Norethisterone - what happens with the next period?

My periods are very long and heavy. We're fortunate enough to be going to the French Alps for Christmas and me period is due at the start of the week.

An abdominal ultrasound has shown that I don't have any fibroids and because I'm 37 my GP isn't keen for me to have endometrial ablation. I'm going to try a mirena coil, but becaus i'm a bit worried that I won't get on with it I'm waiting to have it fitted after we're back.

I've been prescribed Norethisterone to postpone my period when we're away, it what happens to the next one? Will it come a month after my postponed one (so I'll push my whole cycle back a week), or will I have it when it would be due if I'd not taken the Norethisterone?

I should have asked my GP this, but it's only just occurred to me!

I took it earlier this year because my period was due on my wedding day (!) and obviously I didn't want that! I stopped taking them the day after the wedding, and my period arrived about 5 days later.

My period starts a few days after stopping the tablets, while taking the tablets I am a moody hormonal cow, worse than normal pmt.

Thanks, I'm ok about that period - the one that I'm postponing. It's what's going to happen time wise to the next one that I'm not sure about.

Oh I see! My next AF started 31 days after the post-Noresthisterone period. So the pill sort of resets your period, and you'll get the next one a month after the delayed one, not at the time it would have been if you hadn't had the pills IYSWIM?

Perfect! Thanks.

If my cycle was going to remain the same then my next period would clash with a v. important trip away with work which would be a complete pita.

Delaying my Christmas period will solve two problems at once - hooray!

sorry to offer another point of view but I thought the bleeding happened a few days after taking the last tablet- it delays it rather than re-sets it.
Best ask your dr or the pharmacist.

I took them whilst going on holiday. When I got the next period I had terrible mood swings , the worst cramps ever and a very heavy period that lasted much longer than normal.

Never again (the low feelings were too much ).

Yeah, we said that bit, the OP was worried about the period after the one that will directly follow the pills.

Yes, thanks Ivy.

It's not the immediate one that I'm delaying that I'm wondering about. It's the one after that and I haven't been able to find anything written about that anywhere which is why I though asking for first hand experience would be useful Smile

oh I see. well I think your body should just go back to normal. The pills stop the lining being shed but it shouldn't affect pattern of ovulation.

So you think the next one would be when it would be if I'd not delayed this one?

Conflicting theories!

No- not what I said. You should start counting from Day 1 ( when the first period starts) as the 1st day of the next cycle. When I said go back to normal I meant the next cycle would begin once the period ( delayed one) had started. So I think we are saying the same thing :)

Hi there
I know a lot of time has passed since you posted this but I wonder if you remember what did happen with your next period? All these years later I find myself asking the same question and finding nothing concrete on the internet to tell me! This thread is the only thing that comes close. My guess is that because I will be delaying day 1 (first day of bleeding) that will delay my next ovulation and therefore the next period but I can’t find that said simply it even at all anywhere! I am in fact taking it this month with the aim of delaying my period by two weeks and therefore making it come two weeks later in August too as the new cycle will be later. It’s my August holiday I am trying to delay but would rather rest that now rather than have the possible side effects (which will be the symptoms I would feel being due in and feeling all that for my entire holiday)
I hope this makes sense....basically.....was your next period delayed too and did that follow on for the future? Many thanks if you can remember after all these years! X

Came on here to ask exactly the same question! Does anyone have any experience of the next Periode, the one following the first bleed after stopping Norethisterone?

How funny, only thread I can find on this too. Technically I should have started my period after the delayed one today...it’s not arrived and have noticed my cycle has felt different this month. Hoping it’ll come soon I guess. I don’t plan on being a mum of 3! Shock

@Luckymumof2girls Oh dear! Fingers crossed!! Would you mind keeping me up to date about when your period arrives? And then how long until your next cycle? I don’t need to delay mine for a couple of months, so I’m trying to decide if I should delay my next one so I can deal with any potential side effects then. But if my next one will just come at the “old” time obviously that wouldn’t do any good!

Hi ladies just wanted to share my experience, took norestitherone 6 weeks ago only for 3 days to stop on going bleeding, had a with draws bleed 3 days later for 5/6 days. My natural period according to my app is due next week in 5 days but last night had lower back and stomach pain went to work today and ended up in a ambulance, I started bleeding like a normal period but the pain was unbearable more like a miscarriage, I took ibuprofen paracetomal and gas and air and only now my pain has become tolerable after 4 hours of agony. I thought I was pregnant because I was having nausea sore breast strong sense of smell, but if this is my period reset again then I am grateful also.

Arrived today so just 1 day longer cycle, starting from start of 1st delayed period. So started 3 days after last pill and then 26 days (I have 25day cycle normally) after that period #2 after pills. Hope that helps!

Lucky thank you that’s great, really helpful. I hope you don’t mind me asking, how many days did you delay/take the tablet for? And how did you find the side effects?

Report
Luckymumof2girls · 20/05/2019 21:44

I took the max number and it delayed for 17/18 days. I was a bit bloated but other than that I was fine. I missed a couple of pills so eeked out an extra day. Immediate period after was lighter than normal. This 2nd one is as normal.

I hope to conceive now that my periods have come back, although I have stopped bleeding I have uncomfortable back pain, has anyone else experience this?

Report
Mymindblown · 01/06/2019 11:23

I had also came across this thread wanting to know the same thing! I am also thinking of delaying the period before my holiday in case I get side effects while taking it, in the hopes that the following one after the delayed one will start after my holiday has finished! However Rnb1988 experience above sounds very scary if that was the following period after the delayed one?

Any other information would be helpful. I would be worried about taking the tablets whilst abroad in case I don't get on with it.

Hi folks I came here with the same q in my mind and now that I have got my periods, I thought I would share my experience. My periods were due on May 13th but I wanted to postpone as I was travelling and didn't want it on the flight. I started taking primolut n (5 mg) once a day on May 10th. I took the last tablet on 13th and 14th evening my periods started. Note: my periods are usually bang on target. The may period flow felt very normal intact slightly less painful.
This month that is June my periods were due to have started on June 10th, but have only started today on June 16th coming 6 days late. I usually have a 28 day cycle. Probably this is an effect of the 4 days of primolut n that I took last time. I don't know. So far on the first days the flow has been slightly more than normal will update on the 2nd and 3rd day.
