Just joining in :)

OP posts:
CheekyRedhead · 14/07/2018 16:02

I'm red hair blue eyes and my hair is starting to lighten. I'm getting blonde hairs instead of the usual grey. Makes me look Sun lightened.

Gingernaut · 14/07/2018 17:06

Yup. Blue eyes here.

Unicorn rare, apparently.

SemperIdem · 14/07/2018 17:07

I didn’t realise the red hair and blue eyes was rare, within my family it is the only red hair and eye combo. Lots of dark haired green eyes for the rest.

I was about 7 before I realised that most people have brown eyes, not blue or green!

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 14/07/2018 17:18

Another redhead here - with blue eyes!

My question is a bit unusual. Has anyone told you that you smell unusual? I've been told I do - not a bad smell, just different - and I think it's a red hair thing. Possibly a musky scent and strangely attractive to some, I'm told!

CarcerDun · 14/07/2018 17:21

DS is a ginger blonde redhead, he had a GA and was very groggy coming out of it, took a lot longer than expected to be his normal self again. There are no other redheads in our family so he's a bit unique!

Ollivander84 · 14/07/2018 17:25

Redhead here. I need shit loads of local anaesthetic. Had two GA, pinged awake after both (last one was 5hrs), wired so couldn't sleep all night and was demanding food an hour after Blush

Ollivander84 · 14/07/2018 17:27

And yes to higher dose of other stuff. I was on
Full dose paracetamol
Full dose naproxen
5mg x 2 diazepam
60mg x 4 dihydrocodeine
Oramorph

And still at work 😂😂😂 and in pain

This idea of red hair and blue eyes being a rare combination is repeated in style&beauty-type articles all over the internet, but is apparently untrue.

It seems that people have thought that because red hair is rare, and blue eyes are rare, (the world over, as a lot of ethnicities much more commonly have brown eyes) that you can just decide that that makes the two together the rarest of the rare. I've read other articles by scientists who explain why red hair and blue eyes are actually much more likely to occur together than red hair and brown eyes.

I have dark red or auburn hair and brown eyes that are somehow the same colour as each other. Every other redhead I've known has had blue eyes.

Apileofballyhoo · 14/07/2018 17:38

It seems to be very difficult to get a definitive answer to the red hair and blue eyes versus red hair and brown eyes question through googling - the red hair and blue eyes being the most rare combination seems to be coming from one source that all the other sources are quoting. It seems to be based on a statistical thing where red hair is very rare based on world population, and blue eyes are quite rare based on world population, so, based on world population, having both is extremely rare.

But, red haired people tend to be in populations where light coloured eyes are more common, and in these populations red hair and blue eyes are not rare. I saw an analogy on Quora - tall people who speak Serbo-Croat are very rare in terms of world population, but not very rare in Croatia.

Wikipedia (I understand can't always be trusted) suggests red haired people usually have light coloured eyes and gives a scientific article as a reference - I didn't read it as it was behind a paywall.

It has definitely been my experience that red hair and brown eyes is unusual, but obviously that's just my experience.

There is also a link on Quora to a Facebook survey. Blue seem to be the most common.

And in response to a PP: I am incredibly ticklish! Nobody has tickled me for years, but it used to utterly incapacitate me when I was a kid, to the great amusement of my dad.

ShackUp · 14/07/2018 17:40

I'm a (strawberry blonde) redhead and I have an incredibly high pain threshold. I also have sensory issues. Do you?

flourella · 14/07/2018 17:40

Exactly, Apileofballyhoo, many of those articles are largely copy and paste jobs. I don't know what the truth really is, but red hair and blue eyes isn't rare in these parts.

ShackUp · 14/07/2018 17:43

Also: make up! I tint my eyebrows and always wear mascara otherwise I look like a dead person. I also have to wear lippy (dead person again). Do you do this?

Theaxopa · 14/07/2018 17:52

Another red head, with brown eyes. I can back up that I'm the only brown-eyed red head I've ever known, so the red hair, blue eye combo being rare seems odd to me too. I'm very freckled, but have a bit of a glow from the sunshine. I use factor 50 most of the time. I too have a ridiculous pain threshold, but I'm lucky enough not to have needed a GA ever. To the PP who commented on vitamin D, no need to worry, it's a red head superpower - we make our own! Evolution has made it easier for us to stay out of the sun!

Cistersaredoingitforthemselves · 14/07/2018 19:02

50 yr old red head with brown eyes

Well not so red anymore .... apparently I am now blonde which surprises me as I still consider myself a ginger. I got teased mercilessly as a child 'carrot top' and then as I got older 'ginger minge' Confused

Dyed my hair black from the age of 16 but it never looked nice for long as the fucking ginger would start to creep through....

Got to late 30s and decided to go back to my natural colour which wasn't how I remember it!

Apileofballyhoo · 14/07/2018 19:06

I have auburn hair now but was more strawberry blonde when I was young. I have quite dark hazel eyes - more brown than green. I've only ever met one person with red hair and brownish eyes - I can't remember if he was quite hazel or quite brown. Plenty of red haired blue eyed people though. I have a feeling my red haired uncle might have had hazel eyes too.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 14/07/2018 19:18

Ginge here too. Yes ShackUp, I pretty much rock the living corpse look without make up. Also dye my eyebrows and lashes darker otherwise I don't even have a face when not wearing make up!

ReginaOcarina · 14/07/2018 19:34

Redhead and brown eyes here! Have only ever met other redheads with blue eyes too! Just to reassure pp I have had a few GAs and it has never had any sort of adverse affects. I do however have a very high tolerance to painkillers and they don't really tend to work very well. Hope your little ones op goes well! Flowers

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 14/07/2018 19:36

@ReginaOcarina my dh and boys are all red hair brown eyes!

Snappedandfarted2018 · 14/07/2018 19:42

My dh is red head brown eyes. Ds2 is a red head with the bluest eyes only 2% of the worlds population has this genetic makeup.

ICanOnlyLaugh · 14/07/2018 19:49

apparently old (mid)wives tale is that red heads bleed!

@elpheba this seems to be a common one in the medical profession, I’ve had surgery a few times and it’s always been mentioned!

I also haemorrhaged seriously both times I gave birth so the theory was supported in my case!

Hortonlovesahoo · 14/07/2018 19:51

Anothe redhead too.

I have had a lot of issues with GA/ sedation. I’m either given not enough or way too much and it’s a fine line. When I was a child, they removed a tooth without sufficient sedation and I ended up passing out and recently they had to give me a double dose to do a root canal and I was numb for hours.

Hortonlovesahoo · 14/07/2018 19:52

Forgot to add: also a very easy bleeder. Lost a lot of blood giving birth (2.5 litres) and with my second, had to have an emergency d&c as I was losing blood too quickly

Gingernaut · 14/07/2018 20:53

Also: make up! I tint my eyebrows and always wear mascara otherwise I look like a dead person. I also have to wear lippy (dead person again). Do you do this?

I tint my eyebrows and eyelashes, otherwise no one would see them.

GrumpyBagFace · 14/07/2018 23:19

Red head, blue eyes here.

I've had several GAs and two spinal blocks. All of which have worn off before the end of surgery. I have an incredibly high pain threshold but not high enough to tolerate the sensation of being stitched up after major abdominal surgery!
