Had microsuction of ear wax today.

I had been using olive oil, but there was a hard lump of wax blocking the ear canal, which was stopping the oil from being able to get further in to soften the rest of the wax.

I took a photo of what came out, which I can post if anyone is interested.

Could you tell me how long it takes per ear, please? Do they do both ears the same day? Is it v expensive?
Did you have tinnitus, and if you did, is it now gone???
Am thinking about doing this...

TheSecondOfHerName Fri 23-Feb-18 14:24:24

It took about 10 mins per ear.

She did both ears in the same appointment.

I don't have tinnitus.

It cost £35 per ear. My GP was happy to refer me for NHS microsuction but that was a 2 month wait and an hour away.

TheSecondOfHerName Fri 23-Feb-18 14:26:01

It was quite loud.

There was a brief time in each ear where it was uncomfortable to the point of being painful, but that bit lasted for less than 30 seconds.

TheSecondOfHerName Fri 23-Feb-18 14:27:04

The larger piece is about 1cm long.

Thank you! If only other MN queries were answered so quickly and succinctly grin

RussellTheLoveMuscle Fri 23-Feb-18 22:19:22

Ooh it is my dream to have my ears suctioned.

Where did you get them done OP?

QueenLaBeefah Fri 23-Feb-18 22:28:09

Very tempted by this procedure.
Thanks for the photo.

TheSecondOfHerName Fri 23-Feb-18 22:29:46

I had it done at Specsavers; not every branch offers this service so check with them. I'm happy with the service I received and would recommend them.

GertrudeCB Fri 23-Feb-18 22:30:48

Ooh < rubs thighs> where did you get it done , op?

Just out of interest have you had your ears syringed?
What’s the difference except ones water and the other suction?
Is suctioning better?
Only ask as I have regular ear blockages and always use nurse at my GP’s surgery - free and appointment ms within a couple of days.

There's a Youtube channel run by Audiology Associates UK which features the most satisfying videos of microsuction.

Galaxyfarfaraway Fri 23-Feb-18 22:37:38

Has your hearing improved?

DioneTheDiabolist Fri 23-Feb-18 22:38:24

Thanks OP. thanks

TheSecondOfHerName Fri 23-Feb-18 22:39:26

Lulu my GP advised against irrigation as I've recently recovered from an ear infection.

Galaxy yes, hearing is improved and the crackles & pops have gone.
