Vote tomorrow at the conference with major implications

Lib Dem conference ‘descends into culture wars’ with trans vote
Party wrong to debate pro-trans proposals that will ‘be weaponised against us’, say campaigners

Published 20 September 2026 6:45pm BST
The Liberal Democrats have been accused of “taking a sledgehammer to women’s rights” by debating proposals for more “inclusive” rules on single-sex spaces.
The party will vote on Monday on a proposal to scrap new guidance banning transgender women, who are born male, from female toilets and changing rooms at its annual conference.
The plans are set out in an emergency motion selected by Lib Dem members, which will also force the party to take a firm stance on whether “trans women are women”.
Liberal Voice for Women, a Lib Dem group campaigning for sex-based rights, warned the policy would be pushed through by a conference “stacked with activists” and force the party “back into the culture wars”.
The backlash threatens to embroil the Lib Dem conference in a transgender row for a second year running, despite Sir Ed Davey insisting on Saturday that he led “the most united party in British politics”.

I grew up in the South West, where people like my working class Daily Mail reading parents have been happy to loyally vote Lib Dem for years, as candidates have generally been sensible, reachable and focussed on local issues. Do they really want to stick two fingers up at this tranche of voters in order to steal Queers For Palestine types from the Greens?

I actually think the Lib Dems are ideologically committed to TWAW, it is not just a electioneering ploy.

Some years ago i came to the conclusion that they are perhaps the worst of the lot on this issue. They have this weird attitude about it.....which is thoroughly detached from reality. They see it as a liberal human rights issue ( but they forget that female people are also human and also have established rights). You cannot argue them around at all. They are immune.

Yes, the Liberals always had/have a good record on local issues, but on this issue they are a lost cause.

Shortshriftandlethal · 22/09/2026 16:47

Lib Dems are like Quakers. Middle class, happy clappy and often with a startled look that makes them seem somehow a bit detached from reality. Too lost in nice ideas. No real passion.

I agree. Lib Dem MPs seemed to be the most enthusiastic singers of the EDM against the EHRC code of practice. I thought some of it was virtue signalling, but after watching the motion at the conference yet, I think there are a lot of true believers in the party.

EasternStandard · 22/09/2026 16:54

It’s quite cushy as a Lib Dem politician. Ed Davey from the sidelines.

They’re ok apart from this, but a power sharing agreement where they do push this through is a whole other ball game.

Women have got so far with sheer effort. They’d throw it away.

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2026 16:55

A lot of LDs see liberalism as individual liberty - more to the point sexual liberty. But this is invariably a mens sexual rights position and to hell with whom that harms as a class.

There been a shift from understanding liberalism as discussing issues and coming to a balanced and compromised position through debate and understanding to understanding liberalism as a tick box of set fixed ideas which if you don't sign up to them without question, you are a raving fascist.

It is the betrayal of everything liberal in essence. It is authoritarian and controlling. It is anti debate and pro intimidation.

Remember that time it kicked off in 2018?

But Ed Davey gives the impression that he only started thinking about the entire concept of human rights 30 seconds ago.

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2026 17:02

It's about liberal sexual freedom. Which usually is basically about men getting their legs over and cracking one off and not about the best interests of women.

They see it as a "human rights issue" that male people have the right to over-rule the rights of female people because female people are less important.

That's not a "human right" that's "patriarchy"

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2026 17:07

The complaints to the LDs about the conduct of certain transactivists that 'went missing' are a whole story in themselves.

The LDs denied that anyone quit the party or made a complaint in 2017/2018 about this subject.

Part of the trouble is that Davey is never challenged in a meaningful way about this. Ian Dale in the link upthread predictably asked about toilets. It would be much more revealing of he had asked why Davey thinks 12 year old girls should undress for swimming alongside a man of Davey's age? Or why he thinks the sex crimes of voyeurism and indecent exposure shouldn't apply to any man watching girls in a women's changing room.

It's always bloody toilets rather than criminal sex offences.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 22/09/2026 16:37

Hard agree. And it doesn't just apply to the lib dems. It's why these people until very recently, had free rein in schools and child health care. The people charged with safeguarding their children (parents / carers) are busy keeping a roof over their heads and all the associated challenges of modern day life. It didn't occur to them until it was too late that adults with views that should be nowhere near children had been given access to schools and the NHS and able to groom and gaslight with no challenge.

That's the reason why this government (full of transactivists) has been forced to roll back on all this, with new statutory guidelines banning adults from telling children that gender identity is real and socially transitioning children in secret. They know it's wrong and dangerous. They'll never apologise but are finally acting to protect children after pressure from those busy parents.

Not just in the TRA space. I thought it was a great point in general.

Plus, if a woman with children does make time to be politically active in the interests of women and children, she is immediately vulnerable to an attack of "You say children are important but here you are leaving them without you so you can play politics".

Women aren't allowed to advocate for ourselves until we have done our duty by everyone else... which will never be done.

Imagine Kemi Badenoch, Rosie Duffield, Zoe Hollowood, Emma Bateman, Joanna Cherry, Tonia Antoniazzi, Johann Lamont, Pam Gosal, in a political supergroup. They could do amazing things. A couple of Baronnesses in the other place, and they'd be unstoppable.

If there was a big push by the handmaidens to change the EA by hook or by crook, it would be great if KB could bring together a cross party supergroup to fight it. 😍

Or about men invading inappropriate groups because they are on a power trip and the group is otherwise irrelevant to them (see menopause or breastfeeding groups for example). It's about validation using women not transwomen being excluded as such. It's just not a fucking service for them.

Yes. It's worth reminding ourselves that we're in a completely different place than we were 5 - 10 years ago. Transactivists will no longer be able to push things through behind closed doors.
Any challenge to the EA will be forensically challenged.
The dodgy conversion practices bill will meet major opposition from countless legally well informed LGB organisations. Along with all the child centred organisations who will ensure that the crap data it's based on and the Davey style bullshit opposed to safeguarding children is fully exposed.

The problem is ten years ago they gutted the party of most people who knew about this stuff in detail and were speaking out. So now it's all just robots nodding in agreement because they are all yes men.

I understand. I was thinking at a national level but I can't see how this would apply to the captured lib dems or the delusional greens.🙄

At local level all they are interested in is NIMBY stuff. The disconnect between the national party and the local parties is utterly nuts. That's why you get a lot of people willing to vote LD at local level but not willing to vote for them at national.

It's like two completely different entities.

And don't get me started on the bullshit at local level.

What does a Lib Dem “trans activist” look like?
I will not take any lessons on feminism from any organisation which dehumanises, misgenders and creates a false narrative around any marginalised group of people. In fact, I’ve noticed that many of the most unpleasantly noisy men in these organisations have been some of the greatest barriers to anything I’ve wanted to achieve on women’s rights over decades.

God she's actually brain dead.

Whoopie. Join the club. Except. Real world application.

Totally and utterly away with the fairies.

It's like watching someone doing English homework and totally missing the point hat you need to read the question very carefully and understand the entire paragraph properly.

"My feminism was born when I went to university and started to understand the structural inequalities facing women in a society that was run by men and working for men."

Good luck explaining structural inequalities facing women if legislation and policy can't distinguish sex.
