My verdict

There are few things I hate more than being cold in bed. But, with heating the house feeling more like a luxury than a necessity these days, sometimes it feels like wearing five pairs of socks and a bobble hat to bed is the only answer.

However, as I’ve discovered, you don’t need to blast an electric heater all night to stay cosy. The room can be chilly, but if the bed’s warm then you will be too. Enter the electric blanket.

Unlike a heated throw, which acts as an extra layer, an electric blanket goes on top of your mattress and under your sheet and it warms the bed for you.

It’s been a long time since I last used an electric blanket - our old one perished about a decade ago and was never replaced. And, since then, they’ve come a long way it would seem.

Rather than you and your partner fighting about being too hot or too cold and wrestling the duvet from each other, electric blankets now have multiple zones and temperatures to keep everyone happy.

The Vonhaus Dual Zone Electric Blanket has two controls so you and whoever you share a bed with can set your own preferred temperature - of which there are three.

It was incredibly easy to use and fast to heat up, which I definitely appreciated on cooler nights.

The dual controls and heating zones were really handy for making sure my side of the bed was the perfect temperature for me. The downside was when my husband went away and I had the bed all to myself. Half of my starfish shape was much warmer than the other because I hadn’t set both controls up.

I tested a double size Vonhaus electric blanket, but I actually have a king size bed. That meant that although the electric blanket was wide enough, it wasn’t quite long enough. Overall it wasn’t a huge problem (especially for me as I’m not very tall), but my husband complained of cold feet.

One drawback of having the blanket under the bed sheet was the fact you could feel it easily. I was very aware of where the heating elements were and although it didn’t make the bed uncomfortable, it did feel like you were making a small compromise between comfort and warmth rather than having the best of both.

I liked that the blanket is machine washable, although I haven’t yet needed to wash it. As a mum of two boys under five, pretty much everything in my life needs to be machine washable.

At under £50 I was impressed with the quality and the output of the heated blanket. It really did warm the bed up quickly and made cold nights a lot more bearable. I haven’t had to wear socks in bed for a while; long may that continue!

How I tested the Vonhaus Dual Zone Electric Blanket

I tested the Vonhaus electric blanket in my bed, which I share with my husband (and occasionally my two kids when they sneak in in the middle of the night.)

Thanks to a fairly warm start to autumn, I didn’t use this every night but I tried it any time there was a colder spell. I purposely didn’t put the heating on in my bedroom so I could see how warm this blanket actually made me feel (very, it turns out!).

My husband also tested the blanket using the dual controls, but I didn’t use the blanket when the kids were in the bed as it’s not suitable for use for children under three.

What’s in the box?

Inside the box there’s the electric blanket, the controls and the instruction manual.

The electric blanket was easy to set up ad use.

How easy is the Vonhaus electric blanket to set up and use?

To use the electric blanket, you just need to put it on top of your mattress and use the elastic attachments to keep it secure at the corners. Then you put your sheet and the rest of your bedding on, plug it in and away you go.

The instructions were easy to follow and there’s little room for user error - each control has a sliding switch where you can change the temperature. Position one is for low heat, two is for medium and position three is for high heat.

The instructions advise you: ‘for best results, warm the bed 30 minutes before use (setting 3).’ I didn’t always remember to do this, but even if I only set it to high for the five minutes I was washing my face and brushing my teeth, the bed was still cosy by the time I got in.

How quickly does the Vonhaus Dual Zone Electric Blanket heat the bed up?

On all three settings I noticed a gradual increase in warmth almost as soon as I had switched the blanket on. It was more subtle on the lower settings, whereas on the highest setting the heat was more intense.

After about five minutes on each setting I would say the bed was warm, but of course the longer you leave it to heat up, the warmer it’ll be.

On the highest setting the blanket does get quite hot, reaching 55°C. I fell asleep with it on and woke up in a sweat, so learn from my mistakes and remember to reduce the temperature down once you’re warm enough.

How effective are the electric blanket’s dual zones?

I was a bit sceptical about the blanket’s dual zones and whether the heat would actually stop in the middle of the bed, but I’m pleased to report that the zones actually worked really well.

If one person had their temperature whacked all the way up and the other had no heat at all then you could feel the edge of warmth creeping through, but overall the zones kept themselves to themselves.

When my husband was away and I had the bed to myself, I was disappointed that I’d forgotten to switch his side on too, because when I rolled over I went from a lovely, cosy cocoon to a cold shock.

How much does the electric blanket cost to run?

The Vonhaus Dual Zone Electric Blanket runs at 55-60W. Based on Ofgem’s current electricity unit rate at 26.32p per kWh, if both sides of the blanket are in use it costs around 1.6p per hour to run.

There are three heat settings.

What safety features does the Vonhaus Dual Zone Electric Blanket have?

After three hours the blanket automatically turns off so you don’t overheat which is good. Vonhaus suggests you always switch to position one (the lowest heat setting) before falling asleep, but I forgot to do this a couple of times and although I did get very warm I thankfully didn’t boil myself in my sleep.

Who is the Vonhaus Dual Zone Electric Blanket good for?

This electric blanket would be best for couples who have different heating preferences at night and who want to put an end to arguments! If one of you runs hot and the other runs cold, then rather than putting the heating on or opening a window, using this blanket could help everyone to get a better night’s sleep.

It’s also cheap to run so it’s a good option during that in-between autumn-to-winter time when some nights are warm and others baltic.

Final verdict: is the Vonhaus Dual Zone Electric Blanket worth it?

This electric blanket isn’t pretending to be anything fancy, but it doesn’t need to. It does the job it’s supposed to - heating a person and a bed - very well.

Other electric blankets might have more heat settings or zones, but I don’t think they’re necessarily needed. This provides a comfortable, cosy night’s sleep and at only £45 I think it’s a decent price for a product that’ll hopefully reduce heating bills in winter.

The quality feels decent enough, it heats up quickly and it’s machine washable. For me those things are why I’d recommend it, and why I think it’s a worthwhile winter investment.
