“I didn’t realise how bad my old mattress was until I tried the Tempur PRO SmartCool”

Our verdict

They say you can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep. After testing the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress, however, Mumsnet tester Jenny thinks perhaps you can, and that price is just under £3,000.

Jenny lives with her husband and their three children. Before testing the Tempur, she and her husband had slept on the same mattress for 14 years, which she admits she still thought was fine.

“I didn't realise how bad our old mattress was until we replaced it with this one,” Jenny said. “That sounds a bit daft when I consider that the old mattress was 14 years old and probably only cost about £500, but there was nothing terrible about it (and it's still on our spare bed for guests to use). However, the Tempur is just so much better - the surface is firm but still cushions you supportively, when you turn over there's no sinking or dipping, and the removable cover is so practical!

“Our previous mattress was a memory-foam topped one which we bought in our twenties - so mostly I think the problems were age-related,” she explained. “It wasn't awful, but we did notice it seemed to be less supportive than it used to be and I've no doubt that after 14 years the memory foam has degraded somewhat.”

Jenny’s husband suffers from eczema, something she now wonders if their old mattress was aggravating.

“My husband suffers from eczema which has become increasingly bad over the last couple of years,” she explained.

“It's possible the old mattress contributed to his symptoms, though we can't be sure.

I don't think the new mattress has cured his eczema or anything (he uses various treatments) but I do think it has helped.”

One of the Tempur’s main selling points is its motion isolation. If either sleeper moves during the night, the other should be less likely to feel it.

Jenny found this particularly useful and said it had made a big difference to her sleep:

“It’s not something I had considered until now but actually, it is SO much easier to change position with this mattress,” she admitted.

 “I think the old one was definitely starting to sink a little bit and with this one because it’s so firm, it’s much easier to just roll over without feeling like you’re moving the entire bed. 

“The edges feel nice and ergonomic and there’s no ridge so it’s more comfortable sitting on the side or running a hand along it.”

With an RRP of £2,999, there’s no skirting around the fact that the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress is a big investment, but it’s a price Jenny thinks is justified.

“It’s a big expense, there’s no getting around that, but from our experiences so far with it, I think it represents good value for money,” she told us.

“It’s firm, supportive, helps us keep cool and we both sleep really well on it. While we both slept pretty well on our old mattress, the time was right to replace it and I think given our age, sleeping patterns and general lifestyle, this was a great choice. 

“My husband and I are both quite active - we have active hobbies (including Tae Kwondo) where the risk of injury is fairly high, so it’s reassuring to know that our mattress is supportive for our (aging) bones and joints, no matter what might befall them during the day!”

How we’ve tested the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress

Jenny and her husband tested the mattress for two months, including during the many heatwaves of summer 2026. This meant they could really put the Tempur’s cooling technology to the test.

They tried the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress in king size, with a medium feel and a depth of 25cm.

Jenny sleeps on her back and sides. The couple were replacing a memory foam mattress they had shared for more than a decade.

According to Tempur, the Pro Plus SmartCool mattress has ‘technology woven into the zip-off QuickRefresh cover, making it cool to the touch and helping to absorb excess heat’. 

Thanks to the warmer-than-average nights, this was something Jenny and her husband were able to test from day one.

“We first started using the Tempur during the unprecedented heatwave(s) of summer 2026 and my husband is a very hot sleeper generally, so we were keen to see how well the mattress’ SmartCool tech would hold up,” she said.

“I do think it made a meaningful difference, particularly when we realised we didn’t have to use a mattress protector and thus could get the full benefit of the SmartCool tech. 

“Sure, there were some nights where the room was over 30C+ (even with the AC) and none of us were getting great sleep, but in normal circumstances we both think the Tempur has helped with heat absorption. 

“I don’t sleep hot generally but sometimes have the odd night where I wake up uncomfortably warm. This has happened far less with the Tempur.”

Another key feature is Tempur’s ‘Advanced Material’, which the brand says ‘absorbs more motion and adapts better than ever’. In practice, it’s designed to reduce movement across the mattress, so one sleeper is less likely to disturb the other.

“With our old mattress, my husband and I would often wake each other up just by moving around,” Jenny said.

“I think the Advanced Material feature has helped reduce this. We’ve both gotten up and left the room without waking the other up (which didn’t happen very often with the old mattress) since using the Tempur. While I’d say this is influenced by how deeply the other one is sleeping at the time, I do think that we are disturbing each other less in general.”

Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool: what’s in the box? 

Nowadays, lots of mattresses ordered online arrive rolled up and need time to settle before use.

Tempur delivered Jenny’s mattress ready to use in a protective plastic wrapper, with no faffing about with bulky packaging, boxes or set-up instructions.

Delivery and set-up

“It was ordered online and delivered fully assembled and ready to use,” Jenny explained.

“The delivery team did offer to take it up to the bedroom but we ended up doing it ourselves because we hadn’t fully decided where it would go yet. For context - this was during one of the (many) heatwaves of summer 2026 and we were mostly sleeping in our spare room, which is the upstairs of a garage conversion, as this is where the air conditioner was.”

Jenny admitted that the decision to take matters into their own hands was one they came to regret when they discovered the weight of the mattress:

“We moved it ourselves up to the spare room in its plastic wrapping. It was very heavy (46.2kg), but my husband and I managed it together. We initially placed it on the spare bed and unwrapped it there. There was no noticeable smell and it was ready to use that night.

“After the summer holidays, we moved the mattress back down the stairs, through the ground floor of the house and up some other stairs to our regular bedroom. Its weight made it very tricky to manoeuvre, but aside from a few knocked picture frames and the odd swear word, we managed it without too much drama. Needless to say, we will not be moving it again!”

Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress: How easy is it to clean?

Another feature of the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress is its QuickRefresh cover. The removable top cover can be zipped off and popped in the washing machine for a regular refresh.

“The QuickRefresh cover is removable and washable, but we haven’t needed to wash it yet.” Jenny told us.

“When we first used the mattress we put a protector on it as we didn’t realise you didn’t have to, it’s only been more recently that we took it off. 

“However, I unzipped and removed the cover and then put it back on to see how easy it was to do. The zip glides smoothly and even though the zip is between the mattress and the headboard, I was able to fit my hand along the edge just fine to unzip it and then zip it back on with no trouble. It’s a really nice, practical feature.”

The removable top cover can be zipped off and popped in the washing machine for a regular refresh.

Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool: sleep quality and movement

Jenny and her husband have both been impressed with their sleep quality since switching to the Tempur mattress. 

“My husband adjusted to the mattress straight away and slept well on it from night one (he loves a firm mattress),” she said.

 “It took me a few nights to get used to it, but now it’s been a few weeks, I sleep very well on it too. Since the end of the summer holidays I’ve had to get used to waking up early again and often find myself coming out of a very deep sleep in the mornings.”

The Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress is also designed to reduce disturbance when one person moves, something Jenny thinks has made a real difference to their sleep:

“It’s not something I had considered until now but actually, it is SO much easier to change position with this mattress,” she explained.

 “I think the old one was definitely starting to sink a little bit and with this one because it’s so firm, it’s much easier to just roll over without feeling like you’re moving the entire bed. The edges feel nice and ergonomic and there’s no ridge so it’s more comfortable sitting on the side or running a hand along it.”

How comfortable and supportive is the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress?

While neither Jenny nor her husband suffers from significant aches and pains, they both found that this mattress offered plenty of comfort and support.

“Having been used to a fairly soft mattress before, I found the Tempur took a few nights to get used to, however I have come to really appreciate the feel of it,” Jenny told us.

“It doesn’t dip or sink when you lie down on it - it gently cushions your body. I sleep on my back and both sides, and often used to wake up with an ache down one side but I’ve noticed this hasn’t happened since using the Tempur.”

Jenny’s husband has also seen the benefits and slept well from day one.

“My husband (who loves a firm mattress and never sleeps well on ones that are ‘too squashy’) got on well with it straight away and has slept really well on it on his front and sides,” she added.

“It supports both of us well in terms of joints, hips and back. While our old mattress saw us through 14 years, including three pregnancies, we bought it in our mid-twenties and we’re both 39 now so, at the risk of sounding like a boring old fart, it’s nice to have a mattress that feels reliably supportive as we move into our next era.”

Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool: quality and value for money

“It all feels premium and well made,” Jenny said after testing the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress.

As for whether she’d splash her own cash on this, she reckoned she would, but that she’d check for a bargain first:

“Because our old mattress had nothing urgently wrong with it other than its age, we probably would have waited until the Tempur went on sale to buy it,” she said.

 “I do think it's good value for money, but £3,000 is a lot! If it was more of an urgent purchase, we would buy it at full price -10 years is a long time for a mattress to last!”

Tempur’s 10-year guarantee also makes it feel like a more worthwhile investment for Jenny:

“It's supportive, cool, well-made and premium-feeling and it comes with a 10 year guarantee” she said. “[It] also [has] a 100 night trial period so you can give it a go and still return it if you don't like it!”

Final verdict: is the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress worth it?

Overall, Jenny and her husband have found very little they don’t like about the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattress.

“It's comfortable, well-designed and has helped my husband and I sleep better,” she told us.

“While I can't speak to its reliability and performance over a long period of time, it does come with a 10 year guarantee which I find very reassuring. The initial cost is very steep, but in terms of longevity, it feels like it would be worth it… ask me again in 10 years!”
