Just generally, it seems to me that stickers on doors in women's loos is a really good idea.

I'm not sure the stickers will make much of a difference. Most women have heard of this issue they just don't care because they feel like it doesn't affect them. My 70 year mum is a perfect example of this (I've spoken about this with her many times). She's never seen a man in a women's space and she isn't ever likely to (she doesn't play sport nor is she likely to end up in prison) so why should she care? She's going to just vote for whichever party promises to make her medicines cheaper.

Ask her if she is willing to share a hospital bay for an inpatient stay with a man.

Haven't asked her but I suspect she probably thinks the odds of that happening are extremely low given there are so few transwomen out there. I might try try see if that convinces her though

My mother had to share a ward with a man in Queensland 10 years ago. Her distress as a domestic violence survivor with dementia was heartbreaking but there was nothing we could do.

Judges have to operate with specific sentencing guidelines. There would be clear guidelines for breaches of equality law and I doubt the judges have to discretion to decide which element of the law they enforce and which they don't.

My DM had to last year. She was unable to move around so was put in pads and changed in the bed when she weed or had a bowel movement. DM found this massively humiliating. Had she realised that the patient in the next bed was a man she would have felt even more humiliated. I kept the curtain drawn between her bed and his to protect her dignity.

Or intimate care should she require aged care. It's devastating that the elderly and disabled women are so at risk in this. I understand this is an issue in Northern Europe at the moment.

my ill , mildly demented mum was discharged from hospital late at night with a ‘care’ package. 2 men arrived at about 10pm when she was already beside herself, expecting to undress her and change her pad and put her to bed

when we declined the care and asked them to send women, the men got seriously arsey, to the point I had to point out that they had no actual right to undress my mother. They thoroughly seemed to feel that my mum was the unreasonable one for not wanting to be undressed in front of men she’d only just met and the care company categorically refused to arrange any sort of replacement

Good on you for standing up for your Mum and demanding better care. It is so dehumanising to expect a an elderly woman, or any woman, to go along with that, and for it not to be upsetting.

I just don't think these arguments would be enough to sway my mum as she is a maths person (economist) and she knows that only about 0.3% of the adult population are transwomen which makes the odds of ending up sharing a hospital room with one extremely small. She has private health insurance so I don't think she ever has to share a room when I come to think of it.

Australia is broken. Tickle is a man in the eyes of every sane person and Sall is a hero. Only legislation can cure the madness now.

Trans-identified men as in-patients on female wards, as carers in a care facility or in the client's home, as health care assistants and nurses and doctors. Those odds are stacking up against your mum. Let's hope she doesn't need intimate care from a Beth Upton 🙏

No economist would assume a uniform distribution throughout a population. She'd need more data on geographic and demographic variables. As @AimsAndObjectives says, TW occurrence seems weighted towards healthcare settings. We might also add local government and youth initiatives.

Plus, 0.3% of the population (if correct) is 0.6% of the male population. One in 167. Even before weighting for higher incidence settings, it's not vanishingly rare.

They would not significantly increase the odds especially as a lot of hospitals do single room. (private hospitals do anyway). The chance of going into general hospital and seeing a transwoman in your room is well below %1.

I'm not saying that it's not an issue but trying to present it as 'this is something that will likely happen to you' is not convincing for people when they find out how few transwomen are out there. A better argument might be to try to appeal to women's sense of community ('it probably won't happen to you, but it will happen to some woman out there')

That's pretty much exactly what we all do. I'm not planning on being sent to prison however I care about the women who do end up in there. I am aware of their vulnerability and will campaign for their rights to single sex spaces.

My children are grown adults now but it won't stop me from campaigning for children's safeguarding.

I'm healthy and fortunate not to currently require medical care but I campaign for women's dignity and rights to be safe in our hospitals. The majority of our population do not have private medical care with the luxury of a private room. I've come across transgender nursing staff in several hospitals where family members have been an inpatient. Your mother may not be as removed from these scenarios as she estimates.
