150 old-fashioned girls’ names: top vintage names for girls

Looking for a girl name with classic vibes? We’ve dusted off the history books to round up the best old-school baby names to consider for your baby girl.

By Louise Baty | Last updated Mar 12, 2025

Girl in summer hat

If you’re looking for baby name inspiration, why not delve into the past for some ideas? While modern baby names absolutely have their place, it can be lovely to conjure up eras gone by and choose an old-fashioned name instead. After all, there’s a reason why parents return to established, well-loved favourites time and time again.

Obviously, you need to do your research to know which names fit the bill of ‘vintage chic’ and which names are better left in the past. To give you some guidance, we’ve lined up 135 of the best vintage girl names.

How we chose the top old-fashioned girls’ names

When conducting our research we looked for old-fashioned baby names mentioned within our own baby names content, as well as checking which vintage names are popular with parents and parents-to-be in our Mumsnet Baby Names forum.

And of course, as we always do when compiling our baby name articles, we referred to the latest baby names list for 2022 (released May 2024) by ONS for names in England and Wales. We also analysed stats from the Central Statistics Office and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency for Irish names and the National Records of Scotland for Scottish names.

The official ONS list for England and Wales features a host of classic baby girl names evoking old-fashioned, whimsical charm from times gone by. We’ve included lots of these old-fashioned girls’ names in our lists. We’ve also sourced some beautiful old-fashioned names for girls that don’t appear in the ONS top 100 but have been mentioned in our other baby names articles including old-fashioned baby names, as well as being popular with Mumsnetters in our Baby Names forum.

Additionally, we’ve listed some rare vintage picks in our uncommon old-fashioned girls’ names section. All these names sit outside the top 2000 rankings for England and Wales, making them unique name choices for your little one.

What is a vintage girl name?

If you want a baby name that will not only evoke rose-tinted memories of the past but won’t date badly, you could consider a classic such as Charlotte and Elizabeth. Both these beautiful names have been around for centuries, stylishly standing the test of time but never hitting the top of the charts, meaning that they never truly go out of fashion.

But many names with old-fashioned appeal are what the ONS refers to as ‘comeback kids.’ These are names that were popular back in the day and then fell out of favour for decades. With enough time having passed for new parents to think of these ‘forgotten’ names as fresh and new rather than fusty, they’ve returned, screeching back up the name popularity charts.

Popular ‘comeback kid’ vintage names for girls include Victorian era names, Florence and Elsie. Another choice is Mabel, which was popular during Victorian times but fell out of favour from the early 20th century and was forgotten for almost a century. In 2001, only 20 babies in England and Wales were given the name Mabel. But during the noughties, as Victorian ‘granny chic’ names became popular, Mabel climbed steadily up the name charts. It hit a peak in 2022, according to the latest ONS stats, when it reached number 50 in the top 100 for England and Wales.

You don’t have to travel too far back in time to select a vintage name. After the rise of Victorian baby names in the early noughties, names from the 1920s, such as Daphne, Penelope and Joan (or Joanie), have come back in style. The way naming trends go, a new era is sure to hit the mainstream soon and we reckon mid-century names (1950s and 1960s) are due a reappearance. Mary and Gloria are cool vintage names from this time period.

Another type of old-fashioned girl name is the vintage nickname name. Back in the day, when times were more strait-laced and buttoned up, baby girls were given ‘Sunday best’ names such as Catherine, Margaret or Mary which were then shortened to cutesy nicknames for everyday use.

Some of these nickname names appear to bear no relation to the original name. For instance, did you know Polly started out as a nickname for Mary, while Peggy was an old school nickname for Margaret? Strange but true…

Nowadays, these traditional nicknames have become established and much-loved standalone names in their own right. These include Maisie and Peggy (short for Margaret); Mamie (short for either Margaret or Mary); Polly, Molly and Minnie (short for Mary); Kitty (short for Catherine or Katherine); Sadie and Sally (short for Sarah); Eliza, Betsy, Betty, Lizzie, Eliza and Elsie (short for Elizabeth). Even Lily could be used as a diminutive for Elizabeth as well as being a flower name in its own right.

If you’d prefer a rarer vintage name for your baby girl, consider Maud, which has similar Victorian vibes as the very popular Mabel but is much less well-used, outside the top 2000 in the official ONS rankings - or outside the top 3000 for the less-known spelling, Maude.

And how about a vintage name which ticks two old-fashioned boxes in one? Clara not only has Victorian vibes but also shimmers with Roaring Twenties glamour, in honour of 1920s silent movie star, Clara Bow. Clara is currently at number 93 in the ONS list but Taylor Swift’s brand new song Clara Bow is sure to see this name sky rocket in popularity.

Without further ado, let’s travel back in time to discover more gorgeous vintage names for baby girls in 2026.

How to choose an old-fashioned girl name

  • Bestow a sparkling old school gem name on your precious baby girl, such as Pearl or Ruby.

  • Crack open the old school pot pourri and pick a perennial classic flower name, such as Rose, Rosie or Violet. Lily is the most popular flower name at number 5 in the ONS chart.

  • Choose an old-fashioned nickname which is now a standalone name. We’ve mentioned some, such as Maisie and Minnie, in our introduction but others include: Bea and Beattie (Beatrice/Beatrix), Carrie (Caroline), Dot (Dorothy), Edie (Edith), Lottie (Charlotte), Penny (Penelope) and Millie (Millicent).

  • Go Roaring Twenties and embrace flapper girl chic with Daphne, Penelope or Joan.

  • Be an early adopter of the cool mid-century names trend with a 1950s and 1960s name, like Barbara, Mary or Rita.

  • Hark back to the glamour of Old Hollywood with a vintage movie star name. How about Marilyn in honour of everyone's favourite 1950s pin up, Marilyn Monroe? Or you might be drawn to Scarlett after Gone with the Wind’s Scarlett O’Hara, played by Vivien Leigh.

  • Jump on the cool ‘old money’ baby name trend and go for traditional aristo names with a classy vibe, including Caroline or Vivienne.

  • Take inspo from classic literary heroines. Charlotte, Anne and Emily Brontë would be excellent namesakes, as would Jane Austen. Brontë characters include Catherine/Cathy (Wuthering Heights) and Helen, Isabella and Eliza (Tenant of Wildfell Hall), while Austen’s books feature Elinor and Marianne (Sense and Sensibility), Elizabeth, Mary and Lydia (Pride and Prejudice) and Emma (Emma). Or how about famous Shakespearean characters, such as Juliet, Ophelia or Miranda? Charles Dickens wrote about Victorian life and his female characters include Flora (Little Dorrit), Dora and Rosa (David Copperfield) and Estella (Great Expectations).
