Best washer dryers to buy in 2022: top models from Bosch, Samsung, Hoover and more

Short on space? These two-in-one washer dryers can clean and dry your clothes in one convenient, easy-to-use appliance.

Best Washer Dryer

Drying clothes, particularly in the winter months, can be quite the challenge. Whilst quick and convenient, not everyone has the space to accommodate a stand-alone washing machine and tumble dryer in their homes.

It’s fair to say that a combined washer dryer won’t quite match the capacity and performance of an individual washing machine and dryer. However, washer dryers offer significant flexibility for those who want to dry small quantities of clothes, towels or bed linen, without causing condensation from air dryers or clothes hung on radiators around the home.

Whether it’s a high-capacity washer dryer, a super-efficient machine or even a quiet option that won't wake up your neighbours on a Sunday morning, we’ve researched the best washer dryers to help you tackle that never-ending laundry pile.

Here are the best washer dryers you can buy in 2022.

1. Best overall washer dryer: AEG OkoMix Technology L8WEC166C 10Kg / 6Kg Washer Dryer - White

AEG OkoMix Technology L8WEC166C 10Kg / 6Kg Washer Dryer - White

Price: £1,249 | Buy now from AO.com

I love our washer dryer! It's an AEG and it's truly superb - wouldn't go back to having a separate dryer taking up space!”  (Brand recommended by Mumsnet user MobLife)

I have a five-year-old AEG washer/dryer. I believe it was 2nd best choice on Which? at the time, can't fault it, and would buy the same again.” (Brand recommended by Mumsnetter NanTheWiser

With a large drum capacity of 10kg, the AEG OKOMix washer dryer is ideal for larger households, offering the space to accommodate wash loads of up to six family members.

Using OKOMix technology, this washer dryer can pre-mix your detergent and softener with water prior to the cycle starting, meaning by the time it makes contact with your clothes, it’s already started to dissolve and can get straight to the task of cleaning.

The built-in wool programme can take care of your delicate fabrics by using lower temperatures and gentle movements. Certified by Woolmark Blue, it’s a

safe option to clean even hand wash only items. We also love the easy iron programme, which reduces the need for ironing, saving precious time you can allocate to other, far more enjoyable tasks.

For those seeking to be more energy efficient, there's a 30-degree ECOwash programme which, despite using 60% less energy and water, can still get your clothes squeaky clean and dry in less than an hour.

This innovative machine also has the ability to automatically find the right wash and dry cycle for your clothes, adjusting the temperature, motion and cycle length based on the size of the load to save water, energy and time.

Indesit 7kg Wash 5kg Dry 1400rpm Freestanding Washer Dryer

Price: £384 | Buy now from Amazon

“I've got an Indesit washer dryer and like it for what I use it for. It's not great if you want to completely dry stuff but I tend to start stuff off in the dryer and then move to the airer. This cuts the drying time down. I only dry things completely in an emergency and that's not frequent enough to warrant a separate dryer.” (Recommended by Mumsnetter Bluebelltulip)

If you’re looking to keep costs down or replace a broken washer dryer on a budget, Indesit is a trusted brand that comes without the eye-watering price tag. It also comes with a 10-year parts guarantee, which in the current climate, is great for peace of mind.

With a 7kg wash capacity and 5kg drying capacity in one combined machine, it’s spacious enough to accommodate the majority of families’ laundry needs, without taking up precious space in your kitchen.

Using the Eco Time mode, this washer dryer can calculate exactly the right amount of water required based on the size of your load, reducing water waste and minimising drying times. You can also pick between Hanger, Iron and Cupboard Dry, where the dryer will automatically stop when the desired level of dryness is reached.

We love the addition of an Express Wash & Dry mode for smaller loads (up to 0.5kg), which can get clothes clean and dry in just 45 minutes - ideal for a last-minute wash of your outfit for your well-earned night out.

6. Best fast spin washer dryer: John Lewis JLWD1614 Freestanding Washer Dryer

John Lewis JLWD1614 Freestanding Washer Dryer

Price: £849 | Buy now from John Lewis

“I got the expensive John Lewis one. It was about £800 though. It has a massive drum which I have to say I love, having previously had a 7kg one. This means I wash less frequently. The tumble dry side is also good, but unlike most people, I tend to just use it for towels.”  (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Doodlepoodle1)

“We have one because we literally do not have space anywhere for two appliances. Ours is a John Lewis and it's honestly been brilliant. Couldn't be without it now. You do need to take out a few washed things in order to dry successfully, but to me, that's a small sacrifice.” (Recommended by Mumsnetter SeraphinaDombegh

A John Lewis own-brand washer dryer, this machine comes well rated amongst both Mumsnetters and wider consumer reviews, maintaining its status as a Which best buy choice since its launch back in 2018.

How do washer dryers work?

For convenience and the best of both worlds, washer dryers allow the option to wash and dry clothes in one machine, selecting from a wash-only cycle, dry-only cycle, or combined wash and dry programme.

When should I consider a washer dryer?

Washer dryers are ideal for those that are limited on space, with no room for a separate dryer and washing machine in their kitchen, garage or utility room.

If you live in a flat, apartment or smaller home, washer dryers offer a convenient way to wash and dry your clothes whilst taking up a small physical footprint.

In the winter months when drying clothes outside isn’t possible, washer dryers also prevent the need to hang wet clothes on dryers or radiators, which may lead to unwanted moisture and condensation around your home.

Are washer dryers as efficient as a separate washing machine and dryer?

A topic of much debate in the Mumsnet forums, it’s fair to say that whilst the washing ability on a washer dryer can be just as effective as a stand-alone washing machine, washer dryers don’t tend to be as effective as a stand-alone tumble dryer.

That said, for small loads and infrequent use, they still do work, albeit not as quickly, making them a practical solution for drying clothes such as towels and bed linen without causing condensation in your living space.

The load capacity on washer dryers tends to be smaller than a stand-alone tumble dryer and you may find it takes longer to dry, but if you are limited on space, certainly don’t rule them out.

The [negative] opinions mainly come from people who have space for separate washers and dryers or who do s*&t loads of washing. For people who do smaller amounts of washing and don’t have much space, they do work. The dryer load is smaller and it takes a while but I’m only really drying small amounts or bedding/towels which is only once a week for me” (Explained by aptly named Roominmyhouse)

How to buy the best washer dryer for you:

  • Maximum loads: As a general rule, the wash load capacity will generally be higher on a washer dryer than the drying capacity. The larger the drum size, the more clothes you can dry at once, meaning fewer cycles and less energy. A 10kg machine can generally accommodate washing for a family of six. For smaller households or those that want less frequent drying, an 8kg/5kg or 7kg/4kg capacity washer dryer should be sufficient.
  • Energy efficiency: Make sure to check the energy efficiency rating to ensure your tumble dryer is as economical and environmentally friendly as possible. It’s worth remembering that the energy ratings recently changed, now running from A-G and that brands have to work much harder to achieve a high energy efficiency rating. A machine that was an A on the old scale, will now be a D. For washer dryers, you are likely to have two individual ratings, one of which may be better than the other.
  • Delay start: Some washer dryers offer delayed start, meaning you can get your dryer to start at a later time to suit you or when electricity is cheaper.
  • Range of programmes: This will allow you to choose the best settings to keep your clothes in the best possible condition. Most washer dryers have a combined wash and dry cycle, whilst others have a choice of iron dry (slightly damp), cupboard dry (ready to be folded straight from the machine) or extra dry (for duvets and towels). Other helpful programmes include a gentle cycle for wools or a steam mode to reduce the creases and prevent the need for ironing.
  • Sensor technology: Some washer dryers come with innovative sensors and load adjustment that can not only stop the dryer when the laundry is dry, but also use less power and water by immediately adjusting the cycle based on the size of your load. In the current climate, this can be a big positive in terms of reducing running costs.
  • Additional features: Washer dryers that offer a quick wash and dry cycle of under an hour for small cycles are a really popular choice, particularly when it comes to Sunday school uniform prep or getting ready for a night out. Some even offer Add-In features, allowing you to quickly add forgotten items even once the cycle has started.
  • Noise: The spin speed of washer dryers varies quite considerably, with some offering super fast spin speeds of up to 1600 rpm. Faster spinning tends to be a little on the noisier side, but may be more efficient at removing excess water, which in turn can reduce the running time and cost.

Energy ratings explained

Now more than ever, we are becoming increasingly conscious of the amount of energy our household consumes. Whilst it’s fair to say most washer dryers use a significant amount of energy, some are more energy efficient than others.

Energy ratings in the UK have recently changed. Previously displayed as a rating from  A+++ to D on the EU energy rating system, post-Brexit we now have a UK-specific system that rates appliances from A to G (with A being the most energy efficient).

Brands now have to work much harder to be considered energy-efficient, and as such a tumble dryer that was rated A+++  before 2021 will now be rated as D.

Many washer dryers will be rated E, F and G, but can still be used efficiently. If you’re keen to keep your costs down (which may seem somewhat impossible at present), technology such as automatic load adjustment can help reduce the cost and time of your cycles; as can using the dryer only for small loads of essentials rather than each and every wash.

What is the best washer dryer?

For its energy efficiency, large load capacity, ECOWash programme and automatic load adjustment, we believe the AEG OkoMix Technology L8WEC166C 10Kg / 6Kg Washer Dryer is the best washer dryer on our list; particularly for households with more than two children.

For smaller households, or those looking for a slightly smaller price tag, the John Lewis JLWD1614 Freestanding Washer Dryer comes a close second.

Which washer dryer is quietest?

With running volumes of just 54db, the Samsung Series 5 WD80TA046BX/EU with ecobubble washer dryer has the quietest motor of our recommended washer dryers.

How we chose our recommendations

Recommendations from real Mumsnet users

There is a lot of debate within the Mumsnet forums on how to make the perfect mashed potato, with many users sharing their hints and tips on both the best ingredients and the best tools for the job.

First, we sought out the trusted opinions of Mumsnet users, to get their feedback on their favourite methods for making mashed potato, as well as the potato mashers that they rate, recommend and use in their own homes.

We also looked out for any negative reviews, where Mumsetters highlighted products that they felt were poor quality, difficult to clean or simply struggled to tackle those more stubborn lumps.

Expert opinions

Next up, we considered reviews and feedback from trusted industry experts. We want to be confident that the products we recommend are fit for purpose, so we looked out for award-winning products or those that were well regarded in the marketplace, including those recommended by food experts, chefs and consumer champions such as Which.

Authentic consumer reviews

Finally, to bring you our definitive list of the potato mashers on the market, we thoroughly investigated genuine, in-depth customer reviews on retailer sites such as Amazon, Lakeland, and John Lewis to get wider consumer experiences regarding the products on our shortlist.

Why you should trust us

We work hard to provide honest and independent advice you can trust and we spend hours scouring the Mumsnet forums and online bestseller lists to find products that real parents rate.
