I'm another red head with blue eyes. I have very pale skin but come out in freckles too. I've had one general anaesthetic that I responded very badly to, I stopped breathing for a while. I also need huge amounts of local anaesthetic for dental work, I also bruise magnificently. My parents aren't red heads but 3 out of 4 of their kids are and we all have different eye colours too.

My 10 year old DD has red hair too but much darker than mine, I think it'll go brown as she gets older.

The people who dye their hair red and then call themselves redheads annoy me too! Such bollocks.

I wonder if the not aging thing is because we have to take proper care of our skin in the sun etc or a genetic quirk. I don't have any lines yet and all the other redhead women I know have similarly 'young' skin in comparison to their peers.

I used to work with a Pakistani who's niece, brothers, uncles and assorted cousins had red hair ( not mixed race)

That may be due to a genetic condition called leucism.

There are different forms of it and it causes some genes for colouring to 'misfire'.

Some leucisitics look like albinos but have coloured eyes (not pink), some look 'piebald', like they have vitiligo (but the patches don't grow bigger) and some have an all over lighter colouring than the rest of their family.

In Asian people, it can cause red hair, although there have been noted examples of red haired people in Asia.

Thank you ginger and ican.

Why does it annoy you, that people dye their hair and call themselves red heads?

SemperIdem · 15/07/2018 22:59

I’m very dark haired (like my dad) but have inherited my mum’s ginger skin...I’m a massive shade seeker. I think it is sun exposure that really ruins ones face. More so than drinking or smoking.

Why does it annoy you, that people dye their hair and call themselves red heads?

Because they're not red heads.

Weedsnseeds1 · 16/07/2018 07:59

gingernaut in this family, the redheads' skin was the same colour as their black haired relatives. They all had brown eyes. Their hair was a sort of dark copper, like a red setter dog.
Very eye catching combination. The neice was cooed over and marvelled at by Asian women, who wanted the same hair colour!

Gingernaut · 16/07/2018 08:15

They may have had Pathan heritage.

Pathans are people from the Afghan-Pakistani border and are noted for their red hair.

Note: if Googling, type "-porn". There's some seriously sick stuff out there....Sad

Weedsnseeds1 · 16/07/2018 09:02

Possibly, gingernaut , although this family were darker skinned.
I've just remembered Boris Becker and Angela Emarkova's child. Some strong ginger genes at work there!

SemperIdem · 16/07/2018 09:11

Gingernaut

Much like the majority of adult blondes aren’t naturally so. Seems an odd thing to get annoyed about.

We've had the piss ripped out of us, we've been cat called, bullied and laughed at.

Then somone comes along with dyed hair and claims 'red head-dom' until the next fashionable colour comes along.

Also, dyed red hair never looks natural.

Givemeallyourcucumber · 16/07/2018 10:02

Also another red head here. I was bullied all throughout secondary school. So I ended up having my hair.Sad

I am turning 30 next month and I can officially say I have the best hair in the world! I love it.
I have lovely natural highlights and people often complement me on it.
I am also very freckly and moley all year round. In the summer I look like one massive freckle!

Go red heads!

Givemeallyourcucumber · 16/07/2018 10:02

*hating my hair!

fluffiphlox · 16/07/2018 13:40

I’ve previously posted on this thread. I won’t see my fifties again and have tried to prolong the redness of my hair. I was never bullied for my hair colour. When did that start happening?

Blackbirdblue30 · 16/07/2018 23:04

I was the only redhead in my primary school class, but I heard all the redheads then and onwards get teased about it. It persisted into my adulthood as a 'go-to' insult from strangers.
I recently talked to a neighbour's little girl about 8 and she said the kids in school call her 'carrot top'. I said that was one I got too and told her I turned out better looking than the lot of them knocked together, which did cheer her up, but it's not right that someone's colouring is used as an insult and that that's still tolerated re redhead people.

In primary school, it was mainly 'people like us', not particularly ethnically diverse and there were plenty of red heads.

In secondary school, the mix was more ethnically diverse and I stood out like a sore thumb.

There were roughly three or four red heads in the entire year of nearly 250 girls.

It was isolating when the only other girl from my primary school (not red head) was in an entirely different class.

Myfanwyprice · 17/07/2018 12:56

Another red head here, was teased terribly as a child and so dyed my hair a lot! When my beautiful red haired children were born I decided to show them that I was proud of it and stopped dying it, now really regret the time and money spent being blonde as adore the colour!

Interesting to read about the pain relief, during both my labours, they couldn’t get the epidural to take effect. I tore quite badly with ds, and they had to stitch me twice as the skin kept ripping.

When I had my dd, I had an episiotomy and so only needed a few stitches, but the same problem with the skin not taking the stitches, they said it is really common with redheads.
