The problem is more that if the concept of 'sex' no longer exists in law and policy, then everything just becomes mixed sex and unlawful sex discrimination ceases to exist.

The exceptions in the UK equality act allow single sex spaces because it is acknowledged that it is acceptable to object to the presence of a person of the opposite sex in some situations. In contrast, the Roxy Tickle case demonstrated that in Australia this idea doesn't exist.

If that is the case, why have single sex wards at all?

And this is before taking into account the fact that Australia is now a paradise for predators. Any man who wants to access vulnerable women and children can simply say he is a woman and by-pass safeguarding systems, whether innate or external. Jimmy Saville levels of access.

I know I care a lot more about single-sex spaces than the average person does. But it's also not a top issue for me (it probably isn't even in my top 10) so I don't expect others to put this issue above all else. Luckily for me, I'm a right-wing voter, so the parties I vote for tend to be better on this issue anyway.

I don't know enough about Australian politics to comment on that but in the UK it's more of a two pronged attack on women's rights.

The left makes equality law ridiculous, which is an excuse for Reform to announce that they will abolish the Equality Act, and therefore all the legislation that has protected women from unlawful discrimination since 1975.

It’s harder there as you’ll need legislative change to get out of this which requires a GE. Usually though this kind of thing gets changed if right wing parties get in.

I do find it quite funny that roxy tickle is now one of the most famous men in the world.

It's going to take an election and political will. Unfortunately this is a pretty low piority issue for voters so it's difficult to see it changing anytime soon.

I heard this a lot in the run up to the last GE. 'Gender identity is such a non issue. There are far more pressing issues that should take priority etc etc.' But for me being put in a position where I would be forced to deny the truth and accept and acknowledge a pack of lies became my top priority. Without being able to speak the truth and be safe in the knowledge that my rights are valid why would I as a woman bow down to any political party or figure supporting this?

I would say that yes, of course there are more pressing issues than gender identity. But if you take that argument to its logical conclusion, there would only be one pressing issue that we should all focus on.

Some might think that gender identity is less pressing than the cost of living. OK, let's focus on that.

But then cost of living is less serious than the threat of war from the middle east or Russia. OK, let's put all our energy into that.

But we would survive a war, and we wouldn't survive climate breakdown. OK, that's our priority.

Oh wait, AI might kill us all within 3 years, let's forget about the climate and just deal with AI. In fact, everything else at all can go by the wayside while we deal with the single issue that we consider most important. (If we can even agree on what is most important).

Some have spoken about changing the laws but it's not one of the top issues in Australia (that tends to be cost of living/housing/healthcare/immigration etc). They may or may not change it (eventually)
