Cordless vacuum that’s good for pet hair?

BetterWithPockets · 19/03/2025 22:18

Posted recently about the very lovely golden retriever we inherited at the end of last year… He’s gorgeous but very blonde and sheds CONSTANTLY.
As a result, we’re looking for a cordless vacuum cleaner that’s good for pet hair — especially long retriever hair! — on carpets, mainly. Have done some research online but would love some personal recommendations, if anyone has any please. Would rather not spend £500 or so then find out it’s no good for what we want it for! (TBH, would rather not spend £500, but would for the right vacuum.)
Thank you!

NOT hetty!

I use my handheld Dyson for my boxer dogs hair. My Dyson is seven years old, I bought a new battery for it as the other one wore out. It did the trick with short boxer hair, I can’t comment on retriever hair though.

I use my hand held for vacuuming up small amounts of crumbs. Cleaning my blinds, my sofa, etc. I wouldn’t be without it.

Dutchhouse14 · 19/03/2025 23:33

Dyson for pet hair( v15?) is excellent but pricey

BetterWithPockets · 20/03/2025 08:16

Thank you, @AnotherDayanotherNameChangeX — will definitely avoid!

And thank you, @GenerousGardener and @Dutchhouse14. I did think it might end up being a Dyson. I’m happy to pay that kind of money (gulp) but wanted to be sure it would really do what I wanted it to before shelling out.

I panic bought hoovers in the pandemic when the cleaner couldn’t come and tried lots. Ended up going back to Dyson (shark was good but the motor broke after 2 years and hair still wrapped despite it saying it wouldn’t). Gtech was my second favourite.

BetterWithPockets · 20/03/2025 08:25

Thank you, @TeenLifeMum. Definitely don’t want to be unclogging wrapped hair the whole time, as it’s pretty much exclusively hair I want this for! Looks like Dyson it is…

I’ve had goldens for decades now, until recently 4 of them at once, hence the username 😂 and we’ve gone through many vacuums 😬
To be blunt and as much as it absolutely pains me to say this for various reasons, Dyson Animal models are the only ones I’ve found that can cope with longer dog hair. I’ve tried Henry (useless with hair in general), Vax Pet Max (monumental waste of money) and Shark (not too bad at picking up the hair but I spent more time unclogging the machine than I did actually using it). Also had a couple of other machines (Electrolux, Hoover) which were fine for general use but shrieked at the sight of dog hair.
I’ve always gone back to Dyson, and their customer service is fabulous.

We have a Dyson V7 (so quite old now) that is useful for a quick tidy up, but isn't really a replacement for a proper vacuum.

We are hoping the newer ones are better and have been looking at the Bosch Unlimited. I like that it comes with two batteries, and so one can be charging while the other is being used.

BetterWithPockets · 20/03/2025 08:38

@Fourfurrymonsters — gosh, four at once! I’m not sure how you cope(d) with all that hair…! My boy is very blonde and our carpets and floors are mainly dark so his hair REALLY shows. (He’s a lovely, lovely boy though, and has settled in very well, bless him!) Your post is really helpful — thank you. I had been looking at other brands, but it does sound as though Dyson is the only way to go.
I’m so sorry you recently lost one of your ‘pack’ btw.

I agree Dyson has excellent customer service. I'm pretty heavy handed with vacuums but Dysons have been great. Had current hand held one for around four years, great for my short haired lurcher hair.

Ilovelowry · 20/03/2025 08:45

Bosch unlimited. Two labradors. I love using it. Light, easy to empty, powerful. Our house has been transformed!

I’d not looked at Bosch, actually. Two batteries sounds very sensible.
I do have a Miele cat & dog ‘proper’ hoover so this would be something to use inbetween times — we’ve got one carpet in particular that needs vacuuming every day, possibly twice, but I don’t always want to fetch the Miele for that. (It’s the height of laziness on my part!)

I have a short haired lurcher too! (Although I have to say, having inherited a golden retriever, I never really notice her hair any more!)

Ah, interesting. It was looking as though it was definitely going to be a Dyson but you’re the second person now to mention the Bosch unlimited. Will investigate. Thank you.

I went to John Lewis on a saturday morning when they opened. I had no budget. Was prepared to spend whatever it took. I tried all the hoovers on a little stretch of carpet.

Thought I'd want a miele. Or a shark. Hated them both. Unwieldy and difficult to push.

The bosch is 2.5kg and I was able to push it after an operation last week. It literally sucks every single hair up. I am absolutely gob smacked with how good it is.

I didn’t realise you could try them out in John Lewis. Maybe I should take my retriever there!
But interesting it’s another vote for the Bosch. I do like the idea of two batteries too…

OP they have a bit of carpet that they throw dirt and grime onto for you to hoover up.
I couldn't use the miele or shark they were awful. The bosch was a dream and is amazing on the dog hair. Have fun!

Fourfurrymonsters · 20/03/2025 09:06

Thank you. They were all elderly, so we’ve actually lost 2 in 7 months, my most recent only 2 weeks ago (our Romanian rescue, not quite a full golden but with the golden coat). I’m utterly heartbroken but that’s a post for another day. Well done to you for adopting one in need.

TeenLifeMum · 20/03/2025 09:25

I didn’t say, I have 2 spaniels and 3 daughters with long her plus me (and dh but he doesn’t shed like the rest of us). I got suckered into “Dysons aren’t as good as the used to be” rhetoric but, I always go back and am still impressed.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 20/03/2025 10:14

After 2 Dyson that really didn’t last as long as I thought they should (given the price), I bought a Miele Triflex Cat & Dog cordless and it is amazing. Every time I use it I feel irritated that I bought into Dyson for so long. It was expensive but it is soooo much better.

Ah, this is useful to know, re the long hair especially. I’ve always had short-haired dogs before, and the retriever has been a real shock!

Ah, this is interesting. I have a Miele as my ‘proper’ hoover and am very pleased with it, but for some reason hadn’t thought of them for cordless. Thank you!

Oh, I’m sorry. That’s very recent. And two in seven months is brutal. They always leave such a gaping hole, I think — far, far bigger than their physical size. Sending love. X

All my dogs have been secondhand! Some from Battersea, some from the RSPCA, and some have just found their way to us via random means… I’ve never had retrievers before though, so am finding it a steep learning curve! (Have only just invested in an undercoat brush after posting another plantive thread on here: I couldn’t understand why his coat was getting so matted despite weekly brushing! It’s revolutionised my life! And his coat!)

I think we may end up with the Bosch downstairs, and move the Dyson upstairs. Oddly, I have a Trend Dust Extractor that I use as a vacuum in the house for a proper go every so often (as well as it being a dust extractor in the workshop) as it has class M filtration, so is way better than any domestic vacuum i have found. Then the battery Dyson is used to clear up after the self propelled fur dispenser Labrador on a more regular basis. Like every time he moves.

Ha! I hear you: you only have to LOOK at our retriever and he sheds! It’s a new experience for me, despite decades of dog ownership…
