Thanks. I notice the Guardian website hasn't written about this.

gendercritter · 03/09/2018 09:22

Brilliant!! BACP deserve an utter roasting for putting their name to this bilge.

ChattyLion · 03/09/2018 09:29

Crikey- it’s really hard to tell when the TRAs are writing their views seriously for a respectable professional body, that it’s not a parody of what a deluded, sexist, patronising, snobbish woman-hater would write, isn’t it?

Floisme · 03/09/2018 09:36

Glad to see it getting picked up at last. Sorry for being lazy but can anyone remind me who Meg-John Barker (who it says wrote the guidelines) is?

chickendrizzlecake · 03/09/2018 09:37

I love that they have illustrated this with a picture of Nora Batty with her arms folded!! Says it all really. Thanks for sharing.

BiologyIsReal · 03/09/2018 09:37

The Daily Telegraph too.

Procrastinator1 · 03/09/2018 09:42

Floisme, the Edward Lord OBE, of the ponds and awful Corporation of London consultation and Mason. They might both be non binary, can't remember or understand how.

Procrastinator1 · 03/09/2018 09:42

missed out those crucial words, partner of.

Floisme · 03/09/2018 09:45

Thanks Procastinator so Meg-John Barker is Edward Lord’s partner? The web gets bigger every day.

Floisme · 03/09/2018 09:46

Ha! no worries I’d worked it out!
We need that Trello board thingy.

Melamin · 03/09/2018 09:46

Brilliant! As above, those guidelines read as a parody. I don't know how any professional can take them seriously, they are so off the planet.

hackmum · 03/09/2018 09:50

Interesting to see that Sophie Walker criticised the guidance. That's something.

I laughed at the BACP's comment: "We, of course, apologise if anyone is offended by the content in this guide. This is not something that we would ever intend to do.”

No, nobody was offended. All that happened was that your silly guide was subjected to ridicule and mockery. Idiots.

stillathing · 03/09/2018 09:51

has anybody reported on Meg John Barkers assertion in the BACP doc that sex is assigned at birth by looking at the length of the clitoris / penis?

arranfan · 03/09/2018 09:56

Did we decide on the vanity, appearance-focused status of those of us who were born/reared in t'North but then moved around and ended up in SE?

Sophie Walker and the coterie of privileged Mean Girls need to apologise for Heather/that entire debacle and to start acknowledging the need to address austerity and similar matters as they disproportionately affect women.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/09/2018 10:04

Offended? Amused, maybe. And now have the best possible comeback when anyone tells me to be more ladylike in the ways I object to misogyny (can't help it, mate, I'm trans Northern - don't you oppress my identity)

HotRocker · 03/09/2018 10:04

I clicked on the link to that guide last night because I was going to send it to someone. It’s been taken down and there is just a notice saying ‘sorry if anyone was offended by this, we’re going to take another look at it.’

Starkstaring · 03/09/2018 10:29

Sophie Walker is also right to point out the crass, ignorant stereotyping of autistic women as being unable to be caring or "feminine". How many autistic women did Meg John Barker listen to before jumping to those conclusions?

BACP - really need to get a grip.

OldCrone · 03/09/2018 10:57

HotRocker
Try this link. It still works for me.

FermatsTheorem · 03/09/2018 10:59

The Telegraph has picked up on it too: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/09/02/transgender-politics-world-say-thing-true/

Good to see them making the link between transgenderism and good old fashioned sex-stereotyping.

IAmSproutycus · 03/09/2018 11:15

Every time I re-read this I snort a little harder. I’m actually at risk of damaging the roof of my palate if this guff carries on.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 03/09/2018 12:00

I'm hoping guessing that Dr Barker and Mr Lord have not had children. Surely nobody who has cared for a baby could have written that appalling sentence about assigning sex at birth based on the length of the penis/clitoris. They don't even look alike!

I'm fascinated by why EL has turned out like this. Maybe I've lived a sheltered life, but I had assumed that a city type like him would be very socially conservative. He's a Freemason and as well as being involved in the politics of the Corporation of London he belongs to a couple of city livery companies. All very male-focussed.

However, I probably shouldn't be so surprised. I don't know if anyone else has read A Dance to the Music of Time by Anthony Powell. There's a character in that called Kenneth Widmerpool. Some points of resemblance, I'd say.

arranfan · 03/09/2018 12:01

Here's a thing tho'.

From time to time, I need to contact various bodies to as them about errors and various egregious analyses in their reports that they put forward to committees as comment on a topic or for funding.

You might not be startled at the number of times that I hear back from their Scientific Advisory Board that altho' their names are on it, not a single one of them read it - they just assumed it would be OK. Yet, it is their names being used to promote it.

I wonder who had oversight and signed-off on Meg John Barker's document?

carceralfeminist · 03/09/2018 12:02

The Telegraph comments! Nobody seems happy about this.

nauticant · 03/09/2018 12:22

Edward Lord as Kenneth Widmerpool! Oh, I like that, I like that very much.

NameChangedAgain18 · 03/09/2018 12:42

I hope that there are MPs reading the comments below the Telegraph article.
