By Lucy Cotterill | Last updated Sep 21, 2023

If you’ve got pets in your home, you’ll know only too well that pet hair gets absolutely everywhere and only the best vacuum cleaner will help you maintain a hair-free home.
From clinging to your clothes to covering your carpets (stubborn pet stains may require the best carpet cleaner or best steam cleaner) we may adore our four-legged friends, but the inevitable moulting – particularly in the summer seasons – can create a real challenge when it comes to keeping your home clean.
Cleaning regularly when you have a pet at home is an absolute must, but using a traditional cleaner can result in a large tangle of pet hair, clogging up our vacuum cleaners and resulting in zero suction power. If you’re continuously spending your weekends cutting pet hair off your vacuum’s brush roll, it may be time for a switch.
Whether it’s an upright vacuum, a cylinder vacuum or even a handheld vacuum to use in your car, we’ve researched the best vacuums for pet hair to help keep your home clean, hygienic and hair-free.
From Shark to Hoover, Dyson to Miele, here are the best vacuums for pet hair you can buy.

Claiming to offer more suction power than any other upright vacuum cleaner brand, Shark comes with a great reputation amongst Mumsnet users and consumers for its high-quality performance and anti-hair wrap technology – features that make cleaning your home almost enjoyable. The Miele Complete C3 Cat and Dog Pro cylinder vacuum is no exception. Designed specifically for pet owners, it can smoothly and simply tackle all types of floor surfaces to trap away dust, dirt and animal hair. If you’re concerned about hygiene, you’ll also love the charcoal Active AirClean filtration system, which works with the Miele HyClean 3D dust bag to absorb odours and allergens around your home.

7. Best suction vacuum for pet hair: Dyson V15 Detect Absolute Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

Price on writing: £700 | Buy now from Argos
Key specs
Dimensions: 27.94 x 16.51 x 93.98cm | Weight: 2.6kg | Bin capacity: 0.9 litres | Vacuum type: Stick | Bagless?: Yes | Cordless?: Yes | Suction power: 230AW | Noise: 75dB | Battery life: Up to 60 minutes | Warranty: 2 years
What we like
Intelligent with state-of-the-art technology
Strong suction and performance
Laser picks out dust particles you can’t see with the naked eye
What we don't like
Very expensive
One of Dyson’s heaviest models
What Mumsnet users say
“I just got the Dyson V15 Detect. Stupidly expensive but it is brilliant. It has this laser light, which sounds like a gimmick, but actually using it in a darkened room, you pick up so much more debris from the floor than you thought was there. The V15 just seems more powerful [than the V10].” (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Piapea)
“Replaced our ageing Dyson V8 with a V15 recently and it’s amazing. It’s a totally different vacuum and as good as any corded one I’ve ever owned. Runs for nearly an hour and batteries can be swapped easily but rarely need to. It’s awesome on carpets or hard floors and copes very well with shaggy rugs. Doesn’t get tangled in hair at all and [it’s] an incredible piece of machinery. I wouldn’t swap it for anything.” (Rated by Mumsnet user Okbutnotgreat)
Our verdict
Whilst the price tag is certainly substantial, pet owners will love the Dyson V15 Detect. It's an impressive, high-tech vacuum cleaner that can even clean dirt not visible to the naked eye thanks to its ingenious laser functionality. If you want proof of its performance, it’ll even show you how well it’s cleaning, displaying somewhat shocking statistics about the amount of dust and allergens you have sucked up as you work around your home.
A vacuum with a weak suction when you’re trying to pick up the peskiest of pet hairs is nobody’s idea of fun, and it can make the time you have to spend cleaning even longer. Thankfully, you won’t have that problem with the V15, as it’s Dyson’s most powerful vacuum yet. It has three different power levels to accommodate a variety of different floor types, however, the V15 Detect Absolute will automatically adjust its power to suit the floor surface. We love that there are eight different attachment tools to choose from, including the hair screw tool which can whip up pet hair with ease. You can also easily convert this cordless vacuum into a handheld model, ideal for a quick clean of the stairs or to tackle those high ceiling nooks and crannies.

Our verdict
Short on time and looking for some help keeping your home clean and hygienic? Mumsnet users cannot speak more highly of these innovative robot vacuums, which can independently navigate around your home to produce an efficient and effective clean across all surfaces, from carpets to hard floors. Offering accurate edge cleaning and an 100-minute runtime, the Eufy RoboVac 15C makes light work of crumbs, dirt and pet hair. It can be controlled via an easy-to-use remote, or for the more tech-savvy amongst us, using the app or Alexa smart home devices.
The RoboVac uses two spinning brushes to clean corners and has innovative sensors to prevent it from bashing into walls or toppling down your stairs. Whilst it doesn't have a specific pet mode, there are three suction settings – Standard, Boost IQ and Max – the latter of which tackles long and short pet hair with ease.
How to choose the best vacuum cleaner for you and your pet
Here are some things to consider when purchasing a vacuum cleaner for pet hair:
Portability - How lightweight and portable is the vacuum? How easy is it to carry up and down the stairs and manoeuvre around tight corners? If it’s a heavier machine, is this outweighed (quite literally) by other benefits such as suction power and cleaning modes?
Cordless or mains powered? - If the vacuum is mains powered, you will want to consider how long the cable length is and whether you will be able to navigate around your entire home without regularly unplugging and switching sockets. For freedom around your entire home, cordless vacuums are a popular choice, but battery life can vary considerably from one model to the next. You may wish to consider vacuums with additional batteries or a short charging time for maximum efficiency.
Bin capacity - If you have several pets at home, you should consider the bin capacity of your vacuum, which will determine how often you need to empty it. Whilst bagged vacuums come with the additional cost of branded bags, they often have a higher capacity and can be less messy to empty than bagless designs.
Floor types - Some vacuums have floor heads that automatically adjust to their environment, seamlessly switching from hard floors to thick carpets with ease. Others are better suited to hard and wooden flooring. Before you buy, consider how effective the vacuum will be on your floor types and whether you will be required to switch or swap between heads or accessories.
Versatility - Some larger vacuums offer the flexibility to transform into a handheld device, which can be really practical if you have a larger home and need to switch between large expanses of carpets to high ceilings and skirting boards. Look out for vacuums with a range of attachments and cleaning options if you want to confidently cover all bases.
Anti-tangle technology - For stress-free cleaning and minimal maintenance, vacuums with anti-tangle technology and rotating brush heads can prevent build-up and clogging of your brushes. This is particularly suited to long-haired pets and even the collection of human hair.
Do you need anti-hair tangle?
Whilst it is not essential to have a vacuum cleaner with anti-hair tangle technology, it certainly helps when you’ve got pets at home, particularly if you have a breed of cat or dog that sheds significantly or moults longer hairs. Whilst you may still have to do the occasional clearing of hair build-up (even with anti-tangle brushes), the frequency and ease of maintenance are far easier on vacuums with an anti-tangle brush head.
Does it have to say 'Pet' or 'Animal' in the name?
No. Some vacuums are specifically branded for pet owners, however, there are many vacuum cleaners on the market that come with specific pet hair attachments. These are still solid all-round vacuum cleaners with a variety of versatile cleaning tools.
Do pet vacuums really work?
Yes, they do. If you have a long-haired pet who sheds significantly, it will still require some maintenance and cleaning to maintain a high level of performance, but with strong suction and anti-tangle technologies, most pet vacuum cleaners can be really effective against even embedded pet hair and dirt.
If you choose a vacuum with effective filters, you can also be safe in the knowledge that odours will be reduced too, preventing that unwelcome ‘dog smell’ that’s all so common in homes with four-legged friends.
How much should I spend on a pet vacuum cleaner?
Prices of pet vacuum cleaners vary considerably, as showcased by the selections on our list. You can pick up a practical pet cleaner for as little as £80, but for models with additional features, versatile cleaning attachments and powerful suction, you can expect to spend between £150 - £400.
Other tips for cleaning up after pets
Use throws and blankets - If you can, encourage your pet to lie or sleep in a designated area, such as a basket or sofa that is covered in a throw or blanket. This allows some of the more stubborn pet hair to build up on removable fabrics, rather than spreading it across surfaces where you will be sitting yourself.
Groom your pets regularly - For long-haired pets in particular, brushing your pet to expel shedding hair can be an efficient way to reduce the frequency of hair loss. Where possible, you should do this outside, to release hair away from carpets, clothes and upholstery. You can also get pet hair clippers to keep their fur neatly trimmed.
Consider your interiors - If you’re renovating your home, it’s worth remembering that when it comes to pet hair, hard floors are generally easier to clean than carpets and rugs. You may also want to move away from velvet, suede or fabric sofas, and opt for a more hard wearing leather instead.
Invest in a lint roller - This can be a handy tool for removing small amounts of pet hair between bigger cleans. They’re also super handy for cleaning clothes just before you leave the door – no one wants unsightly white hairs on their little black dress.
Embrace the robots - If you’re short on time, using a robot cleaner such as the eufy RoboVac can help tackle the pet hair that builds up between bigger cleans, making light work of those under-counter areas that you may otherwise miss.
