Vote tomorrow at the conference with major implications

Lib Dem conference ‘descends into culture wars’ with trans vote
Party wrong to debate pro-trans proposals that will ‘be weaponised against us’, say campaigners

Published 20 September 2026 6:45pm BST
The Liberal Democrats have been accused of “taking a sledgehammer to women’s rights” by debating proposals for more “inclusive” rules on single-sex spaces.
The party will vote on Monday on a proposal to scrap new guidance banning transgender women, who are born male, from female toilets and changing rooms at its annual conference.
The plans are set out in an emergency motion selected by Lib Dem members, which will also force the party to take a firm stance on whether “trans women are women”.
Liberal Voice for Women, a Lib Dem group campaigning for sex-based rights, warned the policy would be pushed through by a conference “stacked with activists” and force the party “back into the culture wars”.
The backlash threatens to embroil the Lib Dem conference in a transgender row for a second year running, despite Sir Ed Davey insisting on Saturday that he led “the most united party in British politics”.

He is asked about women who say that they feel threatened by the presence of men in toilets, and his reply is that he 'doesn't agree with them' because he believes in equality.

he doesn't agree because it literally doesn't affect his life in any way whatsoever

women are just support humans to him

he listens to the likes of Helen belcher not because Helen is trans but because Helen is a man

The most accurate and logical response would be that he doesn't care.

'I don't agree' just doesn't make sense in this context.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 22/09/2026 13:39

Given the lib dems history of housing and enabling some appalling predators. Davey's reluctance to bar men from accessing women and girls undressing in changing rooms, showers, prison cells etc is par for the course.

The LGBT Lib Dems are a bunch of people who have no responsibilities and too much time. They dominate the whole party and have engaged in behaviour to intimidate, bully and otherwise force individuals out of the LDs. They were heavily involved in what happened to Natalie Bird. Numerous members also sit on other groups within the federal organisation within the party. They have more influence within the party for this reason. The number of active members who participate at national level is surprisingly small. Its a few hundred or so, that's it. Few people realise how the whole party is largely run out of sheds and isn't a professional outfit.

Ordinary female members who have full time jobs and kids don't have a chance compared to this, because it isn't their whole life obsession. They don't attend nationals. They haven't got the time to be on every sodding committee ever. We can't compete.

This is one of the key issues relating directly to sex discrimination - women with kids don't have the same representation because they don't have the time to represent their own interests in this way. And if we do we face levels of abuse and harassment that far outweigh that ANY male has to contend with.

Also see the Green Party.

This is why both parties are in such an utter mess. They are not in a fit state to be governing anything tbh.

Here's Natalie saying 50mins ago, exactly what I said 2hrs ago.

There's a reason for this.

Well Davey can always fall back on claiming that his advisors were dishonest.

People can tell you until they are blue in the face that e.g. the EHRC guidance does not change the law or that something fishy is going on at the Post Office, but if somebody lied to you, what can you do?

Former Post Office minister says he was lied to about "serious flaws" in the Horizon IT system.

The Radical Association circa 2017.

There were no complaints though. None. Nadda. Didn't happen. Was just rogue evil Natalie.

Same way Manchester Hospitals had no record of males being on female mental health wards.

Everything magically didn't happen because there's no record. Apparently. Just difficult transphobic women. No liars lying of course.

That mirrors exactly what happened to the Greens. Entryism.

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2026 14:58

I don't even know if it was entryism. I think there was just an existing clique who wanted power and control.

The LGBT lib dems went through a period of blocking everyone who disagreed on twitter and reporting them. I think lots of women got banned on twitter from that.

I know some LDs (I would name them as they disclosed their identity on MN) were stalking MN. Their names came up in conversation and bingo within about fifteen minutes they appeared on MN. They included LD in elected roles who admitted their identity on MN.

Either they or a mate were clearly involved in the stalking and monitoring of MN and were probably involved in trying to get people banned from MN in 2018. I know they tried to get me banned at one point. There was one night it all kicked off and played out in real time on here.

It was eye opening.

If that's how they were behaving - using their real names - on MN you can imagine what they were doing within the party. And probably still is because no one ever challenged them properly within the party. No one can because they have so much influence. They know all the right people.

You'll note that Tim Farron was exited because of the LGBT Lib Dems. That's the point. They run the party.

Natalie, of course, was subsequently vindicated in the courts. Quite rightly.

I grew up in the South West, where people like my working class Daily Mail reading parents have been happy to loyally vote Lib Dem for years, as candidates have generally been sensible, reachable and focussed on local issues. Do they really want to stick two fingers up at this tranche of voters in order to steal Queers For Palestine types from the Greens?

They've lost my vote, unfortunately not many parties are brave enough to challenge the trans ideology and the continuing mysogyny.

I know this is a bit cheeky however I've just started a petition about better access to evidence based, science based information rather than the gender affirming information for our teens when they query their gender. Our NHS site referred us to an LGBQT+ site which is a bit like referring an anorexic patient to Slimming World...

I think they'll try and hide it though, and Labour probably won't bring it up for fear of annoying their extreme left supporters...

None of this makes any sense. He just throws around words like 'equality' and 'respect' without anchoring them to anything tangible.

He is asked about women who say that they feel threatened by the presence of men in toilets, and his reply is that he 'doesn't agree with them' because he believes in equality. The over riding impression is that he doesn't have a clue what he is talking about.

It's striking that somebody so invested in 'equality' has no understanding of equality law.

I didn’t think I could despise Davey more than I already did, but indeed I can. He listened with patience, did he?

Sanctimonious arse.

murasaki · 22/09/2026 15:55

Back when Davey was campaigning for carers, based on real life experience, he seemed ok. But that ship quickly left the harbour, not just with a massive outboard motor, but gunning for a water speed record.

Imdunfer · 22/09/2026 16:02

iwishitwouldstartraining · 22/09/2026 10:30

As a Gen X woman I am instinctively resistant to the idea that male and female behaviour is different, but I don't think it's plausible to say that male and female sexuality are the same. It's not as though there was ever any female equivalent to all those lads mags in the 90s. I know that Cosmo tried doing nude centrefolds in the 70's but they weren't a thing by the time I was reading the magazine a decade or so later. Men in the sex industry have always had vastly more male than female customers. If there was an equivalent female market for all this stuff somebody would have found it by now.

Lesbians might be attracted to women, but they haven't changed sex.

Research published in the last couple of weeks - babies of 4 hours old show sex based differences in looking at side by side videos of a face and a Newton's cradle. It was a well designed double blind study, too. They didn't know the sex of the baby or which video they were looking at, they just recorded where they were looking and how long for.

Four hours old.

That is nature, not nurture.

They have terrorised the whole party.

Imagine Kemi Badenoch, Rosie Duffield, Zoe Hollowood, Emma Bateman, Joanna Cherry, Tonia Antoniazzi, Johann Lamont, Pam Gosal, in a political supergroup. They could do amazing things. A couple of Baronnesses in the other place, and they'd be unstoppable.

Hard agree. And it doesn't just apply to the lib dems. It's why these people until very recently, had free rein in schools and child health care. The people charged with safeguarding their children (parents / carers) are busy keeping a roof over their heads and all the associated challenges of modern day life. It didn't occur to them until it was too late that adults with views that should be nowhere near children had been given access to schools and the NHS and able to groom and gaslight with no challenge.

That's the reason why this government (full of transactivists) has been forced to roll back on all this, with new statutory guidelines banning adults from telling children that gender identity is real and socially transitioning children in secret. They know it's wrong and dangerous. They'll never apologise but are finally acting to protect children after pressure from those busy parents.
