Just to point out something - Leprechauns are in fact a protected species. I shit you not. There was a man in Louth who had money and decided to put it into Leprechaun hunting. He put some money under rocks, charged people a fee to come and hunt a leprechaun and he made massive amounts out of it. He now runs a hunt every year and has a museum dedicated to them. He went to the EU officials and got them noted as a protected species so if you do find one, be mindful not to hurt it ;)

All a true story by the way. I will see if I can find a youtube video on it. I have done the tour of the museum and he told us himself he had done it and showed us the proof!

I always think poor Peig gets bad press.
What a life she had, the poor woman, compared to our lives.
A sh*t life and then to be absolutely hated by a generation, vilified at every opportunity.
Am I the only apologist for Peig ever ????
Smile

SongsOfInnocence · 09/07/2018 09:36

Who or what is Peig? (As you can probably tell, I’m not Irish, or British for that matter, just genuinely —ignorant— interested)

Lonesurvivor · 09/07/2018 09:37

Peig actually had a really interesting life and it's the sort of book I'd enjoy reading now as an adult.
But as a 16 year old, forced to read it through Irish which I'd learned to detest after been badly taught it 5 days a week for 13 years with no choice, I absolutely hated Peig, just seeing her face on the cover of that book sent me into a rage.

SongsOfInnocence · 09/07/2018 09:37

... aaand strikethrough fail Blush

notWORKzilla · 09/07/2018 09:51

SongsOfInnocence Peig was a lady that had a tough life and her life story, told through the Irish language (which was her first language) was a school book on the curriculum.
There is more about her here

notWORKzilla · 09/07/2018 09:55

I should add that her image has become a stereotype in Ireland (and I don't mean that in a rude way) for an old Irish woman of a certain era.

This is her book & picture

BaronessBlonde · 09/07/2018 11:27

I loathed Peig ....until I spent a month in the Gaeltacht actually seeing the Blaskets, walking the places that she described and seeing where she lived.
After which, I kinda got her life...such a harsh time.
Just like you loan, as an adult, I admire her. But as a 16year old, a lot of it washed over me.

Songs adding to what notWORK says, it's a text that every child for generations had to read.
A bit like, mutual bonding over dissecting King Lear.
We were all traumatised by the language she used (i.e. not basic level Irish) Grin
It's basically survivors' black humour.

JaneJeffer · 09/07/2018 11:55

Peig is mis lit as Gaeilge.

MikeWyzowski · 09/07/2018 11:57
