. It apparently stays in your system for up to 3 days and he could smell it through my skin pores sometimes.
  1. Eating out is tricky but we do manage (we don't eat out a lot usually anyway though). Italian and Indian restaurants are always a no-go.

@CatSmith no, it's Robert. Our food is never bland. We use salt, pepper, stock cubes, smoked paprika, parsley, chilli powder and flakes, soy sauce, Worcester sauce, hoisin sauce, some teriyaki sauces...and many more. There are so many ways to flavour food without garlic.

@thelegohooverer
That's horrible. We had a bad experience on holiday when a waiter didn't let us know that something in the buffet contained garlic (we disclosed his allergy to the hotel on arrival) DH could smell it as soon as he walked past it. Turns out it did contain garlic and the waiter just argued with us saying that it wouldn't harm him. Just didn't seem to understand the severity of food allergies at all!

When I was a teenager, I made a very poor life decision and ‘dated’ (for about 10 days) someone who slept in a coffin. I thought this thread was going to be about someone similar to this. Someone in that lifestyle. I feel as disappointed as when everyone was raving about a hit vampire series called Twilight and I realised it was 3 books about a disco ball.

DH’s friend is allergic to garlic, onions and leeks. It’s a minor inconvenience and made slightly more annoying because he doesn’t do spice so I can’t compensate for the onions with spice. We have his friend over sometimes for dinner, which is why it’s a minor inconvenience. I don’t actually think it’s that rare though.

In pre packaged foods, he can eat it if it's at least half way down on the list of ingredients or lower...same with me.

Sorry to everyone who hoped for something a bit more juicy and supernatural...

  1. No fetish for blood but he does like kissing and lightly nibbling my neck (sorry if TMI)
  2. No sleeping upside down...That I'm aware of...unless he does then gets back into bed for when I get up for work.
  3. He can see his reflection in mirrors but doesn't always like what he sees (his words not mine!)
  4. No sparkling like Twilight vampires except after he's been busy in the garden and is glistening with sweat (again sorry if TMI)
  5. He wouldn't walk into someone's house unless he was invited anyway...but doesn't everyone follow this rule?

@LizB62A just mentioned this to him...He doesn't want a garlicky taste...doesn't even like the smell or taste of it.

So you’re now revealing that he can actually eat garlic, just not much of it? Is he allergic to it or does he just not really like it?

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 09/09/2020 06:41

Cook him some blood with garlicGrin

HolyForkinShirt · 09/09/2020 06:45

What a disappointing thread

KeepSmiling89 · 09/09/2020 07:59

MsWonderful he's been building up a tolerance over the years so he can eat more things he likes.
