How to buy the best garden hammock

There are a few things to consider before buying a hammock.

  1. Where are you going to hang it? Tree to tree, tree to wall or wall to ceiling? Alternatively, you can buy a freestanding hammock complete with a stand. There’s a handy guide here on how to choose the best hammock for your space.
  2. How big do you want the hammock to be? Is it just for you or do you want to relax with your partner or child/ren? If it’s just you, a single hammock will be fine. If not, you’ll need either a double or a family-sized hammock. Check out the dimensions before you buy.
  3. Will it be left outside on a regular basis? If so, you’ll want to look for hard-wearing materials and waterproof fabrics. It could look very old, very quickly otherwise.
  4. What style and colour do you want? This just comes down to personal taste and how you want it to look in your garden. Hammocks come in all shapes and sizes with loads of colours to choose from. Some come with pretty bohemian fringes for that festival feel or nautical stripes so you can pretend you’re at the seaside. It really is up to you!

What material is best for hammocks?

Cotton hammocks are comfortable and will dry quickly if they get wet. Weatherproof hammocks are obviously designed to use all-year-round so they’re more durable and hassle-free as you don’t need to keep taking it down when not in use. Silk hammocks are normally quite tear-proof, breathable and super lightweight so they’re perfect for camping or taking out and about.

How can you attach a hammock to a tree?

To hang a hammock to a tree you need rope for each end of the hammock which should be included with your purchase but might not be. Choose two sturdy trees about four to five metres apart. Tie on the tree straps according to the instructions and attach the hammock's ends to the tree straps. Always follow the instructions for your individual hammock.

What is the best garden hammock to buy?

Our best buy is the VonHaus single hammock. Not only does it look good and have great reviews for its comfortable feel, it’s also a great price.

How we chose our recommendations
