How we chose the most beautiful girl names

We started our baby name search with the most popular baby names for girls and boys registered in England and Wales in 2022 as recorded by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Every year, the ONS collects birth registration data, analysing birth name frequency, ranking names on popularity and categorising by sex. The latest stats, from 2022, were released in May 2024. We also checked the Central Statistics Office, Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency and the National Records of Scotland in order to pick the most beautiful girl names for you to look through.

Along with selecting some pretty girl names, including beautiful rare names for girls from our own baby name articles, we also checked Mumsnet’s own Baby Names forum to see which beautiful baby names are being chosen and recommended by parents right now.

What Mumsnt users say about unique and beautiful girl names

“I love Zinnia - so chic.” - Mumsnet user, Nocturnaradish

How to choose a beautiful girl name

  • If you’re looking for a name which is considered classically beautiful, you might consider a longer and more traditional name like Elizabeth or Victoria, both of which offer a variety of lovely nicknames.

  • Choose a name which sounds melodic and beautiful when you say it, such as Alessia, Appoline, Elana, Eva, Fiadh or Lyra.

  • Choose a name which evokes images of a beautiful place such as Florence or Paris.

  • Honour the beauty of nature with a nature-inspired name, like Meadow or a flower name such as Daisy, Flora or Lavender.

  • Give your little gem a jewel name, such as Emerald, Jade or Ruby.

  • Look for a cutesy name like Elsie or Dot because it’s fair to say that there’s a big crossover between names considered both pretty and cute.

  • Get to know the origins and meanings of girl names and you may find one that really resonates with you.

  • Choose a name which literally means ‘beautiful’, such as Bella, Bonnie and Caoimhe  - or how about Alora, which means ‘my beautiful dream’

What’s the prettiest name for a girl?

One of the prettiest names for girls right now is an M name - Maeve. Of Irish origin, this pretty girl name has enjoyed a steep rise in popularity across England, Wales and Scotland as well as in Ireland where it has its roots. Meaning ‘she who rules,’ Maeve exudes a gentle power which would serve any little girl well.

What is a pretty rare girl name?

A pretty rare girl name is one that appears well out of the ONS top 100. Actually, the pretty name Tove is outside the top 3000 so it ticks the ‘rare’ box nicely. Literally meaning ‘beautiful,’ this melodic Scandinavian moniker would certainly make a wonderfully unique baby name.

What is a pretty English girl name?

A pretty English girl name is one with its roots in the English language. The pretty Old English name Hallie (or Halle) fits the bill nicely. It has a lovely nature-inspired meaning, ‘dweller at the hall meadow,’ which would suit any little girl who loves being outdoors amongst the beauty of nature.
